Question Where Were You 9/11/2001 ?

I was watching West Wing late at night in my little flat attached to the office I then

had.. they interrupted for a newsflash and when they crossed to New York the 2nd plane hit

live while they were showing the live footage as background.

I sat in awe for 5 minutes and then rang everyone I knew because I knew the world as we

then knew it had changed forever.

Still sends a chill up my spine.

May the memory of the tragedy long serve as a reminder to us all.

My wife and I lived in a loft downtown Chicago, 3 blocks away from the Sears Tower.

I was getting ready for work. My office was on the top floor of the bank, directly across the street from the John Hancock Building.

My wife had the Today show on and the 1st plane had already hit. As I was watching, the second plane hit. Then the Pentagon.

I called the owner of the company and he already knew and told me not to come in. The police were already closing the streets around our office.

I was contemplating going on our roof and setting a camera up to film the Sears tower, just in case. But decided to pack up the family and get to the suburbs instead.

Hard to believe it was 4 years ago already. How things have changed since then.

Same chair I am in now, same TV channel, doing the same thing, just a different board.

I still think they should build two identical towers just a bit taller.

I wonder when the next attack will be? I live next to a major port. I think about being vaporized due to a nuke being shipped into the port. Then again many more people are killed each year in car wrecks.

I was at home at the house we had in Key West back then, watching morning CNN in the background as I got the day started at my home office.

I hate to admit it, but I think I must have had a 'reading to schoolchildren' moment when it happened. I do remember the breaking news, the second plane hitting while I watched it happen, but when my wife (just waking up) came into the room she said I was just sitting there staring at the screen, not saying a word, even when she was asking me what I was watching, thinking, she says, it was a little early in the day for a "blow stuff up" action movie.

Then she realized it was real.
It was the news I had on, as usual. It was CNN she was seeing.

She says she still couldn't get me to respond. I was staring at the screen, listening too it seemed to her, but non-responsive. At that point she shook my shoulder hard enough that I came back to the room.

I don't remember any of that. All I remember is the stuff I saw on the screen, and what I heard them saying.

I'm thinking my brain didn't believe what it was seeing and hearing.

Taking a shower, we was on our way to see the 11am showing of "American Pie 2" and Toni came in and told me that a plane had just hit the tower, I gave a chuckle thinking it was a small Cessna for some reason, and what a dumbass the pilot had to be, when I saw the tv I knew it wasn’t a Cessna and then the second plane hit....

I was at work early that day when I got online to read the board and saw Cleo post about a plane hitting. Called my wife to get her to turn on CNN and when she did the second plane hit.

I went home for most of the day and was in shock.

That was a strange day, watching the Today show they said, we have a breaking news story..."after these comercials". And when we first saw it, it just looked like one of the towers was on fire.

Even here, 3 hours away...The fire trucks were racing down the Thruway towards NYC.

I saw the second plane slam into the building as I was walking from my hotel in downtown New York. I was an automotive engineer at the time. I had slept in and was supposed to be in a meeting.

My employer actually thought I was dead, as did my family. When I phoned home, my mom fainted when she heard my voice. My dad said, "for the first time in your life, your sleeping in actually was a good thing." I called work and they were getting ready to call my parents to give them the bad news. It was kind of spooky. When I came back home, I insisted on not being a liaison rep anymore. Two weeks later, I was out of that industry completely.

I was at work, at the time I worked for the Cdn Federal govt - so I was in our main govt building here and we were all gathered around the tv in a meeting room. Scary as hell, I honestly thought that it was "the big one" coming...we kept waiting for more & were scared to even go near the windows. Everytime we heard a plane we were sure we were next.
We had airplanes diverted to our airport here & kept thinking -what if one had a terrorist on it.
Very very scary.

I remember looking up at the sky that day and seeing no contrails at all, probably for the first time ever. It was the creepiest thing not to see airplanes in the sky & know why.

My husband was on his way to work & turned around to come back. He wanted to pick up the kids at school and take them home. We really thought that this was the beginning of the end.

The scariest and saddest day I've ever been through. I still get chills thinking about it, and can't believe it's been 4 yrs now. Some things stay with you forever.

It was first period class and the prof had CNN on the big screen. Actually watched the second plane hit the tower live. Seemed so surreal.

I was in the Network Command center for IKON office systems in Norcross GA, doing a database project for them. The 1st plane had hit and everyone rushed to the 40 TV screens that normally monitored the different IKON regional offices.. as we were standing there the 2nd plane hit. I grabbed my cell, called my husband who was working for GE Power systems and told him to go to CNN.com (he had no access to TV). After a stunned silence he simply said, i'm leaving to pick up Spud at school and i'll meet you at home.

2.5 weeks later the U.S. Navy sent 3 shore patrol officers to our apartment to take my husband back into active duty.

I was on the phone with a co-worker, while Torn was in the shower. We had just gotten up and hadn't even turned on the TV yet. My co-worker had the radio on at work and said it sounds like the Pentagon has been attacked. So I turned on CNN, told Torn and her and as soon as I was able to get some understanding of what was happening. I got off the phone in shock as my co-worker tried to contact her family that she had in DC & NYC.

We spent the rest of the day glued to the TV & Peter Jennings.

I was at our old house in southern MN watching CNN. (we were in the process into moving into a big house North of St. Paul)
I was still selling cars at that time, and needed to get to work at 2pm. It was a weird drive with No planes while taking the 45 min commute.
Since then, got out of car sales, lost our 2nd house do to lack of sales. Got divorced and moved up to Northern Minnesota with two of the kids to be close to the cabin.

I just hope this war on terror doesn't = war on drugs.

I had gotten off a plane in Las Vegas about 4 hours before the first plane hit. I was staying with an ex business partner, who was nice enough to come wake me up and say "you are probably going to want to see this".

That was the longest week I have ever spent in Vegas.

I turned on the TV and saw that the first tower had just been hit. My wife was in an airplane on the tarmac just waiting to lift off. She had a business meeting in Montreal but it was of course cancelled when all flights were grounded. ---art

I was living 5 minutes from LAX in California. My wife woke me up early to see as she was pretty shook up. I remember opening my eyes, her telling me, and thinking for some strage reason "They finally did it."

Right here, as usual. It's all pretty much a blur except for one thing. The sight of the towers coming down is forever etched in my mind. Even live, it seemed like it was happening in slow motion.

I was watching TV at the time. At each commercial break they said "Turn to Sky News Channel for news on the attack on America" and a few seconds of footage of the towers being hit. As the channel I was watching was owned by the same people who owned the Sky News Channel I assumed it was a joke, an attempt to get you to watch their news channel, so ignored it. Later I switched on my computer and found I was getting 404's on all the American sites. I cannot remember if I phoned my ISP and got a recorded message from them, or if I checked my email and found a message from them there, but whichever it was I got a message from my ISP telling me that they were sorry that I may be experiencing problems getting American sites but their main connection with the US was via a company whose equipment was near the Twin Towers, so was down, and with the extra traffic from people surfing for information on the terrorist attack their only other US connection could not cope with the load. That was when I knew it was true, but even then I checked all three news channels to be sure it was not a hoax, I simply could not believe it was possible.

At the time I was working on a local community project in my spare time, and we were hoping for some funding from the local council, so I was keeping my head down on the adult side in case someone at the council found out and used that as a reason for not funding us. So I was keeping well away from the boards. But as soon as my ISP made it possible for me to get online to US sites I had to write posts of sympathy on all the boards I knew at that time.
