Sometime next week, when I'm not playing catch-up, I'll post a different version of how LL's & TGP's came about - not that CaptainJSparrow's version is wrong, it's just that mine is different :)

Saw this by Matt Cutts (it's not new but it is relevant to this conversation) about Page Rank sculpting and it made me think of this thread. Basically, in the old days when LL's came about, they were all about Page Rank sculpting but now the big G penalizes for such link schemes:
