Good Saturday Morning! (Dec-18)

I knew getting my own server would have a few bumps along the way. I thought I would be blasting out blog entries by now but, as it turns out, I was missing a few programs. I had to recompile PHP with GD, TTF and another module. I am happy to say that yesterday I actually completed a blog entry so now I am on my way.

Friends are having a tree trimming party tonight but other than that my day is pretty much free and clear. Hope yours is great.

Only 7 more sleeps until Santa!

Good morning,

Just got back from a funeral. Those things are always a bitch to go to.
This evening I'll be having dinner in the VIP lounge of a soccer team that plays in our premier league (Lierse) after that there's the game but I'm specially looking forward to the food

And now I'm trying to sell my gf's car because WE are buying a new one.

Have a good one all!

Good morning world

Art - you should write up a quick tutorial on installing a WP MU setup from scratch. One day you'll be glad you'll have it to refer back to. Plus I know there's at least a few people around here who'd want a peek at it.

Fonz - It seemed like just the other day you were most famous for Cheetos and iPod smuggling. Now you have pics of a baby before it's born and you're WE-ing a new car. Man, the kids grow up so fast these days.

Just a working day here, with maybe an early knock off. I'm expecting Boondock Saints via Netflix today so that's my big plan for the evening. Yeah I mean the 1999 original. Never saw it somehow and figured I'd watch it before the 2009 sequel I haven't seen either. See, big plans.

Wishing a great weekend to all.

Took my newly repaired leg out for a night of dancing and walking all over town and had a fucking fantastic time. PamelaDoll came out with us. She is like having an animated cartoon character, think Jessica Rabbit, in the group.

We had planned on going kayaking today but now it is pouring rain so I guess we are going to be looking for indoor stuff to do.

I just bought that on sale on BluRay, I heard it's a GREAT movie so looking forward to watching it as well. I heard the second one isn't as good good but rarely they are.

Just work planned for me until noon when I have to pick up my daughter. Probably more work this afternoon before I too watch a movie tonight. Maybe Boondock Saints, maybe Inception.

When I reach 25 blogs, I will do it!

The Wordpress Multi-site (AKA MU) was easy to setup and well documented. What you end up with are blogs that are housed in sub-domains or sub-directories and accessible through a Super Admin panel. The pain in ass part was the Domain Mapping plugin which directs your top level domain names seamlessly to the sub-directories/domains. The plug-in instructions are missing one small part which the screen prompts don't tell you! Fuckity-fuck, it took me a day and a half to find that out.

I also tried a plug-in which was supposed to clone a site from one sub-domain to another but I had mixed results with it. It meant some restoring of backups which stole some time from me. Unless I can sort that out it will mean a bit more manual work with each new blog. Oh, well.

For those who are wondering about the advantages of the WP Multi-Site functionality, you get all your plugins and the source code in one location so you update and patch your bevy of blogs just once. This is very important because WP is known for frequent security updates. Imagine if you had 100 separate WP blogs. That would mean 100 logins and updates! Also, installing a Plug-in means, in most cases, you can use it on any blog in your network. The main downside I can see is that they all reside on one IP which gives you less SEO prospects. Having said that, there is nothing from stopping you from running multiple WP Multi-site installations from different IPs.

Yeah, I remembered you mentioning that a few days ago. So in the interest of not spending the same day and a half figuring out which small part is missing, I'd love to know more about that since seamlessly mapping top-level domains is what I'd want to do too.

The version of WordPress 3.0 Domain Mapping that I used required you to do a couple of things like create a directory and so forth. It wouldn't let you use the Plug-in until the tasks were done. Once you get through the setup menu you think you're good to go but you not. The written instructions were clear, I had to copy the file "domain_mapping.php" into "wp-content/mu-plugins/". Once I did that everything fell into place.

There are a lot of blog posts on this plug-in because of A Records and CNAME records that you have to create. Thinking that was the problem I read just about everything I could in order to solve it. I use cPanel and that part was a breeze. I just parked the domains and cPanel did the rest (A Records or whatever). For me, the A Record issue was one big red herring but seemed to be a major issue for a lot of people.

Hope this helps.

Good Saturday Peoples

The Bitch is having a Christmas Crafts Sale & Expo here at the house today, so I'm all flustered. So far only 2 people have visited the house, but I have made 4 sales online via Facebook

After that, it's a night of watching hockey for me.

Thanks, it definitely will. I hadn't caught the part about the written instruction being clear in your earlier posts. I thought the 'last piece of the puzzle' was something that just wasn't in the info anywhere at all and you'd had to hunt it down elsewhere.

But I can see what you mean about how the setup menu should tell you to do that final step. And I've more than once searched for an answer online and wound up getting red herringed by following threads that just weren't my problem.

Thanks again!
