no not yet on this moment i am on my other puter, the infected puter will run spybot, but shut down adaware and all, i cant get on the net anymore with that one.

Alphawolf 2005-01-27 07:13 PM

Try running in SafeMode and see if you can get various utilities to run.

And run task manager to see what is running in the background...shut down stuff that doesn't belong.

Linkster 2005-01-27 07:14 PM

can you run hijackthis on the infected computer? If so could you post the log from running it and maybe we can get rid of whatevers causing it

chilihost 2005-01-27 07:36 PM

you should also be able to run spybot search and destroy on your next reboot (download from spybot.info) and it will do a full scan on your system before anything else loads up thus being able to kill the spyware. Alternatively, check with your antivirus maker, they usually offer some sort of boot disk that you can grab from their website.

good luck, these things just totally suck!

cheers,
Luke

tiny 2005-01-27 07:48 PM

Back up all your stuff for work and format it you'll be better off.Do you have a external storage device.You might unknowly infect other folks.Atleast thats what i would do whatever you have is deep in the system anything thats important save to backup and wipe that puppy clean

ngb1959 2005-01-27 07:49 PM

I just had a bunch of computer problems similar to yours.

I had to uninstall that stupid spybot thing. It was messing up my computer. I also took off the alexa toolbar that messed it up and the google desktop thingy.

Had to reinstall adaware. Then it worked normal again.

MrYum 2005-01-27 09:07 PM

Hey there Stu...so sorry to hear that...damn those things really piss ya off |angry|

Much like ngb...I recently had a prob with spybot...damn thing ran freakin amok on my machine. Spiking cpu utilization to 100% and driving processor core temps up by over 20 degrees celcius. Stripped that sucker out...problem solved.

Had never really liked that software...always seemed a bit clunky. But it had sure never done that before!

Anyway, the point is...I found another spyware scanner that seems great. It found a few minor things on my system that other scanners had missed. And it doesn't seem to be a resource hog...even when it's actually scanning. Remaining resident...barely even know it's there.

Here's a link;

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...areInstall.exe

Yep, it's M$...apparently they bought out this company and are now M$ branding the scanner. Sure seems to work well though :)

Really hope you get it resolved soon :)

chilihost 2005-01-27 09:54 PM

MrYum thanks for that link, I am going to download it and see what its about right now!

cheers,
Luke

MrYum 2005-01-27 10:28 PM

My pleasure Chili...hands down the slickest scanner I've found to date :)

Also, for those of us using Firefox...there's an extension available now that REALLY speeds this sucker up! I've always liked Firefox but found it a bit slower than IE. Lived with the slowness for obvious reasons...til now.

What the heck...it's software link posting night for MrYum...lol.

Hopefully GG&J don't mind :)

Here's a link;

http://www.bitstorm.org/extensions/

Install the Tweak Network settings. Then go to tools...tweak network settings...enable POWER settings! Then buckle up...this sucker ROCKS now |headbang|

chilihost 2005-01-27 10:42 PM

wow, just ran the ms scanner and it is totally slick, it ran in under 3 minutes! plus it found one reg key that no other program found and fixed it up (for searchsquire.com).

cheers,
Luke

Yeah- you can do this manually as well. I just came across the info on another board couple days ago. Noticeable difference.

that microsoft thing i use that already, on this moment i have removed , spybot, adwware and some other stuff, mcfee is doing some scanning now, i can get on the net if i click the icon windows update in my start thing, that way i can change the adress to get to an other page, clicking a link on this board also works it open an new page, but if i click for a new page from my puter the "e" icon it restarts again, now if the viruscanners cant find anything , then the only thing what would be left is, an system restore, any advice if i can fuck something up with that too? because if it will be fucked up after the system restore i am gonna throw my puter thru the window. |devil|

stuveltje 2005-01-28 05:44 AM

btw just found out that also mcfee cant get thru my sysstem, at a certain point in
c:\documents and settings\hopeloos\Local Settings\.... the scanner stopt and restarted

Stuveltje - that log file looks clean except that I would shut off some of the virus programs as they may conflict with each other. I would also shut down Windows messenger unless you need it.
It looks like you have raid set up for your drives?
I noticed youre also loading Windows Media activeX on startup - unless youre doing a lot of D/L of movies and music constantly, it might be better to run that when you really need it.
I would then run the update to SP2 for Windows XP which will get a pretty fresh copy of all of the windows drivers - and if ya want the extra protection, the IE SP2 update as well - Ive been running it for some time and it seems to be running a little cleaner - has a builtin popup blocker.

I would also D/L and install the Webroot Spy Sweeper and let it run once to make sure that nothing is in your hosts file and some other little hidden places :)

Can you get IE to run and delete the files in the temp folder (including the offline files check box) - shouldnt need to clear your cookies.
Then using file manager or windows explorer look at the contents of the temp and temporary internet files folders under both your username and administrator and see if there's anything left in there other than cookies - everything else should be able to be deleted.
Starting to sound more like youve got a corrupted file in there somewhere in the temp inet folder

well thats what i think too .lol. now i only have to which one, i have deleted all the cookies and ofline stuff, me now double checking

stuveltje 2005-01-28 09:38 AM

what is an TMP-file and DMP-file, i see alot of things with that behind it

Linkster 2005-01-28 10:48 AM

Stuveltje - without looking it sounds like the .dmp files are the system dump files either from the errors you are having or from a failed windows update - the .tmp files are the files tht programs normally make during installs - both of which are files not normally needed - especially if you are getting ready to do a full upgrade to SP2 for XP

added - forgot to mention - the list of services doesnt show anything out of the ordinary - if you can look at the resources each is using it might give a clue to which one seems to be causing what is sounding like a memory collision - somethings using up the resources and the system is erroring out from your descriptions.

ha oke so i can remove the dmp and the tmp files? those are in that folder where the shit file is , i have checked a couple of times as soon a scanner comes to that file the puter will restart, i will look at the resouche thing to, thanks for helping me, because realy this drives me nuts

GenXer 2005-01-28 06:50 PM

I use this to clean up my computer, it seems to do a great job.

It's freeware and I've used it for a while now, always cleans up some stuff that some of my other programs can't.

The download site is here in case you are interested.

Sure, you can delete those.

You may also want tp post a screen shot of

start-->run--> type 'msconfig'

Click the startup tab.

Make sure nothing fighy is in there.

Genxer, i have use that also but nothing goes thru my puter realy every programs stops when getting to that certain folder.

Linkster 2005-01-29 09:09 AM

Stuveltje - did you have any luck removing those tmp and dmp files? You can also change the location of your IE temp file directory in IE - from tools/temporary internet files/setting/move folder - once thats done you should be able to go back to the original directory and delete it including all the contents - if there is a specific file in the temp/dmp files that wont allow you to delete it let me know

HC-Majick 2005-01-29 09:50 AM

another thought that i didn't see mentioned in this thread. There is a checkbox to have windows automatically restart when it encounters an error. if an important file got corrupted or deleted in the process of getting rid of a virus/spyware, windows will just reboot instead of showing the wonderful bluescreen. at this point i would just do a system restore and then go from there.

start->control panel->system->advanced->startup & recovery->settings
