The "My Site, My Rules" does apply to my site, your site, the other guy's site, the girl down the road's site - everyone :)

Big, small, short or tall - every link list has their own rules & if you want to submit your site to them, you need to follow those rules :)

I'll back up what Greenguy is saying. There is nothing but positives for using this method. Both for free sites makers and link list webmasters. It's a win-win with just a slightly extra bit of effort.
