That keyword spam of text and background color is generally a no go on google they have it worked into the spiders to recognize. Some of the lesser engines may still bite but who cares.
Follow the Google rules and watch the SE forums for solid tips and you can get amazing results.

I can't convey enough how much influence Steve Krug's book has had on me and feel it's the overall best possible tip of the bunch.

Any time I get stuck I glance Steve's book and it helps. Those of us who make our own sites sometimes can't see the forrest before the trees 'cos we're too into a particular aspect.

Nope - don't know the guy nor have I used his services. When I first read the book it opened a HUGE part of my brain. "Don't Make me think" made ME think *a lot*...and then some more. :)
