Just an FYI
I am getting a new cable modem installed today. The cable company told me it would take up to 3 hours for this new fancy really fast modem so I will be offline for awhile this afternoon. :)
|
Reading between the lines, Jim needs to take a 3 hour nap :D
|
Welcome to the broadband world...
Jim,
You'll be in love with your new modem and fucking high speeds. I could not live another day without DSL... 800Kb-1.5MB/s Rules. I'm turbo surfing the web, move out of my way or else...:escape: :bfg: Oral out... |
Oral69
I have that now...this one is just a little faster than that :) |
God - that's faaaast! Way out here in the sticks, cable company has yet to reach us. I'm still plodding along on 56k!!! LOL
Moving in August, thank god. :horse: |
I'm with kristian. The best I can connect at is 28.8 in this neck of the woods:(
I am waiting on a wireless solution that is supposed to be in the works out my way. |
I don't know how people can do business on the web using a dialup. :(
I've been on a 1.5k/256k ADSL line for many years. I was one of the first to get ADSL in my area. I was very lucky because the squirrels ate all the cables in my neighborhood so they had to install all new cables which meant I had nice modern wire when they started offering ADSL service and that is why I was able to get it so many years ago. Shit even satellite is better then a dialup. On average I do about 100 reviews a day and there is just noway I could do that on a dialup. |
Thanks - I feel much better now, Cleo LOL

If they don't get this wireless thing together then I will problably go with the satellite. My only other option would be to move.:leaving: |
I live way out in the woods. The phone company told me that I would not live long enough to see DSL out here. Got Direcway two say system about 6 months ago. Best $70 I spend a month.
|
My major hurdle with satellite is that my credit is crap and I don't have a cc (another thing I really should have:music: ).
|
56k here too :banghead:
|
amadman,
Have you looked into getting a visa with epassporte? There's no credit check involved and for $35 they'll send you a visa electron. But you may not even have to spend the $35. If your satellite company accepts online payments, the epassporte visa will likely be acceptable (it's a virtual visa, good pretty much anywhere you see the visa logo). Check 'em out if it sounds useful: http://www.epassporte.com |
I've been on Cable Modem about a year now.. I STILL don't think anyone else in my neighborhood knows it's actually available !!!!
Still screaming fast and always on!!! |

Boy Jim, 3 hours??? I just had 3meg/256k cable installed just this last Tuesday. Total time from start to surfing: 10 minutes :taunt:
Oh boy, I guess it helps running the coax before the tech showed up.... |

me too, can't get cable or DSL where I live |
Hmmm, I have DirecTV for my television service and they advertise that if you have a clear view of the southwest sky you can get satellite internet service. While it is not as good as DSL or cable it beats the hell out of dialup.
Here is the link if you want to check it out, http://www.dtv.direcway.com |

Wireless Internet is awesome! I owned a Wireless ISP until recently, depending on the equipment they use and how knowledgeable they are in the wireless technology field, it should be well worth the wait! ..and I should add, hella better than satellite and in *a lot* of cases, DSL and cable, but again it depends on the ISP. |
I'm setup with a satellite, pretty fast on downloads, forget about uploads though!
Ohhh and when the weather is bad, it doesn't work. The price you pay for living in the middle of nowhere |
Well
4 hours later and I am now setup :) |

Yeah Cleo
Nothing quite like a 6 megabit connection to get you surfing :) |
I've used the satelite thing for nearly 2 years now. Reviewing goes fairly quick, though the in laws dsl works better.
Sure the hell beats 28.8 which is what the dial up connects at. However for uploads I either schedule them to upload overnight, or if it's a big upload I go to the in laws and upload from there. And when it gets real stormy and the satelite goes down I just take a break. |

Do you happen to know any good sources of information about it online? I would like to learn more about it but all I seem to be able to find is comercial stuff. |
There are tons of mailing lists and such out there for Wireless ISP's where you can learn a ton about wireless networks and how they work. Those are probably the best source of information out there. It's hard to build a wireless broadband resource site and expect to cover everything, so most of the info. you will find is going to be in mailing lists where questions can be answered as they come up.
A couple of resources off-hand: ISP Planet's Fixed Wireless How-To 802.11 Planet ISP-Wireless Mailing List (Check out the archives here, although it is VERY massive - thousands of messages go through here on a weekly basis) Most of what you'll find is going to be commercial unfortunately...everything we had to learn we basically had to sit down with the actual equipment and learn it, although the mailing list above was always a great help to us. Though the commercial sites can have a lot of good information on how their products work, which can give you an idea of how things work in general. It's a very interesting business, especially if you're into technology and it's still relatively "new" technology, yet has been around for a while. It's just now starting to become more widespread as private ISP's are beginning to get sick of regulations and the monopolization from local and national phone and cable providers. Using wireless, we never had to deal with those companies and could deploy a competitive service VERY cheap and much faster than they ever could. |
Great thanks for the info and links Fuseblown.
Looks like I have some reading to do ;) Thanks again! :adore: |
No problem! From the mailing list archives, you should be able to find some more URL's and such to check out...I didn't have much of a bookmarks list for wireless stuff. Most of the info. I got was from the list and/or from conventions and training that I attended.
Enjoy! |
Seeing this talk about connections...I have to tell you. I also live in the sticks. I am just really lucky that I have the cable company that I do.
About 4 years ago, I ordered a T1 line...before cable modems were available. Forget the fact that it cost $5,000/month but it also took 6 months to get installed. I could actually watch the progress of the installation by going to the town next to ours and watch them run my separate wire from there to here daily. They moved at about 3 telephone poles/day. :) Then, cable modems came around and I told the phone company with their $5k/month bill to shove it up their asses. :) |
T1's are so cheap nowadays...I remember the days of $5,000/month though as well...had an ISP back in '96...we paid about $1,500 for a 56k Fractional T1 line to get started in the dial-up biz, lol.
Where I'm at now, we had T1 lines for about $775/month and as cheap as $500/month.. of course it helped that we were connected directly to the local fiber network that went between all of the phone companies in the area (we were in an old office building of one of the small telephone companies in the area), so we didn't have local loop fees to worry about, which is what makes those prices so high in the first place. Some of the wireless gear out there can push over 54mbps to a single connection, wish I had THAT kind of connection to my house right now. :D |
T1s are still expensive here...
I have no idea why. We also have DSL but it worked for 10 mins in the last 4 months. |
Being in the sticks probably isn't helping the cost of a T1 much. Also, if you were checking on prices to a residential location, then it won't be as cheap as a commercial location.
I wish I had a 6meg option without having to get a fractional T3 or 4 bound T1's. :( |
We live in the woods too and only have phone lines that can handle 26400!
Direcway 2 way saved my sanity! |
