Setting Up Wireless - help
I am setting up wireless for my house and am having a hell of a time wth a new laptop I have. My current laptop connects no problem at all but I cannot get this new laptop to connect.
When I go to Network Connections it shows a wireless and it shows my wireless card, Atheros AG5005G so I know it is there. The device manager shows it is working properly. I am sure it is something simple but I cannot figure it out. Urg!!! I think it is an issue with the new laptop never ever connecting to wireless before and it cannot find it. Under wireless properties I click Configure for the netword card used then click Advanced. On the old laptop under Property there is a "Channel" and it is set to 06 (which is correct) but on the new laptop there is no "channel" option at all. Anyone got any advice? |

Sounds like something I ran into when I got my wireless. On my laptop I had a on/off button for the wireless. I could set everything up, but since I hadn't turned on the antennna (or what ever the on/off button is for) it couldn't find anything. Could be that.... or something else

Yes the switch off. Going thru the "Connectivity Doctor" and he is telling me hey, the switch is set to off. LOL Working on it now. WTF is the point of having a laptop if the switch is off?

Well that was an hour+ I won't get back. There is a tiny button on the laptop that turns the wireless function on. My other one has it too but it was on when I got it so it's news to me.
All working now. |

You would think that Windows would tell you that you had it off but Windows being the POS that it is gives mostly meaningless error messages.
Don't feel too bad the same thing happened to me when I was setting up Talia's PC laptop. I would have mentioned it but I had forgotten all about it. |

If your laptop also has bluetooth capability, wifi (802.11) and bluetooth conflict with each other. So, they have a switch that allows you to turn off the wifi antenna when you want to use bluetooth.
Your laptop only needs to have that as an available option for them to put the switch there -- that way, 1 production run, and they can decide whether to put in the bluetooth daughtercard in.

Went through all the wiring and settings on tv, vcr, everything.. only to find that she'd never pressed the play button. I shit you not!

Yup several reasons for the on/off switch as CD34 stated.
My Dell Axiom PDA actually has 3 wireless modes..bluetooth, wi fi and CMDA...and all 3 conflict with each other One of the biggest reasons for the on/off switch is the wireless uses power, and thus drains your system a little when you are on batteries...why keep the power drain on if you are never using it? |

I can turn things on and off on my Mac laptop but it is all done in software. It can be done either in the network settings, the location settings, or in the menu bar. I've never understood sticking hardware buttons all over the place.

People that were in Buffalo when I was there knew we had problems with my mother in law getting our TV to work. I came home and found out that the cable box was off. Right now, I have an HDDVR from Time Warner, a DishNetwork HDDVR, a DVD that hooks to our network and a DVD that records hooked up to the Sony and Receiver. Not a lot of people can really figure it out Just the way I like it.

I had a customer fly me out on an emergency to Toronto so that I could tke a floppy disk out of a server that wouldn't reboot properly. We were only charing them $1,200 a day plus expenses so it wasn't that bad.
