You didn't miss anything, there's no way to auto-crop an imported image. What you can do however, is set up the gallery scanner to crop the imported images after you've completed the import.

So if I get this correctly, when I import a preview-url, I can get the scanner to crop that image. (in other words, scanner will not try to import from gallery-url (and often get a 302)?
