Angry Oh WTF Chrome?! (aka THIS IS NOT WHAT I'M USED TO!)

I updated Chrome today & something looked different, but I couldn't put my finger on it until about an hour ago...when text is linked, we're all very used to seeing a line underneath it going right thru from start to finish. Like this:

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Here's a screencap of how Chrome now displays it:

Obviously, if you're viewing this in Chrome, both look the same. So I slapped together this test page so I could see if any other browsers made this change:
FireFox - Nope
IE - Nope
Safari - Nope

The strangest thing I've discovered so far is when you do shit like this:

(jjjjjjjjjj)

HOW THE FUCK WOULD ANYONE KNOW THAT'S LINKED?!

I poked around & found out that "This feature is called 'ink skipping' which is enabled by default." The best part? There's currently no way to disable it

The biggest change is that as of Google Chrome ver. 68 will label unencrypted websites as NOT SECURE. So if you don't have a ssl certificate and can't use https your site is labeled unsecure.

edit: cheapest ssl certificate goes for around 25$ annualy. edit2 ( if only you have 1 or two sites it's not that bad ) Problem #1 could be to change existing internal links if hardcoded plus you need one more .htacces rule to rewrite http to https. ( but that just one time problem )

Problem #2 Also for some time Google was saying that non https will have lower ranking.

Problem #3 And now Google results instead showing that ex. this site is secure will label only unsecured url's. ex. this site is unsecure.

I've been meaning to ask Mojo what's involved with the https thing. I guess that's now on my To Do list for today as well as this mess (another post coming)

There's a solution for your websites if you want to turn it off, but seeing as I suck at CSS & can't get it to work, I started a new thread so that I could ask for help

Well, if it's $25 a cert then the $4000 plus it would cost me will have to wait until I see a serious nut kicking by G before I evaluate my options.

Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of hardcoded links on internal pages. This is mostly due to a lost admin that controlled a network.

One other HUGE factor... Google sees https://site.com as a different site from http://site.com, so you're going to see at least a short term drop in Google rank.

The other issue, if you trade traffic with other sites that track incoming via referring URL, they'll need to update their tracking script to look for the https instead of the http. Some scripts can't do that.

I found out the above when I switched to https about a year ago. I had to switch back to http after about a month due to the huge drop in trade traffic. I had fallen out of the list on far far too many of the sites I've traded with for 10+ years.

One other option/idea is to move smaller sites with proper 3xx redirects into a one ssl website's >> subdomains. The trick is , if your site rely only on submission clicks and some trades and NOT seo traffic then why not. But if it's heavy seo traffic then it's not worth it. Just buy cert. Also I'm not sure if all certs take subdomains into equasion. It's also worth checking how many certs. you can have on your hosting. Most of shared hostings allow only one ssl domain per account.

edit. one of those threads for Sparky

Mojo told me:
Quote:
... if you just need basic trust, we can configure Let's Encrypt on your server to make use of their free certificates, if desired. Those will auto renew approximately every three months.

First pc, thanks for the link. That was an interesting read and quite frankly it looks like G is being a greedy bastard! Especially denying one company their certificates.

Second pc, unfortunately the traffic is SE mostly and it's not to the root domain but all the hits going to all those internal pages that add up. Thankfully on a dedicated server.

Third Greenie, thanks for checking with Mojo.

Still not sure what will really be necessary and from what Toby and pc mentioned it sounds like way too much work to move everything to https. This will be evaluated if and when traffic gets that serious nut kicking.

Have a feeling I'll just let it die a slow death while getting a second server and move an avs site to turn into a proper paysite and/or start fresh with a handful of new sites all certified from the beginning.

2 years or so ago I went to move a money site to https. Did everything by the book. Traffic took a severe dive. I lost pretty much all my SE positions.

I tried to wait it out but a month later it was not back so I switched back to http and about a day later had my traffic coming back.

I see no reason why a site that does NOT collect data through forms need to have a security certificate. It does not make sense to me at all and when things do not make senses I do not go along.

I will wait it out and see what happens myself.
