Bad year for HD's
We just got our 5th(!) request in 2 months to resend all content to a client because their harddrive crashed and they lost everything...
That added to the people I have seen in here that had HD-problems, it seems that this year is not a good year for harddrives. More reason to make copies of your most important stuff! Perhaps it's interesting for those people to not have a good solution yet for their back-ups to let them in how you make your backups?

We have had our share of HD failures too Martin. I have sent out 2 newsletters telling people to backup. Some people don't think it can ever happen to them.

I lost two internal drives and one FireWire drive last year.
I do computing consulting and see on average one drive failure per month, sometimes a lot more. Maxtor and IBM drives seem to be the worse. Nightly backups and making a backup clone of my boot drive has always gotten me back up and running in about a hour. Martin Your customers really should learn to use a CD or DVD burner, I know that I do. |

Jim, Cleo,
I do agree and I am sure each one of them does that now.. Personally I like those remote harddrives you get for not that much money these days; I just ordered another 250Gb external drive. We get so much new stuff each month, that back-upping/storing on discs like that really works like a charm..

Back up marks-links.com nightly. Back up all domains to tar files on Saturday AM - download the tar files to my computer starting on Saturday afternoon. If I don't feel comfortable, burn a C/D of the tar files on Tuesday or Wednesday. about 90% of this is crontabbed in. (moving to another domain is minutes instead of hours - like moving markslinks.com to marks-links.com - took about 1 hour including script changes and 1 host support ticket) Jays-xxx-links Pretty much the same thing, only back-ups start Sunday night when I get back from the cabin, and gets weekly C/D burns. If I go down, it would be simply hours to get back online no matter what caused the failure. Server crash, or my hard drive crashing (though I have 3)
