I'm totally new to this so I've been coming here for advice to help me get started and was told to make some free galleries and banners. I shouldn't have any trouble with designing the galleries, but I've been trying to come up with some banners and they look mediocre at best.

I assume you're trying to rotate ads on different spots on your sites(s), but you need the ads to fit the real estate.

OpenAds will do that for 'ya, although it's far from simple. You can set up you niches as "advertisers", set up your sponsors as "campaigns", then set up zones for each banner size. You do need MySQL running on your server, but most hosts have that. You can also set it up on one domains and serve ads on all your other domains from there. Best of all, it's free. |thumb

If you want to go that route I'll give you a hand setting it up. I'm running it on 4 different hosts so I know it fairly well.

Spaceman - thanks. I actually have a rotator script written in php, that was given to me by another webmaster. Its a simple script and it calls the banners based on size (he has it set for each specific size with a few changes to the script) example where I want 120x60 banners to appear I place the banners_120 . php and where I want the 468x68 banners I place the banners_468 . php, etc. The only problem I see with that is that if I add a new sponsor, or remove a sponsor etc I have to then go in and edit the DB - am I making any sense?

BTW - I am not against learning and working with OpenAds at all.

Sounds like what you're saying is that there's not a web based interface that makes it easy to add sponsors, banners, etc. That you have to manually add them to the DB. Without knowing what sort of DB it uses on the backend and how the script works, I really can't tell you much. I'll be glad to take a look though.

With OpenAds, you do pretty much the same thing. Wherever you want a 120 X 60 banner, you place a little code on your page and it'll serve all banners of that size from all of your sponsors. If you want a 468 X 60 banner, you place a different bit of code. Then you can create your ads, with text if you want, in whatever editor you use (notepad, Frontpage, etc) and paste into the script. Then it's just a matter of clicking a check box to link the ad to the correct bit of code and they'll start loading. Deleting and disabling sponsors/ads is one click deal. Adding new sponsors isn't much more involved.

There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's not too bad. And once you get it figured out it's a pretty powerful script. It'll serve the ads, and once it gets some history data stored it places more priority on the ads that get clicked on more. It also has some stats reporting for ad views and ad clicks that's pretty slick.

I have been watching this thread over the christmas period and have to say congratulations to everyone involved for a job well done. It's not very often that this level of expertise comes together to freely offer help across such a wide spectrum of projects and ideas but this has certainly helped out a lot of people.

I haven't added anything to the list of offers as just about every option has been covered but i am looking for help updating my htaccess to include a bot trap if anyone knows enough on the subject?
The trap should automatically identify attempts to access secure areas on the domain or multiple unnecessary hits and add the bad bot or crawler to the htaccess files ban list.

If anyone has knowledge of this, your help would be appreciated and i would be happy to let anyone else have a copy of the file once it's completed, tested and running safely. I do have a fairly extensive list of banned objects already but bear in mind, that what may be bad for one domain may not be the case for all of them and you should review the banned list before just adding it to your own domain.
