you know, for years I had been telling mysql that there was a bug.... I've filed numerous bug reports with data cases, and they always tell me that there's too much data.

Well, there's not a lot of activity on this database, and hey, now I have a tiny bit of data to send them.

For some reason I thought it was related to fulltext indexes, that now appears to not be the case.
