What's your take on psychics?
This morning on one of the big city radio stations here they had this guy Gary Spivey on, and the listeners were just flooding the lines wanting to talk to him. Some of the things he was telling these people was totally insane and I just don't see how he could know it. Like really exact details about these people's lives or the nature of a loved one's death. He would just bring up the details out of nowhere. So I had to find out who this guy is, check out his site, heheh:
http://www.garyspivey.com/ |rainfro| I always figured it was staged somehow, but now I don't know. What's your take on psychics? Ever had a reading done?

From his site:
"The following is a list if some of Gary's recent and more well known predictions. All facts are verifiable and documented either in print or on radio tape. Train Wreck in Madrid, Spain On Gary's 2004 list of predictions, (sent to all forms of media) Gary predicted that there will be a train wreck in March. On March 11, 2004, a series of co-ordinated bomb attacks on Madrid's commuter train system killed at least 186 people and wounded over 1000. Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson Scandel In early January of 2004, Gary predicted on Lara Scott's weekly music countdown show called "The World Chart Show" that Justin Timberlake would get into a scandel involving sexual content. Lara asked Gary if it was a sex tape, but Gary said, "It's not quite like that but there's some sort of a little scandel..." On February 1st, at this years Super Bowl XXXVIII, Justin Timberlake pulled off the front of Janet Jacksons shirt exposing her right breast for everyone to see, resulting in what he later called, "a wardrobe malfunction". Renee Zellweger Wins an Oscar Gary predicted on Portland Oregon's AM Northwest that Renee Zellweger would take home Oscar gold for her performance in Cold Mountain. On Sunday, February 29, 2004, Renee won the Oscar for Best Actress in a supporting role for her performance as Ruby Thewes in the movie Cold Mountain. Rush Limbaugh Scandel Early in 2003 Gary appeared on the ManCow radio show and predicted that Rush Limbaugh would go through an embarrassing scandal. Later in the year Rush Limbaugh left his show to attend a 30 day stay at a rehabilitation center to battle his addiction to pain pills which was uncovered when a former housekeeper of Limbaugh's told the media she used to get pills for him. Laci Peterson's Body Found On March 5th, while helping Dennis Rocha (the father of Laci Peterson) in a channeling session to try to find the bodies of Laci and her baby, Gary had a vision that "both bodies will be found around the edge…in a bay…near a park where they park boat trailers…with a city across the water". On April 14th, the bodies of Laci Peterson and her baby were found around the edge of the San Francisco Bay. The bodies had washed ashore near the town marina park in Richmond, a town directly across the bay from San Francisco. Sept 11th Terrorist Attacks In November of 1999 Gary started having visions of New York being engulfed in black smoke from a downward-like explosion, caused by terrorists, leaving thousands of people dead. Gary said it would happen in the third quarter of 2001.He stated this on numerous radio shows most notably "The Morning Zoo"in Las Vegas. September 11, 2001 Terrorists flew two commercial airliners into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, bringing both buildings to the ground, and killing thousands of people. Bill Clinton Scandal In December of 1997 Gary predicted in the New York Post that Bill Clinton would be caught red handed with his fate left in the hands of an assistant. On January 17th of 1998, the world learned all the intimate details of the relationship between Clinton and his White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Everything from the tie she gave him to her semen-stained blue dress ended up in the infamous Starr report." |merlin

I had a broken watch once that was right twice a day.
Generally, I feel that psychic predictions are so vague as to be twisted by inference. In Pensacola, after Ivan, there was a picture of a psychic's 1 room 'office' that was completely demolished by Ivan. How could they not have known? In Maryland, I saw a psychic that went out of business -- well, if you were psychic, wouldn't you have known that you would go out of business -- couldn't you have taken steps to succeed? I'm forever a cynic on psychics. Most of them are parlor tricks. As for the predictions above, the WTC was attacked once before by terrorists, the WTC had extra anti-terrorist insurance. Anyone could have predicted it would be a target someday. Train wreck -- rather major election coming up that separatists wanted to disrupt. Train's make headlines. Justin Timberlake -- the media looks for things like this, whether it was the superbowl or something else, it would have happened. Oscar performance -- a relatively good gamble. Limbaugh scandal -- he's about a year late on the articles that were in the local papers to make a 'prediction' Laci Peterson -- the police suspected that Scott dumped the bodies near where he went boating. Oohh... mystic prediction. Clinton Scandal -- even in the Arkansas offices, Clinton always fraternized with assistants. Nothing really surprising in any prediction.

