Time to reboot

If you are running Fedora 10 on an unmanaged server, there is a new kernel out. Yum it down, hold your breath and shutdown -r now.

And I had 40 days of uptime. Dammit.

Don't you hate it when an upgrade or sometime makes you reboot.

My last reboot was the last system upgrade from Apple.
% uptime
0:04 up 16 days, 11:30, 3 users, load averages: 1.32 1.20 1.02

LOL. Its a lot worse when the server is 1000 miles away. My host has virtual consoles that will let you control the server from the initial POST, but I can't afford it. On the other hand, you can't really have a server sitting live on the net with an outdated kernel just waiting to be hacked.

The first time I rebooted I had forgotten to set up the virtual NICs to come up after rebooting, and the only thing on the real cards IP address was the SSHD. It took me 20 minutes to figure out why I could SSH in but nothing else was answering even though all the services were up and the firewall was still set up right.

The first few days I wished I had a managed server, but I pay an insanely low price and I have complete control over the box. Now if pretty much runs itself. I just check in once or twice a day to check for rootkits and to see if any updates are available.

I have enough headaches. Adding server maintenance and issues to the list would drive me insane. I go fully managed.

Good luck with your update.

Wow. That's one hell of a load average you have there as well! I'd probably reboot it but with the host and a tech (unmanaged?) on standby.

My personal belief is that people get overly worried about kernel updates. Unless they are critical updates, I rarely update my kernels. Once a server has been online 3-4 years, I ask the DC to give me a new box with new kernels and OS.

Once I have a box running well, I tend to leave it alone except for system and software updates.

It hosted in our own rack. the load being more or less its normal as its a mysql master doing random reads/writes to a 12GB database while two (sex) slaves eats humps of its juice too.
