Virgin to link/traffic trading

I have a fake site that is on the brink of going legal, as I really want it to have more than fhg's and my own stuff. It's got a little bit of traffic to it...it's a PR3, even though I don't think that means dickall.

I think the traffic could be more if I did two things.

1). Opened up and solicited submissions

2.) Established some link trades to get traffic swooshing around.

But even though I have read and read, the traffic stuff still confuses me. I know that right now, I am not interested in the skim stuff. Not for this site. This is going to be my site that I keep clean as I can.

I know there are people who just trade hard links. That is more what I'm about. But can you do that without some type of script? If you can't, what type of script is both suitable and hopefully with a free version? (I can see it on Christmas morning "Sorry, boys, I bought a script for my porn site instead of gifts, I knew you'd understand) And what sort of things do you have to watch for to make sure you aren't getting cheated?

And I don't know what to do first, traffic or get some submissions coming in. To me that seems like a chicken/egg kind of thing. Traffic will increase if there are quality submits. But in order to intice submitters, it would be nice to have some traffic to offer them.

I'll add to that that at this stage in the game, I am not open to getting submits by widely advertising it or by adding my site to some auto submitter. I only have a free version of a script running on the site, and I am not sophisticated enough business wise to catch cheaters and stuff on my own. So I hope to find niche submitters from this board, and maybe another or so. Known names that I can hopefully trust.

Any advice you knowledgeable people can give me is very much appreciated.

From my experience I have found Ideally you want to try and do both gradually at the same time; get a little bit of traffic and a few submissions.
Once you have a few submits it will give surfers a reason to take a proper look around and stop them getting bored with them constantly hitting sponsor galleries / sites etc...

The simplest way to deal with hard link trades is to chat to a few webmasters you know or that you know are trustworthy.
Post a link in the link trades forum here on GG&J i'm sure you'll get some interest.

If you only have a few links it's simple to check the trades quickly by hand, otherwise if you are running a link list with any script such as Gossamer links, linkadmin, radlinks etc, you could get it to check the recips for you.
Otherwise there are specific programs that will crawl the urls on a page to check for a recip.

If you wanted to track all the in and out hits there are many free scripts that will help you do that, try these

When you say about wanting enticing submitters, but you need traffic for that; remember a nice 'empty' link site can often entice submitters.

Think about it... 'Mr Webmaster' submits his site to your amateur category, say you have only 3 links on that page, the likelyhood of his link being clicked on is dramatically increased compared to you having 50 links on that page and his being added to that.

Less links = Less competition for the same traffic.

Regardless of the fact that you have very little traffic now, it is obvious that you will work to increase that, therefor the submitter doesn't lose out in the long run.

Make some friends and do some good trades (But only with people you trust), build your PR and you'll get some good traffic from the SE's.

If you starting or have a tgp and need a script thats free and does give ya some control here is a good one http://www.jmbsoft.com/software/ag/ As far as tradding traffic that can be a tough game, if you make free sites you can start by feeding it off of them as well as build some se ranking that way too

Static trades are you best option to start with for traffic

And stop in On the bench there are lots of folks there who would give you lots more insite

I second MML's suggestion. I used the free version of Auto Gallery to start one of my TGPs a couple of years ago. Hell, it's still there somewhere in the background. You don't get all of the features of the paid version, obviously, but you'd be surprised how good it is for a free script.

As far as traffic trading scripts, I just yanked them from my TGPs. Someone who's big in the trading game can easily sell you on the benefits of juggling tens of thousands of hits a day between other TGPs, but when you sit back and look at the lack of bookmarkers and sales, you'll come to the conclusion that building traffic the old fashioned way is best. You have to be patient, and you do need to feed it by putting your link on galleries and free sites, but in the end you'll have a site that produces.

Static trades, that is what I want to start I think, yes. I know I need some trades, I just cannot afford time wise to have to invest a huge amount of time monitoring and babysitting them. Maybe in the future, but not now. And I would absolutely love to attend On The Bench, but I either work on Saturdays, or have my children home.

Useless Warrior...Yep, that is what I've got...the free AutoGallery script on my site. It'll do me for awhile, because I really am not going to court a bunch of public submits. I'd rather have smaller amounts of links and less frequent updates than have to put up with the bullshit. Not to mention I don't have the knowledge on how to catch someone who is trying to fuck me. Metaphorically, that is.

And I have been doing as you suggested with the recip link on my galleries and such. So a little bit of traffic is already in place, along with some bookmarkers.

You guys...~considers a closer peep at Wild Unicorn to be sure~ rock. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.
