Damn Microsoft... again!

Last night my WinXP SP2 auto-updated itself with the latest security patches and shit (can you believe there're 3+ flaws found every damn month)... I had to reboot after the update completed and guess what happened - my mouse stopped working! Do you know who the manufacturer is? Yes, that's right - Microsoft...

I'm waiting for that day to have enough time to backup everything and switch back to the good old Win2k... damn XP! |angry|

I buy cheap used computers and put windows 98se on all of them and never have a problem... my buddy spent an assload on a new machine with XP and norton and all the shit that is supposed to keep you safe... a month after he bought it he got some scumware that he couldn't get rid of and had to reformat and start all over again.... if I ever break down and spend money on a good machine it will definitely be a MAC

Rocco 2005-04-14 07:12 AM

never had any problems with WinXp till now (knock on wood) and hope it will remain so. I also try to save all important docs on a external HD

Useless 2005-04-14 07:29 AM

I have had that damned balloon at the bottom of my screen telling me that updates are ready to be downloaded, but I haven't done it yet. I like to wait a couple of days to see how it goes for everyone else first. ;) The SP2 was bad enough. It kept shutting down my firewall and AV because it wanted to use its own.

pornrex 2005-04-14 07:38 AM

Wow!
I can't believe these horror stories! |shocking|

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, cuz so far, I haven't had any problems. (knocking on wood also!)

It's not Rocket Science or anything. Just followed the instructions and everything seems to be humming like a V8 now.

I feel slighted - I have no balloon nor any updates |cry|

Tart 2005-04-14 05:28 PM

the update just snuck on my laptop this am.. and I know I had it turned off. Seems there is some problem in the newest update that puts incorrect paths to certain dlls in the registry (or something similiarly over my head) and now half the time I can't click links.. everything freezes.

On the bright side I installed firefox until I get the chance to reformat and so far so good.. the links open. Might have converted me I'll have to see :) I'm gonna reformat and get rid of that update anyway tho just cause it's pissed me off.

Thumbler, clean your cookies, go dialup and submit another domain, like http://www.google.com/ for your free site URL. Also use another email than the one you're submitting with... Then, let me know if that worked for you...

LOL.... I turned on my "video" pc, a desktop Compaq, I haven’t had it on in 2 days at least so I am told I have a update, so I update and it tells me it didn’t update, so I reboot......

Locks up on reboot.....

That happen an hour ago… guess who is formatting now?

THANKFULLY, nothing at all was on this pc, everything has already been put on the server so I’m just losing time.

Torn Rose 2005-04-14 07:23 PM

BTW, my goal this year is to go MAC

Torn Rose 2005-04-14 08:06 PM

oy... this could be much worse then I thought....

First try at formatting didn’t work.... had 2 errors and then got the the "windows ME" screen and stopped...

Second try now...

We bought this thing a month before XP came out, so we had to do an upgrade, life would be so much better had I waited a month.... or got a MAC.

I had Windows Updates set at 'Notify Me'. I just turned it off completely. Screw them. This damned machine is working too well right now for me to go through that shit again.

RawAlex 2005-04-15 01:36 AM

clickbuster on laptops, there are often issues during software updates regarding external mice, especially if you have a pad mouse or point on the machine itself.

You all are real unlucky, I just don't see these issues.

I agree. i'm a network administrator and deal with 175+ pc's. xp has been by far more dependable and more stable than win98 or win2000 ever was. the second best thing we did after upgrading to xp was toss norton in the garbage. no more bluescreens, no computer lockups, no virus issues.
heck, now all i do is sit here at GG&J all day. :D

AcidMaX 2005-04-15 08:07 AM

mepis.org - who needs microsoft :)

Yep! That's the way to do it. :) I reckon the only reason you need a faster machine is to run XP and all the addons and takeoffs you need to make it work.

With 98SE you had control and could do a few a few things to make it rock solid. With XP, Microsoft and half of the sites on the net seem to take control, and all you can do is to keep plugging holes and repairing the damage.

Cleo 2005-04-15 10:09 AM

The problem with sicking to an older OS is sooner or later something comes out, hardware or software, that requires the latest greatest OS and here you are a bunch of versions older trying to play catchup.

Tried that - didn't make any difference unfortunately. Except that I now have a bunch of sites that I need to look up my logins for again :(

I can't submit anything because there is no submit form, the page comes up without it.

There is obviously some kind of 'if..then...else...' clause built into the page which is saying 'if everything is OK then display the submit form else display unavailable message' and for some unkown reason I am getting the 'else display unavailable message'

The only place I can see the actual submit form is in Google's cache which isn't a great deal of help really.

I have exactly the same problem at Wetplace - obviously the server is configured the same there. Or maybe it's the same server

Did you try using a different browser?

Yeah, I've tried with IE, Firefox and an old version of Netscape - same result with all of them. I've cleared cookies, cleared my cache and history, disabled Norton Internet Security, tried dial up instead of DSL, removed all my toolbars.....absolutely no fricking difference.

Thumbler 2005-04-15 10:57 AM

I forgot to say I've also tried with the other PC I have on this network, that came up with the same results too. I'm beginning to wonder if my IP is banned for some reason, although I can't imagine it would be!

Cleo 2005-04-15 10:59 AM

Are you behind a router that maybe is blocking your referral information or something?

dareutwo 2005-04-15 11:14 AM

I've had actually been considering a cough couch "fruit" .
It's not the price of the box I'm concerned about, it's the programs I'll need to repurchase.
Adding that up, it didn't make sense.
Kid #3 is due for a new computer this summer. (5 year old Dell) - He may be getting a Mac

?? - we're on a linksys router with dsl, can I simply plug in a mac to this like I can a win box?

Well I do have a router but I would have thought that when I used dialup it would have bypassed that, if you see what I mean.

I think I'll try shutting down absolutely everything and then not turning the network hardware back on and seeing if dialup will do the trick - I'll let you know :D

Cleo 2005-04-15 11:17 AM

Yeah I realized that you had tried a dialup after I had posted that and had then ran to the corner store. |banghead|

Does sound like your ISP is hated…

Doug E 2005-04-15 11:42 AM

i heard something about new security features in a recent XP or IE update and something to do with cookies and referrals not being tracked properly with some paysites. Anybody know more about this ?

No need to |banghead| - I'm in business |bananna| :D :D
I turned everything off, just switched the PC back on, used dialup, launched Firefox - and it worked.

Submitted a site, turned off, rebooted with everything switched back on, launched Firefox, went to the submit page expecting to see the old unavailable message but got the submit form.

It's all fine, it's as if I never had a problem. Just lost two days of my life trying to figure it out LOL.

Of course, after all this trouble the site is just bound to be declined |clown|

stuveltje 2005-04-15 06:11 PM

now all funny tell me do i need to download sp2 and end my life on the net???

Thumbler 2005-04-15 06:21 PM

I'm running sp2 and the only problem I've ever had is when an automatic update completely killed my DSL and network for a day
