My main site last year dropped from a PR 5 to a PR 3 while traffic tripled. Works fine for me.

Google doesn't use PR any more, they have stated that the current concept in their spybar is for entertainment only.

It stopped being relevant when they invented the spybar - why would they create a tool like that to help you manipulate search results - that's the opposite of their aims. It's still popularised to encourage people to install the spybar - Google likes to know your surfing habits, and it also sends reports about sites which are offline.
