Anyone Switch From IE Recently?

I just made the switch from IE to FireFox (the browser component of Mozilla), and must say I like it way better. Much faster, safer, more customizable. Seems like I'm not alone according to this AVN Article.

Anyone here make the switch recently? Is IE on it's way out?

I switched to firefox and it's a big improvement on explorer. No idea if explorer is on the way out though. I think most savvy surfers - who are familiar with changing browsers - will make the switch. I can't imagine people like my dad swtiching though. Since explorer comes bundled with windows, it's still going to have a strong following. I'm happy though and it's faster than mozilla.

I'm a Safari user myself but then I'm also a Mac user.

IE on the Mac is a real POS, really slow and buggy. It is no longer made for the Mac and the most recent version is version 5 which is just a bad port of the Classic version.

What gets me is how many Mac users still use IE instead of the Mac's default browser Safari. When I ask them why they usually say something like how else would I surf the internet? |banghead|

New security problems with IE released today.

Start using Opera 3 week’s ago. I’m never going back.
LOVE the mouse gestures: http://www.opera.com/features/mouse/

You can browse pictures in galleries using “hold right button, click left button” without going back and clicking thumbs!
Reload web site. Right click move mouse up/down.
Go to URL without copy-paste: Greenguyandjim.com just mark the text, right click and Go to URL.

One month ago I had constant pain in my right arm, today is gone. Coincidence? I think not!

Plus is the fastest browser you can get… |headbang|

I've been using firefox for three months now, I'm very happy with it.

Now when I run ad aware or something like that it just find some cookies and not the usual crap it used to find when I was using IE.

me too, Like Opera very much

Doesn't Opera come with built-in advertisments(?).... that would be distracting..
Anyhow, I think all the non-IE browser (Opera, Safari, Netscape) are based on the original Mozilla codebase so they *should* display pages the same way... correct me if I'm wrong.

FireFox/Mozilla also has a big repository of free extensions so you can add whatever browser features you want... I just added Mouse Gestures, ad-blocking, flash-ad blocking, and the Googlebar... quite nice.

Mozilla and its cousins like Firefox and Thunderbird is based on the Gecko engine. The Gecko engine came out of Netscape's ashes.

Safari is based on Khtml engine as in Konqueror which is very different then the Gecko engine.

Not sure what Opera is based on but I don't think it is the Gecko engine or the Khtml engine.

That's right it was Gecko. I stand corrected. :D

I think i'll give firefox a try... I just like IE becaues it's integrated into the shell.

Opti 2004-07-15 07:25 AM

I gave Firefox a pretty good try.... and went back to IE.

SirMoby 2004-07-15 08:22 AM

FireFox is an interesting browser. I've used some html tricks for years and the only browser to have any issues with those tricks is FireFox.

The funny thing is that if Netscape or IE didn't display these pages correctly then everyone would call it a POS and bitch but since it's a Mozilla version everyone wants the code changed.

How messed up is that?

anteyes 2004-07-15 04:24 PM

Firefox about 2 weeks ago.. I'm forcing my friends to switch now since they are bitching about spyware.

RawAlex 2004-07-15 07:46 PM

firefox as well... although I still use IE in some very specific situations. Firefox isn't 100% compatible (I couldn't trace a package on purolator with it, example).

tabbed pages, yadda-yadda... it's not terrible - and I don't have to spend my days dodging idiot spyware.

Same here. I recommend them both to all surfers.

Alphawolf 2004-07-15 09:50 PM

BTW, the web developer add-in for Firefox is REALLY awesome. Just installed in now.

Jeremy 2004-07-16 05:05 AM

Firefox & Thunderbird here - Tbird really does have some very nifty features.

glumn 2004-07-16 05:13 AM

netscape 7.1

I switched to Netscape few years ago and I am satisfied... the 7.1 version rocks..
I hate IE at all

urb 2004-07-16 12:54 PM

I really like IE, Mozilla, Opera and Mozilla Fire Fox.

I use all four browsers almost every day.

But I would seriously think twice about surfing any "unknown" site using IE.

Think about it like this... would you go surfing off the coast on a surfboard covered in raw meat? Or would you opt for a surfboard without meat?
