The Official Hurricane Jeanne Grab Your Ass and Hold On Tight Thread

It is looking very bad for Palm Beach. I live half way between Palm Beach and Miami so if it turns just a few miles south we could get a direct hit which would be a first as Fort Lauderdale has never had a direct hit from a hurricane.

In any case it is a category 3 now and they say it may become a category 4 before tonight when it hits.

I'm safe in my house with all my windows covered with storm shutters so I'll be fine but dreading losing utilities again. My house is built out of cement block with a low pitched roof and is basically built like a bunker to withstand even a direct hit from a category 5 hurricane. I'm also on high ground so it is very unlikely that a storm surge would have any effect on my location.

Be safe and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

Surfn 2004-09-25 12:48 PM

Maybe all these hurricanes will make them rethink the location for next summer? :D

Cleo 2004-09-25 12:55 PM

I'm already bored.

Hurricanes are mostly just really inconvenient, uncomfortable and very boring.

Once I recover from having a hectic morning of putting up storm shutters and picking up last minute supplies I'll probably build and submit something or play with the demo version of links that I'm checking out.

Who knows maybe I'll get real lucky and not loose electric or internet.

LMAO.. surfn, your smilie is too cute!!!!

Cleo: just when you thought it was safe to cum out from under those trees..

Hope the mango survives!!!!

The huge ficus that is in my backyard worries me. I had it trimmed back a lot but its branches are huge and it is over my office and living room.

I never knew that ficus tree roots just grow along the surface of the ground so they fall over very easily.

Maybe its a stupid question.. but why do these people have their cars parked within 100 feet of the sea! :(

Ok one is a news van.. but shit I'd be goooooooooooone....

DD

Cleo 2004-09-25 05:33 PM

I like watching the patio cam and every now and then you will see someone hanging on to a pole standing sideways. :D

The wind is really picking up outside my house. Wish I could see what is going on. I did open my front door to try to look out earlier but got hit with a face full of water and leaves so I had to slam the door shut.

Torn Rose 2004-09-25 05:40 PM

the winds are really starting to pick up here, TV just said we should get 110 to 130 mph winds in our area within the next 5 hours.

I'm bored....

Cleo, want to go grab a few drinks?

Cleo 2004-09-25 05:44 PM

Sure lets meet down the street from me at the Elbow Room.

I was thinking of going for a bicycle ride down to the beach. I've never done 100 mph on a bicycle before and thought it would be kind of kewl. :D

Hey Cleo and eveyone else in our beautiful state,
I wish you lots of luck. I'm bunkered down in my dark cave as well. Seems the track is either gonna take it right by us or right across us. Oh well, we can just wait and see. Seems that they are ordering mantatory evacs. for this coast as well.

It is just so huge! Oh well, we probably won't lose power until tomorrow. I hope....

I am watching footage from Hollywood Beach (where Internext was held) and it is already really windy and rainy and the surf is really high. Wow, this is not gonna be a good one... |scared|

Porn Princess 2004-09-25 05:52 PM

Sitting in Lake Worth, just south of West Palm...just waiting for the power to go out. Here we go again!|hurricane

I'm absolutely hating the thought of no power again. Eight freakin days last time.

The wind is really starting to howl here now...

Cleo and all others here, be safe!

Cleo 2004-09-25 06:06 PM

I looked outside and it wasn't really raining or had very much wind so I went outside so that I could look over my house and see how the tress in my backyard are doing. Trees are fine but all of a sudden the wind picked up so bad that I had a hard time getting back into my house.

This is the corner of Las Olas and A1A.

I live 1/2 of a mile east and 2 miles north of it.

Losing utilities is the worse. I'm hoping that all of mine stay on this time. I'm also hoping to win the lottery next time I play. I'm guessing that I have about an equal chance at each.

Ramster 2004-09-25 06:50 PM

That's looking nasty. Good luck!!!!!!!

Porn Princess 2004-09-25 07:01 PM

Being shuttered in, that's great for being able to see what going on out there!

