Question Automated Recip generator

For months I have been building a huge DB of recips, both text, button and formatting to all rules, even updating those that dont follow the rules of others...blind linking recips are the usual creatures in this scenario. Anyways I have them broken down per LL and per niche, even created fill in's for niches that do not exist on certain LL's. With this massive DB I developed a program that lets you select your LL's and niche, then it generates all tables or XHTML divs (based on selection) and displays the code and links to preview. I intent to add a simple SSI feature that allows you to include tables based on query string and amount of cols and rows.

with all that mess said.. does this sound like a marketable product? or pay per use/month/year item? or is it really not worth the hassle?

Do you have a sample or a site to show ?
I'm sure your project works good but there is also other one made by easymama Quick Recip and it's free. The difference is that here LL owners updates their recips by themselfs.

Currently I have only the one implementation of the program and its under a secure login. as soon as I get a public version finished, I will be sure to post. As for Quick Recip, never heard of it! I will be sure to look into it. thanks for the input pclit!

I'd prefer to be able to use your database directly on my own server, that's something I'd be willing to pay a nominal fee for as well

Any chance you could do something like that? I.e. have some REST or XMLRPC interface where I can query your DB and get all new/changed recips since last time I checked?

Sure it sounds like a marketable product but the main problem with that kind of sites is to keep up with recip changes. I see no other way than manual check at least every few days... and with huge database it might be pain in the ass.

I remember when I first read about QuickRecip and took a quick look their recips were already outdated...

Also, how would you work it for people who have partner accounts that you don't have?

Keeping the database updated is a huge pain in the ass.

Thanks for all the input and ideas. so basically I would come down to too many recips to update to make this possible. If I added some sort of submission form to request a recip change or would users take part in this? would it help if the recip generator was endorsed by say GG&J? I am interested in hearing greeies input on this. I would feel much more confident in opening this up to the public knowing I would be helping users of GG&J and getting valid submissions for updates. IF and its a big if.. I do decide to put this up. It would obviously be free for GG&J users because you are all excellent people. Anyone have any other pros/cons to add to this?

My solution to this would be the change/request form. Like I said before, my question is would people be willing to participate?

If anyone would be so kind, could you please send me a list of your LL's so i can add them to my recip DB. I have the usual suspects but would like to make sure I have everyone covered. Thanks for your help!

Using divs as opposed to tables sounds interesting...do any of the existing services do this? If I could get neat looking text recips, I would certainly be interested.

I am not aware of any services the use divs for recip layouts. the code looks clean in comparison to tables, the down fall is old browser support is not that great, and it relies on CSS.

At some point though it's high time to tell people still using IE 5.5 to bugger off and get themselves a new browser. Most, if not all, recent browsers support CSS 2.1, and xhtml strict.

Being able to render proper recip links -and- having it validate xhtml strict would be very nice for me due to the way I handle my free site building.

Agreed, I will be sure the public release will include the XHTML feature.

I am still not sure how to handle the images, should I distribute them in a zip?
not sure hotlinking is an option..

If they have images, sure, why not; if you do a website where people can get their recips, then you could auto-generate a zip with all the required images... Archive::Zip is your friend

Hi p3rlphr33k.

Updating recips for clitpass.com won't be necessary.
Although I have only one default recip table
it's only for registered PA webmasters.

no problem, the registered LL's will only be included if the LL owner would like to participate. otherwise i have no intentions of prying. I have not been through the entire list only open submission sites will be included. partner account recips will be added at the discretion of the user or upon request of the LL owner. Thanks!

To keep your maintance down, you might want to run a hash script to check the different LL pages to scan for changes.

I had planned on building a small indexing spider and keep a local copy of each recip page on the server, then just run a cron to compare the local copy to the actual. if any differences were found i would have a log of the difference and what URL, then i could decide if it were a recip update or a page update... well have to see how this pans out. I figured then i would know if i needed to reindex or update recips .
