Radical Supp Index Facelift

Googleguy announced earlier today about a radical supplemental index facelift:

I'm not seeing any changes so far on "google.com", but results on 72.14.207.99 look promising, to say the least.

What does Google do with this supplemental index? Is it an indication of things to come? Like this

Google pulls results from there for long tail queries when it doesn't find enough results in the main index.
