Jim, I am no- anti-virus just a firewall, and I use outlook (but not outlook express, which has more holes in it). Any attachment sent to any email account I access from here is automatically deleted. I use hotmail for attachments if needed (and it is surprising how rarely you really truely need an attachment!).

The only issues I ever have involve security holes in the browser, usually people resetting home pages, adding favorites, and downloading toolbars or whatever. Usually one asshole per month is all I get now.

Cleo: I am doing some classes on Macs now, OS 9.2. I almost spit my coffee up when they told us we had to go set memory allocations before we could run photoshop. I guess the 80s have lived on! Anyway, it is really fun around the school, because all the arty teachers are hugely into Macs, and they are all excited about the dual processor G5... sort of like being in some sort of group mind thing. Very weird!

Good after they get a G5 they will have to run a modern OS and put classic to rest. Basically the same people who are still running System 9 are the same kind of folks that are still running Windows98 on the other side.

Just so you know you do not set memory in Mac OS X, it's *nix and uses the same memory that all *nix machines use.

Jim it is just people hating to learn anything new. I just switched the NFL Alumni over to Mac OS X today. Once I sat down with them and showed that it wasn't that much different then Mac Classic they get really happy, but until then I had a room full of grown men crying like little babies having their toys taken away. :D

How about just a computer board, can't we all get along. :D

If there were more Mac users, I would have no problem with putting up a forum for them. Just so I wouldn't have to read how much better they are than PCs. But, the fact is, there are not enough Mac users to setup a separate forum.

How many Mac uses surf this board?

For that matter how do you know for sure since many Mac users change the browser's user agent so that they are let in sites where idiot web designers block pages from browsers other then IE. Just last month I went to renew the plates on my car and I had to change my browser's user agent to IE so that I could renew. It's crazy, the site worked just fine in Mozilla so why do they do crap like this?

Hey Cleo,

I am testing the latest version of iCab now and it rocks.. 1,9 MB, tabs, built in email and way too fast :) Oh and you can define its identity, stop popups, 1000's of options, I like it a lot.
Desing ers need all possible browsers installed anyway to test their sites and work, correct?
So it is a pleasant surprise.

I had the odd thought of coverting one of my PC boxes to *nix, and then stuffing the apple OS on the top, but I suspect there must be some reason that wouldn't work. I would be funny to have a non-mac mac.

Cleo, the school's problem is that it isn't 1 box, they would have to update about 50 boxes, and re-do certain parts of each course that uses them. They MIGHT MAYBE do it over the summer next year. With the amount of course material to re-write, they aren't in a rush.

I personally wasn't impressed at all the OS 9 or the machine I was working with (which was a tower style unit, 512 meg of ram), in photoshop it just wasn't very zippy, and the constant having to use the keyboard instead of just right mouse button... well, that is just hard to get use to. I like the idea that the scroller wheel on my mouse will do zoom. Can you do that stuff on the newer macs?

I find it distracting to filter out Mac responses that don't apply to the thread topic. I just figured they could all share their tips n tricks in one place instead of clogging the main boards. |rasta|

Alex it is so different, but somehow so much the same. Yeah full keyboard access, full right mouse button support, but still optional fro those that don't like more then one button. The system that you are using is from 1984 with a bunch of features added in over the years.

Mac OS X is basically Linux with a Mac interface and just about all the Mac software has been ported over. http://www.apple.com/macosx/

Surfn I think a computer board would be nice since we all do use computers and they all suck at some point, it could be split up into OSs.

Opti...just for the hell of it, go to norton and use their free tool to look for viruses. I would be willing to bet you have over 50 running right now.

I am actually pretty careful.. and I run this test pretty regularly

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I do recieve a lot of virus attachment to emails but i use a really good local email filter called spamkiller and am just very careful about what I do.

Once upon a time I took the time to use the websitegarage.com security check tune up and read everything on what security settings did what and how to setup your machine so it doesnt attract attention from scanners... a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing but it gave me enough confidence to not use Norton.. I know it's a risk saying this.. but I havent had a virus since.

I'm not suggesting other people not use norton.. but I regularly grind my 2.4ghz 1gb ram pc to a halt and it really is worth it not to have norton taking 10% of system resources and slowing down drive operation if I dont absolutely have to.

This is a good thread!

Hey does anyone believe the myth that a lot of the biggest anti virus companies where started out by people who were writing the same virusses they were protecting against?
