Is Social Media a Fad?
I found the stats on this video to be extremely interesting ... Time for us porn peddlers to really think about how (and where) we advertise in the future.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjhZKtoRsUA I feel like I am really lagging behind on whats new out there - I am trying to catch up to the world but for some reason I'm stuck in my old school ways of pushing porn - I wish I could understand all these new things and outlets for advertising but I'm not there yet. In that video there was a lot of sites I never heard of, like Hulu and Bebo - why am I stuck so much in the past? anyone else out there feel like an outsider from today's internet surfers? |

A bit, tho I think the same could be said for a lot of people.
Even the social media people can't claim to understand it - and most of the biggest names, youtube and twitter spring to mind, are still bleeding capital and looking for a way to turn a profit. But yes, we're operating in a bit of an internet backwater now. |

I agree with Ramster. They arent going anywhere.
Just as anything it kind of becomes "second nature" to log into MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, etc. but that doesnt mean that its not a great means of getting product out to the masses. I use the social networks in very subtle way at the moment. But Im looking to increase the exposure of my products mainstream and adult in ways that dont offend too many nor do they appear to be straight up spamming. This would be a great subject to open a discussion on for sure.

Yes, they're here to stay. But...
...using them successfully as a marketing tool to either make sales, drive traffic, or increase brand awareness depends alot on what you're promoting. It requires that people willingly follow what you're posting. A solo model or any entity with a fan type following can use them very effectively. Those of us that are promoting sponsor sites have a much more difficult task using social networking to our advantage without blatantly spamming. |

Chances are youve used very powerful tools like many weak individuals do in this business and that is to use them the lazy way. Everyone wants to spam the latest and greatest trend and then call it a failure when it doesnt work for them. These are exceedingly powerful tools. I will give you 2 personal examples and then go work on a blog post Im up early to compose on this subject. 1. When my ex partner essentially killed Oprano with paid posters and "good morning" posts and other worthless nonsense I was lucky enough early on to see the power of these tools for what they were. Im very fortunate to maintain my ties back into the technical side of this business and was lucky enough to have a personal conversation with Kevin Rose in the earlier days of Digg. Using Digg almost solo I was about to bring that board back from the dead and get new influencial eyeballs on that site. While these eyeballs might not post they still contact me frequently with information and sometimes consulting work. 2. In Jan. AEBN premiered Real Touch as a first look to consumers to get real world feedback on a tangible product. I was able to use a myriad of these tools to explode the media on queue when we landed in Vegas. I felt it was pretty successful when we were stopped by the press to schedule a "first look" while supervising the big banner being hung outside the hall - the day before AEE started. Social Media is here to stay and if you want a piece of this lucrative promotion like toyota, starbucks,Dell and other blue chip companies that "get it" then I sugest that you learn what these tools are and how to best use them or find someone that already understands. Remember it was said that both the PC and the internet was just a fad... Last edited by GonZo; 2009-10-13 at 06:06 AM.. |

To my view the social media craze is just getting started, albeit myspace, twitter, facebook, etc., which surely will morph into another form over time.
The misconception webmaters have is thinking it is a marketing tool or means of sponsor promotions, well actually it can serve that purpose and can be very fruitful in that regard as well, however you should embrace it first for what it is, a social media tool. Nothing beats getting the word out, high visibility, and the fact that people (industry and otherwise) are locked in daily to their selected form of social media, it's a great way to stay in the mix, so to speak. There is some kid who has a twitter account and his posts consists only of comments that his elderly father makes, he has a half a million followers. He on the other hand follows one person, Levar Burton, go figure.. |

The video is excellent indeed. It illustrates the point... if you dont have someone that understands how to use these tools then youd better get someone soon.
THe cam networks for instace that are bragging about how many followers they have should be tracking sales and not followers. Everyone that tries to follow me - I block because I see the spam they are trying to send. 2 striking message. It has passed porn in consumption and that is a tremendous mechanism for COMPLAINTS. Any of you that are usng it to spam. PLEASE KEEP IT UP! Word of mouth travels like widlfire. |

social media is about people contacting people with things they are comfortable sharing... somehow, i don't think porn and social media make very good playmates
