is this person serious about the internet biz

just wanted to hear opinions
if someone is still on 56k modem after 5 years, do u really think they are serious about the adult internet biz.

buttster 2005-03-14 10:38 PM

they live on the outskirts of town and say they can't get high speed and they don't want to move. If I was serious I would do what ever it took to get somewhere that had some kind of high speed internet. with 56k u can't accomplish crapola these days.am i right or am i wrong. Thanx much!!

Cleo 2005-03-14 10:39 PM

Is there no other service available at their location?

Cleo 2005-03-14 10:42 PM

You posted about being on the outskirts of town at the same time I posted.

I guess they just have to make due with what is available. Moving just to get a better connection does seem a bit drastic. If it was me I would get a laptop and drive to someplace with WiFi each day.

cd34 2005-03-14 10:49 PM

so you're suggesting they move from the house that they live in to get better bandwidth to prove they are 'serious' about the adult internet business?

Not everyone can get DSL or Cable. Not everyone has a clear view of the Southern sky. Not everyone has GPRS Edge, wifi hotspots, PCS data at their house.

I have clients in countries where even dialup is expensive -- and they have conducted their business through dialup because they cannot get faster connections.

If they are happy with dialup, why does it bother you?

cd34 2005-03-14 10:51 PM

and really, what does bandwidth speed at home really have to do with it? with FXP enabled on most servers, they can download the content direct from their providers and put it on their servers, use imagemagick to tag it. Or they could ssh in and either FTP or WGET it.

I don't see any real reason that they would be that inconvenienced or need a high speed connection.

amadman 2005-03-14 11:08 PM

You have to use what you can get. High speed internet (cable) just recently became available here. I was one of the fist people on. But had to deal with dialup connections of less than 30k for many years before that.

buttster 2005-03-14 11:09 PM

i was asking the question because it seems now days if your on 56k u just cannot get as much accomplished as the competition can. if you run a tgp and u do reviews with 56k forget reviewing movie submits.

Useless 2005-03-14 11:14 PM

When I had dial-up I was perfectly happy. It's not until you enjoy the speed of broadband or dsl that you realize how slow dial-up is. Just because I don't bang my wife every night doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. (Not sure if that is in anyway analagous, but I felt like saying it.)

Kezza 2005-03-14 11:15 PM

You have to use the tools available to you...

I think moving to get a better connection does sound a bit drastic... particularly if you with happy with how things are.

LadyB 2005-03-14 11:30 PM

I've been in this business 5+ years and was on a dialup connection until 2 months ago when DSL was finally made available to me.

It sucked for sure, but as Kezza said.. you have to use the tools available to you.

So yes, in my opinion you can be serious about this business and still be on dialup :)

dareutwo 2005-03-14 11:43 PM

Reviewed thousands and thousands of sites on dial up.
It's not the size that matters.. :D

RawAlex 2005-03-14 11:45 PM

Here's the deal: if all you have is 56k, conduct your business in a way that works with your means. Running a movie TGP is probably NOT a good idea (and running anything where you have to review alot of stuff probably isn't best). Building and submitting free sites, galleries, graphic work, etc is all more than a little possible under your situation.

As Cleo said, get a laptop with a wireless, and get access through a hotspot in town is that is what you really need.

Truly desperate? Rent a super small office in town (or a 1 room apartment) where higher speed is available and work there 10 -12 hours a day, especially if you think you can make enough income to make up the extra expenses.

There are always options, work with what you got or find an effective way to make it better.

Alex

buttster 2005-03-14 11:47 PM

D u reviewed thousands of movie submits on dialup?
Damn u have more patience than I do I guess
He won't list movies because of it, and that hurts the traffic

dareutwo 2005-03-14 11:58 PM

Probably not thousands of movies... but many hundreds of them.
View source, check the links, you don't need to watch every movie.
Simple scripts can run when you're not. Like recip link checkers, etc...
Save the movie category for last... they can take 5-10 minutes each.
Watch tv, and review during the commercials.
Did that for about 3 years before getting satelite.
(I have moved twice since way back then - satelite again - on dsl now)

buttster 2005-03-15 12:02 AM

I guess I am just frustrated with seeing a tgp with 300k a day drop to 85k a day in 4 years. Probably has nothing to do with speed, just the blind links and the console hell sponsors that are used.

Allfetish 2005-03-15 02:11 AM

In some places it is all that you can get. For a while, I was conducting business, uploading content and the like over a sprint PCS phone! It was all the connectivity I had available to me at the moment. Now I have |bow| broadband |bow| .

Bill 2005-03-15 02:23 AM

Because I live in the country, I'm still on dialup. I've been on it all along, and made a substantial pile of money with it.

Like Alex said, if you are on a dialup, certain types of online work aren't practical. But, there is still money to be made.

Any amount of reviewing on a dialup would be insane.

Just recently cable modem became available here, but I'm not rushing to get it. I would want to keep the dialup anyway, because I have years of history with this email address. When I decide to do something businesswise that requires the speed, I'll get it, but so far I don't need it.

The only time I really miss it is when I need to move stuff around on servers- so, I have domains on older expensive servers that I should move to something better, but I hesitate, because it will take so many hours to download a copy off one server and upload to another.

i agree with you UW!

i had the same feeling..i was on DSL and then i moved to a new house so there was no DSL connection in the new place. I was using dial-up for almost a month and i can't get any work done - that's because i was used to a faster connection.

