Blacklist

I have a problem I hope someone can help me with. My sites were all off line for several days and now when I try to get listed at Smut Gremlins I get taken to a page that says my domain is blacklisted. I go through the appeal process and explain that everything is fine now but I can't get off the blacklist. The info presented says that direct inquiries to the webmaster will be deleted. It's been 3 weeks now and I can't get off the blacklist. What can I do?

Cleo 2003-09-13 07:46 PM

What is the e-mail and domain that you are using?

Licker4U 2003-09-13 08:38 PM

My e-mail is yourlicker@aol.com and the domain is fuckpage.com

Cleo 2003-09-13 08:46 PM

I didn't put you on the list so I can't help you, but I have a feeling that whoever did put you on the list will be reading this thread within the next 12 hours or so and will have an answer for you. :)

sabaroth 2003-09-14 04:56 AM

Same here.
Did 2 appeals, no reaction yet so far.
Domain sabarothic.com
Email: webmaster@sabarothic.com
Most annoying is not having a clue as to why.

Licker4U 2003-09-14 08:38 AM

I can imagine that not knowing why your are blacklisted would be a real pain. I know why I was blacklisted but the problem has been corrected. I'm not sure if Smut Gremlins put me on the list but it's the only link list that sends me to the blacklist page. As far as I can tell everyone else I submit to accepts my submissions. (Half don't respond one way or the other) If a link list owner just doesn't want my sites, fine. Tell me. I'm sure they will survive without my sites and I'll damn sure survive without them, I just need to know. If they have an appeals process in place I think that after three weeks someone could respond.

Also, is there any way to find out what link lists use that blacklist?

I looked in the admin your domain was blacklisted once and then released then black listed a second time for the same thing :(

Licker4U 2003-09-14 10:50 AM

That's true. The first time was the fault of my server, the second was my fault. Does that mean I am forever on the blacklist?

Greenguy 2003-09-14 08:02 PM

fuckpage.com is in there twice - I do give 2nd chances, but rarely 3rd chances.

yourlicker@aol.com - is not blacklisted

sabarothic.com - I didn't add that one, so I can't help you there :(

Licker4U 2003-09-15 08:57 AM

Does that mean you won't accept my sites? I've submitted several to your link list in the last few weeks and haven't heard one way or the other...

Also, how does the blacklist work? When I submit to Smut Gremlins I get directed to the blacklist/appeals page but older sites are still listed there and sending traffic. Is it only new sites that won't be accepted? And as I said before, Smut Gremlins is the only link list that sends me to the blacklist/appeals page. Do link list owners use the blacklist without giving any notification?

Greenguy 2003-09-15 09:10 AM

There's about 10 or 12 of us that use the same blacklist - some wish to remain anonymous.

Licker4U 2003-09-15 09:24 AM

I can appreciate the anonymity thing. But my question is: Do any link lists use the blacklist to refuse sites without notifying the webmaster?

Greenguy 2003-09-15 09:47 AM

Most of us do not inform you that you are blacklisted - the thinking behind it is that we were not informed that you were redirecting the site, so why should we inform you that you're blacklisted.

Licker4U 2003-09-15 11:29 AM

I didn't redirect anything. When my server is down, THEY redirect to a page on the server with a stop sign, and some wording which I don't recall at the moment. When I know there is a problem I would be MORE than happy to notify ALL 10 or 12 of you, but how can I with the cloak of anonymity in place??

Surfn 2003-09-15 12:03 PM

trey4u - if you are using the host you are responsible for knowing what happens if a surfer or link site gets a 404. If the 404 on your site is a console hell then it is YOUR console. Ignorance is no excuse. This is why most LL recommend getting your own hosting. Many people have used the same excuse you are giving for many years.

There is a simple solution. Purchase a domain and server your sites from it :)

Licker4U 2003-09-15 12:39 PM

Evidently you're making two incorrect assumptions:

1. I DO own my domain
2. I DO pay for hosting..at Netherweb
3. I DO know when there is a problem

I was told that the thinking behind not notifying me of being blacklisted is the fact that I did not notify anyone of a redirect of my site. This is a Catch-22. How can I notify someone when I don't know who to notify??

And who said anything about a console hell?

Surfn 2003-09-15 01:04 PM

This is another reason why you are having problems your story keeps changing. Best of luck

Licker4U 2003-09-15 01:17 PM

What changed?

RawAlex 2003-09-15 02:26 PM

Trey: if you server is DOWN, then there should be no page served. a 404 page comes from your SERVER, so your server must have been up... you might of had other issues, but a down server returns NOTHING, not a 404 page. As far as anyone can tell, a 404 page means the server is up, the domain is up, and the page is gone.

If your server is going to be down for an extended period of time you should email ALL the LL you submit to and let them know that your server is down and will be for a while or whatever. You shouldn't just notify the ones who use that blacklist.

Like Alex said, if the server is down there should be nothing, not a 404. I personally had 18 hours of downtime on a server with a few domains at a host I was "trying out" 4 months ago and I didn't really need to email anyone as my sites were coming up DNS so not a reason for blacklisting. I did however post it here as I know most of the bigger LL and the ones I submit to post here.

I of course dropped that try out host.

If your email is not blacklisted then you're fine but you will need to be a little more careful whether it is your fault or your hosts for the future.

Licker4U 2003-09-15 04:15 PM

I never said anything about 404 pages, that was Justsurfn. But we're getting way off base. I was asking about the blacklist that a handfull of link lists use. I was told that the reason I don't get notified of being on the list is because I don't notify anyone when my site redirects. I'm too stupid to know how to redirect. After I build a site and submit it, I forget it and move on to the next project. I don't remove any sites once they're uploaded, I don't go make ANY changes, I don't even go back and look at them. Only two things have happened in the last year. My server has been down briefly on occasion, most recently was a load balancer and then a switch, and my account with my server was closed due to a disagreement over the bill, which was resolved. I didn't intentionally do anything. But...I knew within hours when the server was down, and when my account was closed. My point is, even though I KNEW my sites were down, I didn't know who to notify of the problem. As I said before, I would gladly notify ANY link list of problems, but if the webmasters wish to remain anonymous, how CAN I notify them? And as I said above, I didn't do anything to my sites to cause a redirect, no removals, no html changes, no script additions, absolutely nothing.

Best advice and cheap to do too.

trey4u - if a server goes down, that means that you can not get to anything on the server & the link bot is given a "no dns" error message. No one blacklists for this, because it we all know it's a server error.

fuckpage.com was blacklisted for "302 after listing" which means that the site(s) that were listed were redirecting to another page. That means that someone went in & edited the htaccess to send the link bot (or surfer) to another page. This is not possible is the server is "down" (see above)

And the blacklist that I use is not the only one in existence - most link admin scripts come with a blacklist option, so getting upset about this one is not going to help - odds are you're blacklisted at alot of places.

If you have problems with your host, move to a new one & get a new domain.

Licker4U 2003-09-16 11:37 AM

If that's the case, I REALLY would appreciate knowing which site/sites gave the 302 error. I know nothing about htaccess so it wasn't anything I did. I'll change servers when I know they did, or allowed something like this to hapen. Can you find out what site(s) did this?
