I allways dreamed of owning a huge property with a stream running through it

I know this sounds stupid but
I would love to build a dam and generate electricty from it

put a temp dam and pipes in to reroute the water
exavate the dam area
pour concreate, run the pipes and setup the turbines

I could spend the rest of my days messing with the dam and be a very happy man

Us Gov recommended terrorist prep package consisting primarily of a gas mask and duct tape... pretty lame. I decided to add cheese and crackers too.

You wouldn't own the stream, the state would. But you could build kind of a reverse water wheel to do the trick. And, I know of a piece of property that will be up for sale really cheap in the spring if you don't mind rebuilding the house :)

Bill 2006-02-07 02:19 PM

Jim's right, there are only a few states in the country now where you would be able to do that. But it is a grand fuckin idea, I'd agree with that.

I drew up plans to put whats called an undershot wheel in the stream, which would make enough power to run some computers and lights, back when I was obsessed with such things. But a few solar panels would do that job better.

Now there are so many DEP rules about waterways you really can't do much of anything with a stream - which I suppose is the best thing.

An interesting thing- there is the remains of an early 1800's stone dam just above me on this stream, and there is a 1901 steel dam that is 40 feet high just below me - the dam pond below me literally forms one of the edges to my property. My house used to be part of an 1800's industrial complex that was based on the power of the stream, with grain mills, saw mills, and the like. My house is on some list of the oldest houses in the area, it even has a cool name, which I'm not gonna post on an open board because it would reveal where it is, and I like my anonymity.

It's a pain in the butt to have an old house, but kinda cool at the same time.
