Google Launches New Cell-Phone Services

Kinda cool...

Quote:
Google Inc. on Tuesday unveiled two new services with which users can find local business listings or get driving directions through their cell phones.

A new Web site, Google Local, for users with XHTML-enabled browsers on their phones can search for a local business, figure out how to get there and provide a zoomable map of the area, Google said.

Users can also retrieve driving directions with text messages via Google SMS, the company added. Currently, users can send a text message with a search query and receive addresses, stock quotes, weather and movie listings.

The company said Google Local is available in the United States and Canada, while Google SMS is supported by most U.S. wireless carriers.

Google shares fell $1.86 to $191.37 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.

Check this article out below... it discusses some Google patents that the USPO just posted on March 31st.

It talks about ranking documents by things like:
- a page's value to advertisers
- whether a page appears in a news article online
- if a surfer has the page in their bookmarks (anyone predict a Google webbrowser soon??)
- the cache and cookies a surfer has from a site
- how many years in advance a domain is registered for!!
- how many times a certain site is chosen from a set of search results (it's click-thru rate)

Pretty crazy stuff... not all of it good sounding.

And let's not forget Google recently hired Ben Goodger, lead developer of FireFox. Foreshadowing a bit.. it's easy to see where things are probably headed....
