Windows or Linux
Our host tells me that our email server needs upgrading and is offering Windows (at a cost) or Linux (free). He's kinda pushing Windows, says it has anti-spam and anti-virus, but the box is already running Wnidows OS and I think he just doesn't want to change it over.
Any opinions?

Heh Heh Heh! Lisa! Vampires are make believe, just like elves and gremlins and eskimos!

I would go with Unix / Linux. Plenty of free anti-virus, spam filtering solutions out there. Depending on how busy your mail server is. Unix would perform much better. Just the Windows OS alone weighs things down a great deal.

Another vote for Linux here. Because you'll have a greater choice of scripts, a more secure environment and I swear Windows runs slower.
Every Windows server I've worked on has been slow, with a lot of downtime.

Thanks guys.

Windoze boxes do have an advantage for certain applications, but mail server isn't one of them.

if you want windows, ask for a discount. Or you'll just take linux. Free for you, more work for them..

Despite the general opinion is to choose Linux, I can say that I am running a dedicated for 2 years and i didn't have any problems with it. Beside that, it is easier to configure and to maintain for somebody with limited knowledge.

I apologise for crashing the thread with this, a polite message to flymaster a few posts up and a warning to everyone else . There is a gallery listed at the site in ur sig, hosted on the domain best3xvids.com ( or something similar ) dishing out some 'nice' zlob trojans, that was the first and only gallery I checked. So could possibly be more.
thought u may want to know with regard to the thread, its a no brainer really, and expecially if there is no charge for the linux, thats your way to go. Last edited by cragrat; 2006-11-30 at 08:53 PM.. |

So is Windows, but on Linux you generally have faster bug fixes and great package management systems, like apt (Debian) or portage (Gentoo).
We're using exim + spamassassin, but you might want to take a look at Scalix if you have a large number of users and need good Outlook integration. Cheers, Alex

Once again, thanks for all the great info. We're going to go with the Linux setup.