Head Boy 2005-03-15 04:24 AM

Your skills and imagination are more important. I can do more on a 400MHz Win98 machine on dialup, than many people can do with a new XP machine.

but I can do even more since I switched to NTL cable. :)

If someone is still not doing automated backups are they serious about the biz?
If someone is still using a CRT are they serious about the biz?
If someone is still working alone are they serious about the biz?
If someone doesn't go to at least 2 trade shows a year are they serious about the biz?

Of course Cleo might ask...
If someone is still running Windows are they serious about the 21 century? :D

Cleo 2005-03-15 08:40 AM

Browsing using Lynx is super fast even on a dialup.

Greenguy 2005-03-15 09:45 AM

The guy that used to host Jim & me lives in Iowa & he had nothing other than dial-up at the time. He managed the servers thru his dial up connection & makes a very comfortable living doing so.

We only left him because we got sick of the people he was co-locating with & having to wake his family up at 5 AM if there was a problem :D

Tommy 2005-03-15 01:55 PM

ya know I have a funny story about dialup and cable

when we first moved in here cable wasnt available and the phone lines are so dirty I could only connect at like 14k or whatever on a dial up

so I had to do something and started making phone calls
I arranged for a full t1 to be brought in to the house
the installation was like 5k and the monthly charge was like 800.00

and I had to wait like 4 months for instalation
I was despreate so I signed a 2 year contract

a couple weeks later I was talking to my neighbor and mentioned that it was very hard for me to work because of the dialup

well it turns out he's the vice presidnt of the cable company
(which I didnt know)
and had cable installed in my house the next week

3 months later the t1 got installed

plateman 2005-03-15 02:06 PM

Ouch tommy I've done other stuff when was desperate and later found out if I would have waited a little longer I could have saved money in your case a whole lot

True, but how could you be a porn webmaster and use Lynx? :D

ronnie 2005-03-15 05:49 PM

I had Dial-up for a the first couple years in this biz, had no choice, nothing affordable around.

Live in the country now, but lucky to get DSL. I would so dread going back to dial-up..:(

I worked for years on an ISDN line which is just a like two phone lines put together. I still had to dial in. It was all I could get at the time and I made it work. What's that saying about lemons and lemonade?

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?

of course not. i have people emailing me saying that they can't get vids to load over their dial-up. although there are vids that are supposed to be optimized for dial up, it's not the same

chilihost 2005-03-16 11:26 PM

I can set someone up with a solution for 56K that works better than most people's broadband connections - providing a full 100mbps pipe to the internet :D

cheers,
Luke

tickler 2005-03-17 02:10 AM

Well, I live out in cottage country, so the options for anything better than dialup are pretty limited.

Been looking at satelite($1000/hardware + $100/month), but, there is a rumor from some of the local techs that I may be able to finally get DSL this summer. So for now, I wait and see.

Dagwolf 2005-03-17 12:34 PM

I could manage with 56k, and I certainly would if it meant having a nice house in the country.

90% of my work can be done offline (in fact, I'd get a lot more work done if I couldn't surf or post on message boards...)

chilihost 2005-03-18 12:06 AM

Tickler, where do you live? I am in Australia and use Telstra's one-way satellite service @ 512K down and a painful 33.6K up. I had to do this because at the time this was all I could get. I would HIGHLY recommend staying off satellite unless you have no other choice, especially if you live in a cloudy / rainy area! Fortunately for me, it only seems to be rainy once every 3-4 months here in drought-stricken Brisbane.

cheers,
Luke

plateman 2005-03-18 12:35 AM

funny story about dial up is when I first got on line and discovered filesharing I remember having a movie download for 4 or 5 days straight and at the time no one I knew had high speed and I got it and the first thing I did was hit porn and had no pop - up blocker then and thats when consoles were popular and I had so many new windows open it was like a phone book on my monitor - dam I was scared and couldnt close them fast enough so I pulled the switch - LOL - I wish I fuck I would have started the webmaster thing then - I think we bought our first pc in fall of 99 and a year later got cable and started working on them and learning.. dam life is full of what if's and should have done that.. oh well |mml|

Dagwolf:
I love living out on the lake, take the laptop and sit down on the dock with a cold beer and check out the bikinis. Most folks that have cottages, only come on weekends and vacations. I live here year round.

chilihost
Actually I live in central Ontario, Canada.

Yeah, I am aware of some of the problems with satellites after having a dish for years. We don't get cable TV here either.

Linkster 2005-03-18 05:30 AM

tickler - just dont believe Direcways claims about upload speeds with the larger dish - I made that $1100 mistake and got slower uploads than using a modem - and if you want one of the large dishs and the router I have them for sale - I got conned by them back in June when they told me in order to get "256k" uploads you need the large dish.
They have revised their numbers to "up to 100k" - and refused to give me my money back so I stopped using them.

tickler 2005-03-18 05:53 AM

Linkster:
Actually the one that I was checking out was StarChoice. The hardware was about $1500 when they first came out and then dropped to about $1000 a month or so later later.

Also considering parking a PC a an office building a relative manages. They have a bunch of optical cable from a former tenant there that no one is using anymore. Then I can run a remote desktop, and have all the downloads/uploads run through that PC.

Another problem is with the time delay with the signal bounce. If you are doing online gaming, your duck command gets there a second after you already got shot.
