Foe me, the board is getting slower and slower, anyone else?

It often takes 3-10 refreshes to get a page to load.

It's been bad for a while but it is getting worse.

Am I the only one having this problem?

I thought this was a mysql problem that was going to be fixed, but it's still pretty bad for me.

Cleo 2003-11-08 06:25 AM

It has been fine for me lately.

Do a traceroute, maybe it is a routing issue.

Surfn 2003-11-08 07:23 AM

The loading speed goes back and forth for me. Last night it was slower than old people fuck. Now it's a tad better |sad|

ardentgent 2003-11-08 08:14 AM

It had been slow for me but the last fews days it has been fine.|bananna|

Greenguy 2003-11-08 08:33 AM

Oddly enough, I got an email last night saying they tinkered with the box & changed some configs & whatnot, because they know the board is a little slow too.

Being on a cable modem, it's really hard for me to notice a change in load time & unless a page is really, really slow, I rarlely notice load times :(

So, I guess it's time for a poll........

It fluctuates for me. Today, and the last few days, it has been loading fine for me. Some days it just sits there waiting for the banners to load.

Maybe it would be a good idea to put the free content and any other high BW items on another server, don't know just a suggestion.

Jim 2003-11-08 08:57 AM

I have good and bad days too. Actually, good and bad hours.

MrMaryLou 2003-11-08 09:54 AM

I it always loads fine for me I am on cable but its always the same :)

Linkster 2003-11-08 10:49 AM

Bill - I had a similar problem a while back - of course everything was slow fo rme - found out I had realsched.exe running in my processes in the task manager - cut that out and everything went back to zooming - best it can on a dial-up modem anyway :)

docholly 2003-11-08 11:14 AM

i get 'double' loads sometimes.. it loads the page then reloads it again on its own.. kinda weird..

For the last 30 hours the same here, sometimes with graphics sometimes without. It loads a page quick, then hangs just before loading the next one for a couple hours, then the page loads with a bang. |couch|

Just so everyone knows, PHP and MYSQL is being tweaked to make everything run faster. I suspect that over the next week, we will see a lot of improvements.

NotThatKevin 2003-11-08 09:29 PM

Like DD I find it very very slow from Australia. I had to reload 3 times to post this message.

Dr Bizzaro 2003-11-08 10:33 PM

The other day it was painfully slow, but today sems much better.

RawAlex 2003-11-08 10:42 PM

Jim, today it seems okay, some slowdowns and such, nothing really specific, although I have a feeling that there are two issues at work here:

The banner rotator for the 7 banners on the page is a little slow. I am thinking that you are calling 7 seperate instances of it, rather than calling it once to do all the work. Not sure of the solution here, but it seems to be an issue from what I can see. Are you using mysql_pconnect?

Also, you might want to look at the page structure to make sure you are not doing too much as "tables in tables"... make the top section with the banners and such one piece, make the center one piece, and make the bottom a piece. After each section, have php do a flush command to force it to send the block so far, which will help that part appear on the screen faster.

Finally, look at things that are done dynamically that can be done hard coded, such as lists of smilies... Maybe have the first 30 be a predone piece of code, so you don't have to open a database to get them, as it doesn't change that often. Run a new code insert when you add new ones.

Oh yeah... check closely to make sure that database items that are being sorted on are INDEXED. It is often the single most forgotten part of DB developement. If you are sorting things by username, make sure that username in that table is indexed. That will make it MUCH faster, as the machine won't have to do a sort each time it is accessed, only when something is added or removed.

Keep up the comments guys. The techs at National Net are reading them and paying attention.

matt 2003-11-09 03:17 AM

It's really slow from here, have to refresh to see a page quite often...This is the same for many other Aussie webmasters I talk to too.

urb 2003-11-09 05:51 AM

It's very fast from where I am (midlands, UK).

Like Shit Thru A Goose (never heard that expression before) |jester|

urb 2003-11-09 06:05 AM

I just hit refresh on this thread..... 8 seconds to load the page.

Using Mozilla with broadband.

Surfn 2003-11-09 06:28 AM

Today is a new day :) and I must say the board is zipping along at the speed of frozen snot |sad|

Greenguy 2003-11-09 07:33 AM

Did ya ever stop & think that maybe we just don't like Australians?