Yeah, I hear you guys.
The call-ins are what got me wondering though, he didn't fish around, he just stated details that only the caller would've known. Plus, you have to admit, his afro rules... I bet that's where he gets his power from.

As for radio shows, if you have ever called into a radio show -- even a contest, they pretty much run you through the paces beforehand.
I called into a trivia show at a radio station, I had a question I was SURE they wouldn't know the answer to. So, when the lady asked me what the question was, I gave her a different question and evidently that one was good enough to get me on the radio. When I got on with the DJs I asked my original question -- which was different than the one the lady had asked me. There was stunned silence on the radio for a second, followed by some 'ooh.. hmm..', they said that they gave up, I gave the answer. They said, good one, you stumped us, you win whatever it was, stay on the line to talk to Christie to get your prize. Well, after I got on the phone with her, I was told I wouldn't be getting my prize because I broke the rules, why did I change the question, etc. I have no doubt that a psychic doesn't use the same techniques to screen callers and ask leading questions or who they want to communicate with, etc.

I'm not a big believer in that stuff. I always felt there was some kind of gimmik to it. I don't believe in much if I can't touch or see it for my own eyes. It's like UFO's. People say they see lights in the sky. That they are watching us. Well my military experence tells me that when you want to watch someone the last thing you do is place a bunch of big flashing lights at your location. I do think that some people MIGHT be luckly enough to have released a fraction more of a % of their brain power and possibly able to see things that others can't but so much of it has to be based on a taking their word for it. Plus they never seem to win the lottery. If I had a gift like that, I would be spending 90% of my time rubbing lotto machines trying to get the numbers.

I think 99% of them are bogus, but there's that 1% that aren't.
My cousins daughter was in a car accident. She crossed a road and got hit by a car doing ~100 km/h and landed FAR into a field. She broke pretty much every bone on the side where the car hit and was in coma for I don't know how many weeks, but pretty many. Her stepmom (who is psychic) knew instantly that something had happened and started to freak out. Pretty soon after they found out she was at the hospital, they rushed there. During the whole time at the hospital the stepmom talked to her while she was in coma. It was not bogus either, she knew stuff about the accident that only my cousins daughter would know. So yes, I believe that some has the ability but most are just cons. |

All smoke and mirrors. Ever hear of a guy in the UK called Derren Brown? To watch him you'd think he had 'the gift' but he goes on to say that all psychics are a sham, and lays into them for building up people's hopes, and preying on the weak.
This is the guy who rang a phone box that was being filmed, answered by various passers-by, spoke to them and made them collapse - all through the telephone. Completely random people. How'd he do that? He's an extremely gifted - not 'has the gift' psychologist I guess you could call him, he knows exactly how to make certain people do whatever he tells them. It's fucking freaky lol. He explained a little of why the phone-box trick worked - people who would answer a random phone while about their daily business suggests they are more open to mental persuasion. I'll see if I can find a couple links, and if you ever get a chance to see his shows - they will blow you away! And I agree with Sparky on those predictions - too broad, too heavily weighted already in favour of what he 'predicted'. |

Here is what I always have thought.
Harry Houdini spent the last of his life searching for a real physic after his mother died. He never found one. I think he knew more about physics than any of us ever will so, I will just take his word for it...no such thing. |

I honestly think some, but very few, are true. I think some people are gifted with this ability, but most that say they are, are not. I could make 500 predictions a day, and if 1 or 2 come true, and I only mention those 1 or 2, does that make me psychic? Naw...
