Raging Toothache! Agony!

After approximately four hours of absolute agony my toothache has finally eased off a little, so I'm posting about it on GG&J because I want, no, I NEED lots of sympathy.

I'm going to waffle on for a while. Please feel free to skip the rest of this post and reply with your sympathetic posts underneath.

The pain came from nowhere during my submits earlier on, and gave me searing pain unlike any pain I've ever felt in my life. Eye-watering pain, temporary-blindness pain, pain to such a monstrous degree that I left Mrs Gary a note on the desktop of my PC telling her exactly what had happened, and what meds I'd taken just in case she found me passed out on the couch or something.

Trouble is, like so many Brits, I've suffered through a very bad dentist, in fact I've had two nightmare dentists.
There isn't a man alive that scares me, but put me in a small room with a guy in a white coat and strange sharp metallic "picking" instruments in his hands and I'm a total pussy.
The first bad dentist removed a wisdom tooth when I was nineteen and totally butchered me, leaving me with a pretty bad phobia.
The second, ten years later, only had to check out a small issue in a back tooth and ended up completely fucking up my life, leaving me a jibbering dentist-avoiding wreck from then on.

The second dentist has since been dismissed and is no longer destroying people's mouths. If I met him today, knowing the pain he'd caused me, and that his "work" has caused me right up until now, I'd remove his fucking eyes with a spoon and feed them to stray cats.
I'm not joking.

Okay, I'm tired now and it looks like I have some time to sleep before the pain starts again. Lets hope it doesn't wake me up. You know your toothache is going to be a bugger when it wakes you up in absolute agony and doesn't give you a chance to consider what to take to combat the pain - you're screwed as soon as you open your eyes.

I've finished fishing for sympathy now.
Thanks for listening. I'll be back here in a few hours looking out for those kind & caring replies.
Hospital tomorrow. Gotta get this fixed.

Get that benzocaine shit, you can find it at most drugstores and the big general stores, it comes as a liquid or as gels and pastes. Works in seconds, and really helps. They make a paste that lasts for hours, lets you sleep.

What you are looking for is benzocaine - thats the main ingredient, it might have different brand names

Or hold a plastic bag of ice right against the hurting nerve - but that only works while the cold is actually numbing the nerve. Take the ice away, and in a few minutes it hurts again.

Thanks Bill - sounds like advice from someone who's been there!

Mrs Gary is on the case as I type, looking for pastes & gels containing benzocaine - I Googled a load of brand names so I'm very optimistic.
Thanks again, much appreciated!

Good luck!!!

We always have pint of super strong tequila in the medicine cabinet.
(any 80 proof spirit will work)
take a sip and rotate your head so the tequila is over the nerve that's hurting. Don't swallow it, let it sit there for 20 or so seconds.
After 20 or so seconds, swallow it if you want, or just spit it out. The alcohol will numb the nerve.
Then the benzocaine, and/or ice to follow.

Works great for teething babies too. Just put a drop on your finger and rub it over the area.

These tips from my Grandmother who never drank a drop for 96 years, and the closest dentist was over half a day by horse.

I've always found shooting some heroin will kill most pain.

Thanks Fonz, although I'm not sure if that's the sort of sympathy I need....although maybe.....

ladydesigner, thanks. I'm going to tell Mrs Gary that her childbirth pain was NOTHING compared to what I've been going through. I wonder if she'll believe me?

Dare, thanks mate, but I haven't got ANY alcohol in my house at the moment. Luckily the local dentists here are a lot closer than a day by horse. Insane.

Cleo - you're one crazy babe! I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure I won't find any heroin lying around. Hey, a partner account at Cleo's would sure help numb the pain though.
Are you still considering paid partner accounts?
Want a test subject?

Lorsha - you're right, I should go to a dentist ASAP, but they're awful in this area! I'm not in pain at the moment but if it returns I'm heading straight to the hospital and skipping the dentist. No hesitation.

Thanks for the advice & sympathy folks.

Oh man...having just had a tooth extracted a few weeks ago, I know what you're going through

Lucky for me...my dentist is very good...actually a cute little asian woman...and the oral surgeon (also a woman) she referred me too was equally as good.

That said...talk to anyone you know in the area to find the best dentist available (that's how I found mine). As soon as you find one...the magic words are..."Gimme DRUGS!"

There's little worse than a pounding toothache

I didn't look there! Stupid me.......okay just checked and found some old cookie crumbs, a piece of lego, and one whole English pound! Woo hoo! Thanks Cleo!
Thanks also for the PM. I've replied and I'm getting excited!

MrYum - Please don't say "pounding"...please, please. Not that word! Other words not to use are piercing, sharp, throbbing, stabbing, intense, needle, deep, and root. Jeez. It hurts just typing them.

Tooth aches come from an infection in the root/gum. the only way to cure it is get rid of the infection. Topical remedies only work short term and you have to keep applying. If you arent allergic to any of the "cins" or "cillans" --and since you have a brood of kids you probably have some of this around.. amoxicillan will work wonders. Takes a day to cycle thru the system.

note disclaimer: do not take meds if you are allergic or have a reaction.

After a particularly trumatic experience with an emergency dentist, I had some serious adult-baby issues to work out. After several especially embarassing appointments, I requested the gas. For an extra $30, it relaxed me completely. The best part is that the relaxing experience seems to have reset my mind, and I'm now much more comfortable at the dentist without it.

btw- you probably don't want to watch Marathon Man
right about now |shocking|

I've noticed a trend in dentistry where emphasis on pain free treatment and relaxation is finally getting some attention, at least around here. If it's been a while since you've been to one maybe things have changed.
