Working with images

I've been having a devil of a time resizing images for the web using paintshop pro 8 and think I need some help..

I've been getting my content at 1024*768 and about 150k in size. I have been cropping it, resizing it, and then using the jpeg optimizer to get the images to 500 on the long side and under 40K in size - but I don't like the way they turn out. It's all I can do to keep them from being fuzzy.

Anyone have any tips on getting pix web ready using paintshop pro 8, or maybe another program?

liontamer,

aim for anything up to 80K less is better but if the image goes crappy it aint worth it..

when saving as jpeg, click the options button and move the "slider" to a compression factor of about 20..

and see how it comes out... then go back adjust and save again and..... etc.

It takes a bit of practice

Something else to consider, I know that you have to work with the tools you got, but if you can afford it a program like Macromedia Fireworks makes the job a whole lot easier and faster.

Good luck man.

To just resize em and still keep decent quality I use Easy Thumbnails.
To crop em and to optimise them I use Photoshop, it has this handy feature 'save for web' which decreases them in size and still maintains good quality.

Hiya liontamer, from one newbie to another.

I've recently started using BatchThumbs, which was a free download and seems to be working well. It's simple and fast and friendly. Using it has actually turned working images into the easiest and fastest part of building a site for me.

If your interested I can see if I can find where I got it from?

Take care.

Porn Princess,

I believe we declined one of your sites for poor quality images and thumbs yesterday... so that program, even if free, may not be that good.

NO "program" can do the job for you.. you need to understand what you are doing and use these tools with what you know.

I sent you a PM with the info. I wasn't sure about the policy on referring to places on the board so I played it safe.

I didn't realize it had been declined. But, I know not all LL send notice of decline out. I'm definitely still learning in every aspect in the beginners stage. Thanks for letting me know so that I can review the images again to see how I can improve in the future. I'll be sure to look closer instead of only trying for ideal measurements/file size.

In Photoshop you can make dropplets. Once made all you have to do is drag and drop your images on them and while you are doing something else they are making your images ready for your galleries. I have one for the thumbs and one for the full size imges. While Photoshop is busy processing my images I'm busy making up my ads.
