Is submitting to blog directories worth it?
Sorry if I'm being too forward, as I know some of my favorite members here are also blog directories owners, but it's just something that is on my mind today.
I am unleashing several new blogs to the world. Not splogs, original posts, originals blogs and all that. What I wonder is, will submitting them to blog directories give me any added benefit? It's a lot of work, when some directories probably won't even bother listing it and others will just not send any worthwhile traffic. I just checked my stats for a blog that I submitted to ~40 directories over a year ago. I only see two of them in the referrers logs and the number of visitors is very small. Any decent link exchange gets me more. So, I am wondering, why bother submitting to directories? Do you still do that?

I would say yes. Is it worth submitting to link lists? Blog directories are to blogs what link lists are to freesites. (In the most simple way of looking at things. Not taking into account that most link lists these days have blogs.)

I would say yes (ok I admit I have a vested interest) My Aggregator averages 1500 Unique visitors a day and it's mostly from search engines so if nothing else you know the search engines will crawl your blogs

It is worth submitting to those established ones, that actually list your submissions and send you decent traffic for a longer period... also good dirs that sort submissions according to incoming hits...
I have a list of 10-15 and only submit to them and see traffic for a longer period of time. |

Some are good. The traffic flow is small but constant. I am satisfied with what I get from T-Pat.

Wheither you think you can or you think you can't, Your right.

I never had much luck with them, I must have submitted to the wrong ones. When I first started blogging I use to get descent traffic from directories, not the last couple.

Oh no, I'm sweating like Roger Ebert
|
I submit to a few...mostly because I know them from here and because I know they can help getting crawled sooner.
Otherwise, and I count my own in this, I think they are a waste of time. Aggregators, on the other hand, could be a good thing. |

Yes it's worth to submit to blog dirs and etc. Every traffic is traffic and if you can find some really nice and big blog dirs then it's ok for you!

Internet! Is that thing still around?
|
I'd go with cucumber on this one... i also used to submit to bunch of directories ( some were good some less good ) but after few weeks the traffic is almost nonexistent, and after few months only few of them occasionally send few hits and that's it. nowdays I only submit to 10-15 tops ( selected few..older ones mostly )....but as paul said...any traffic is good traffic and it will help you at least to get indexed faster....so it's up to you

Backlinks are never bad (unless they come from link farms).....the traffic that comes from directories is not bad (not much) but somewhat productive....

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless
|
Yes, it is worth it. Especially if you are submitting under a category that relates to your sites content.

I get a decent amount of traffic from the following directories:

This is definitely worth using if you plan to submit to blog directories. |

Yeah I'm pretty sure. Number one because it's endorsed by Twan and with all he does for the blogging community I doubt he would endorse it unless it was a good tool. Second, because regardless of the amount of traffic you get from it, it's great for back linking. Every directory on it is PR5 and you only have to provide recips for 8 of them. So you get 9 PR5 directories linking to you with no recip links. I'm new to all this, so I very well could be wrong but this sounds like a good deal to me.

Twan endorses it because it's his. Along with all the directories it submits to.. Why wouldn't he endorse it?
I use to get traffic from those directories, but seems they filled up with so many of the mass produced stuff. |

I haven't been listed with them for very long, but I've been getting a steady amount of traffic. It's not "holy shit god damn" type of traffic", but I'd say it's definitely worth the 3 minutes it takes to fill out the submitter and the backlinks are just gravy.

It hasn't been long enough to actually say its good or bad but when you submit to all, you get a decent traffic rush - smart linking, not so much but you get the indirect links. Guess we'll see when google trusts my site. |

Are directories worth it? As a directory owner I have to say it's definitely worth it for beginner bloggers. If you have an established traffic network of your own you may be better off saving your outbound links for something more constructive.
My two cents. |