I'm not sure how much a person is expected to take all at once. My little brother was in a critical car accident a week ago Wed. He is in a coma in acute care in St. Mary's trauma unit. We ended all life sustaining efforts, after having to fight with staff and administration to let him go. And now I can't go be with him in what could be his last moments. My mother was able to be allowed to sit out the hurricane in the ICU waiting room, with all her gear in tow.

What a nightmare of a month. Ack!

I need a drink or 10!

But, I think I'm on auto pilot, floating about, just seeing how the storm and all else pans out.

I'm thinking you're right about the lotto chances. Bad odds pay off good though.

The lights are flickering now, so I think it's time to shut this down and curl up on the couch.

Cleo 2004-09-25 07:29 PM

That is terrible :(

My condolences. I don't know what else to say. :(

Don't compound it by taking chances, stay safe, and keep in touch please. :)

Wind is really picking up here. It sounds like planes are driving past my house.

Lost power about twenty minutes ago so I'm running on batteries here.

OMG..that is terrible..My heart goes out to you and yours..

Mom just spoke to her husband in West Pal..electric is out..good luck all..

Alphawolf 2004-09-25 09:28 PM

Porn Princess: That's so sad. :( Man...

To all down there- hope all the 'weak' trees, lightpoles, etc...have already been knocked down.

Be as safe as ya can!

Bill 2004-09-25 09:33 PM

Cleo, you get to have all the fun! ;-}

What with global warming and the antarctic glaciers melting for a 4 foot global sea level rise, I predict a new Florida tourist industry- "Live Thru a HURRICANE!". People will flock to 300mph-proof concrete dome houses to listen to the winds roar and watch the fig trees fly thru the air behind bulletproof glass!

The extreme sports types will tough it out in mobile homes!

T Pat 2004-09-25 09:37 PM

Porn Princess my heart goes out to you and your family, hang in there it can't get any worse

Cleo 2004-09-25 09:45 PM

Could put a sail on a mobile home and go storm surfing. :D

I have a little weather radar thing in my menu bar that shows the weather with a radar image. I just snapped this pic of my desktop. You can really see the eye of the storm. www.cleoslinks.com/crap/desktop.jpg

The Day Cleo Hit Fort Lauderdale

Cleo 2004-09-26 07:17 AM

Always nice to have a hurricane named after one's nick. :D

My power just came back on. |roses|

Took a fast look outside and it doesn't look too bad. It doesn't look like I lost any more trees. I'm amazed that my power just came back on.

I'm so over this that I'm just lost for words.

Surfn 2004-09-26 07:28 AM

Glad to see you are alright |smooch|

KCat 2004-09-26 01:53 PM

Wow! Power's back already? Great news.

Glad to hear you're safe & sound. |bananna|

Cleo 2004-09-26 02:13 PM

Power is back on again. |roses|

It want back off not long after I made my last post.

A huge ficus tree, much bigger then the one I had, on the next block took out the power lines and part of the homeowner's roof.

I've decided that ficus is only good for hedges and probably will cut the big one in my backyard even more before next hurricane season. I did have it trimmed a lot so that it wouldn't catch the wind and it does seems fine.

It is a quagmire of having shade in your yard or having trees joining you indoors uninvited it seems. The oaks, mangos, black olive and palms seem to do well but nothing is better for shade then a fast growing ficus trees. We also use ficus for hedges. As long as you trim them ever few months they really do make beautiful hedges.

Cleo 2004-09-26 03:01 PM

Anyone heard from Kat & Torn?

I feel very lucky after viewing a few of these.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sfl-vide...e-dots-utility

Cleo 2004-09-26 04:33 PM

I just spoke to Torn on the phone. Everyone is alright but they have no power and a large tree that was leaning after the last storm fell over and is in the street.

I see they are still trying to get the power on across the street from me. At least today is a very nice day and isn't too hot, actually it is a beautiful day, one of those days that is the reason I live here.

selena 2004-09-26 05:16 PM

If there are words to offer you, I don't know what they are. So I'm sending a ~hearthug~ over the miles.
