Domain and hosting recommendations

Thinking of starting some kind of adult site, maybe a porn blog or something. I have a couple of questions!

Does the domain name matter? I'm guessing I need to go for a .com but do I need to focus on keywords in the domain, or is it all about the site content and backlinks?

Also, any recommendations for cheapish (but good) adult allowed hosting?

MojoHost has been good and reasonable for hosting though I believe there is cheaper.

I don't believe domain name matters though I tend to purchase with keyword in it especially if niche oriented.

I use Vacares.com for hosting - theyre groovy.

As for domain: .com is still king ...

You wont find type-in domains (sex.com) these days unless you pay a bomb for it, so you can choose to do a keyword rich domain (pantyhose-and-lingerie-nudes.com) or you can check expired domains and pick a relevant one that still has some backlinks or you can simply grab one you like....

Its 98% content and backlinks so the effect of a domain you can get at registration fee these days is minimal....

A lot matters on what you plan on doing, how much effort you want to put into it, and how much money you are willing to spend. Some cheap hosting is just that, and you pay for it with downtime and poor service. Domain names can be gold. As Hincapie said, .com is the best. Content? How are your writing skills? How well do you network with other webmasters? You can have the greatest domain name with fantastic content, but unless people can find you, your traffic stays low. Are you willing to work your ass off for at least 6 months or even longer?

I'll have a look at Mojo and Vacares today.

To answer the other questions, I'm not exactly sure!

My writing skills are reasonably! I don't have any of my own picture / video content but I'm thinking about buying some (dunno if this is a good idea or not).

I've emailed loads of affiliate programs and webmasters over the last few weeks, they either ignore me, scam me (yep, I've lost money before I even get started!) or have no interest in talking to someone new!

I'm stuck at home for the foreseeable future due to recent family problems. I have the time and motivation but I'm finding it hard to get started

Thanks everyone!

In the early days, we all used to buy content. One problem was sometimes the content was way different than what you would see on the paysite. You are advertising the paysite, right? Why not use samples from the site? Sponsors give you promo material just for that purpose. If I am going to promote XYZ porn site, why would I use anything but their content? (I am promoting Joe's Steakhouse and Brewery. Here, have a free hotdog and soda so you can see what you will get if you go to Joe's.)

Many affiliate programs no longer have a dedicated rep, or right now, they are working remotely. Even established affiliates don't always get answers right away. Sponsors (affiliate programs) don't ask for money up front, and many will work with newcomers, but you have to know what you are asking for. You can't go up to these guys and say, I want to do something in adult, but I don't know what I want to do. They don't have the time to deal with that.

In some ways, this is like trying to decide to buy transportation. Do you buy a bicycle, motorcycle or a car? Gas, electric, or diesel? You need to decide what you want to do. The most successful sites are ones where the webmaster has followed their own passions. The fact that you are so undecided may also be a reason you are not motivated.

Thanks Pagan.

I've registered 3 keyword(ish) .com domains today and made an offer on a premium / more brandable domain. I'm also waiting for some managed VPS hosting to be set up. It was not super cheap so hopefully it'll be good enough to start.

Do free site lists and tgp sites still get people submitting? Most sites I look at seem to be linking directly to the sponsor or other sites within the same network, which I'm guessing are owned by the same webmaster. (don't answer if you're gonna be giving away any trade secrets )

It all depends on what you are planning on doing. You seem to have your domain names and hosting, which is great. Next would be to figure out what you are going to put on the domains.

Free sites (meaning an index page, menu page, and 1 to 3 gallery pages) are pretty much dead. I don't think I have seen one in at least 5 years, nor have I built any. Most that still build do galleries (10 to 16 pictures, some with 1 short video clip) and submit to either their own link lists/TGPs or to a network of others or both. It is impossible to build enough to keep the TGPs going totally on submits these days, so we do use sponsor-provided FHGs to help out. It is time consuming, and there are very few that still build. Sponsors have also cut back on what they offer in the way of FHGs because well, there are few that use them.

No trade secrets - just Basic Marketing 101A. Figure out what unique product you are marketing, how you will showcase it, and what your target group is. Once you know those answers, the rest will fall into place. Then you can move to BM101B - finding a sponsor(s) and creating your content. Actually marketing your product is in 101C. It isn't overnight, and it doesn't come without a lot of thankless work. Most just quit while they are ahead.

Very good advice Pagan.

From a program perspective - I stopped doing FHGs or any other "bulk" materials years ago...it simply didnt get used and never made sales - so it just didnt justify the time. So I give affiliates with an idea what they actually want, if it sounds like a workable plan they have, but per default there is nothing (some of the bigger still do some but I doubt its easy to make sales with)

Aside from Tubes - if youre a good writer blogs with unique content and review sites still bring in some good traffic and sales ... several other things probably work too, but its also a matter of finding non-saturated activities

Thanks for all the advice!

I'm currently trying out a few wordpress themes while trying to understand how WP actually works! I'll post some URLs so you guys can have a laugh once I get things set up.

I can recommend Hawkhost. Solid management and reasonable prices.

I am selling a good domain name with a solid backlink profile if you want to get a jump start with a known and trusted domain:
