Google's searches are becoming second rate

I just have to let off steam, because Google is pissing me off.

I'm talking as a surfer here, not as a webmaster. I'm trying to do some research for an article I'm writing and the results I'm getting from Google are just crap.

Never mind all the spam, the actual searches themselves are inaccurate. They're not returning what I want.

One of the big factors in this is that Google have decided to automatically include similar words in the search.

Example: I'm searching for the term "remove". Google is also including "removed", "removal" and "removes". I didn't ask it to include synonyms, it assumes I want it. Trouble is, this means my search is no longer as targetted and I'm getting a heap of results that aren't on topic.

I went to Yahoo and got what I wanted straight away.

Is it too soon to start predicting the demise of google? Because the way I feel right now, I'll be glad to see it go.

Relevant search is what established and built G to begin with. But that hasn't been true for several (7?) years grandmascrotum.

To reinforce babymaker's post,

" Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, sold over 100 million dollars of stock on February 22 this year. IN ONE DAY. "

Becoming? They've been fucking terrible for some time now... You can't sell lots of PPC if the good sites can make it into the top 10...

As for this supposed dupe filter - I'm always amazed at how many Wikipedia feed sites end up in the top 20 for the same term...

Google is an outright fuckin mess these days. Was looking at some results yesterday...about 80 of the top 100 listings all redirected to the same site

I have a feeling Google cares less about the quality of their adult term SERPS. Right now, I'm loving MSN results which are damn clean compared to Google. If all the surfers switched to MSN today, I'd be making way more money.

First off - I think the problem youre seeing must have something to do with geo-targetting as when I type in remove I get all results for the remove without any other terms on the first 10 results.

More importantly - that is an awfully generic term to try to search on - and both Google and MSN would flounder with that generic a term - although I dont know your application in your research I would have to say that searching would need to be a little more targetted from your end to get a search engine to return what you really want - that would be akin to typing in "web" and expecting to get a specific set of results that were tailored to your preconceptions - not gonna happen unless its a screwed up search engine like Yahoo that stores info on your previous searches (cookied) and makes a guess on what you want.

Linkster, here is what I was searching for:
penis doctors remove

I was writing about guys who stick stupid things in or on their penises, so I wanted to find stories about doctors removing stuff from dicks.

Ideally, I wanted it in the context of a headline: "Doctors remove wedding ring from man's penis"

Yes, I know you're laughing now

Anyway, thanks to the synonyms thing, I kept getting stuff about circumcision, medical journals, all sorts of stuff.

I don't know if Google geo-targets synonym searches but I don't know why they would.

And yes, everyone is right. Google has sucked for quite some time... but I think it's reached the frustration stage where people are gonna look elsewhere.

Well - using your search terms without quotes the first 4 results I get in Google are about Romanian doctors have removed a man's wedding ring from his penis, Ananova: Doctors remove padlock from man's penis, Doctors remove wedding ring from man's penis, and IOL: Doctors remove wedding ring from man's penis so it looks like the result are right up your alley

I tend to think maybe that with the rollout that Google is doing right now of a completely different infrastructure and some recent reports of many sites being afflicted due to a reindexing of everything, Google does give some unusual results for some things - although the traffic is still fantastic and has actually gone up for me - but I would be intotal ecstacy if MSN took over the search market right now - I would triple my traffic overnight

Linkster, you and me both when it comes to MSN. The MSN search is amazingly good, the results are bang on relevant (a little too relvant, but there you go), and their bot is agressive about visiting all corners of the site.

The new google infrastructure I guess is nice, but in reality the SERPs are still spam infested wastelands of poor results. Any generic or simple term is a waste, and it isn't getting better.

Worse news for Google is that the media is staying pretty heavy on the click fraud story, and making them look bad. When they put together that google has given priority to sites with adwords on the pages, well...

It doesn't smell quite as nice at googleplex right now.

Alex - one good sign is that the complaints from the people that dump huge amounts of pages(usually autogenerated) into Google are bitching up a storm over on the SEO WS's - seems that theyve all gone supplemental overnight and are looking at being removed by this new infrastructure (which was really Googles intention) - should hear a bunch of whining within the next few days

MSN Not Finding All My Pages

I've had the opposite happen...the MSN spider found my index page of my LL and one other category page, but hasn't found the other 42 category pages in over 3 months...

Any suggestions on how to get the spider to list all your pages?

Thanks!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Showing 1-3 out of 116,000

with filter=0, 30 pages showing out of 33,400.

http://64.233.179.104/search?num=100...om&btnG=Search

Probably a wacked DC, but the results are showing all supplemental except home page.

What a mess.

They are supplemental listing almost everything except index pages on many sites on that DC... once again, applies my theory of google: they write filters to get rid of "spam A" and in the process kill off "good site B". They are as subtle as a hand grenade in a bowl of porridge at times.
