Cleo, Sparky, Torn and other folks in Florida

The storm went right over ya'll. Give us a report about your safety as soon as you get power. Sure wishing you the best.

Simon 2005-08-26 06:33 AM

Went over them and it's now down here in the Keys.
Lost power, got it back, lost it and back again this morning.
We're under tornado watch right now with a big waterspout moving through the waters just south of here. Hopefully it will be past us soon.
Good wishes to those it passed already, hope you get your power back soon.

Simon

digifan 2005-08-26 07:12 AM

I'm worried too.. just read the news on Yahoo about the damages. :(

digifan 2005-08-26 07:13 AM

All these recent weather changes suck... both in the USA and in Europe... what this world is coming too?

Cleo 2005-08-26 07:27 AM

No power yet but I do have a generator and a one room A/C so I slept like a baby. :)

Lots of trees and branches down including one blocking my street, my driveway, and one on my roof that doesn't look like it damaged my roof so just lots of cleanup.

Fueled the generator this morning and I have enough fuel for another 48 hours. Going to go buy a chain saw today as soon as Home Depot opens so that I can remove the fallen branches and also see if I can refill my three empty 5 gallon gas cans.

Cable modem is down so I'm using my backup ADSL. Going to take down all my storm shutters after I drink my morning espresso and wake up.

I'm in good shape but most of my friends called me, like Angel, with no power and no storm supplies so they are all sitting in the dark hot, sweating, and bored.

I get generators wholesale, maybe we can sell them one ;)

Fonz 2005-08-26 07:39 AM

"CNN Breaking News" just emailed me to tell me that : The eye of Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near the Miami-Dade-Broward county line, the National Hurricane Center says.

If I'm not mistaken that's somewhere where Cleo is located?

Surfn 2005-08-26 07:46 AM

Good to know at least one of our Peeps has all their bits and pieces |boobies|

Cleo 2005-08-26 07:49 AM

The eye went right over where I live. I grew up down here but this is the first time that I've ever been in the eye of a hurricane. Oddly the storm turned south after it made landfall and hit Miami hard too.

This storm was much worse then anything we got where I live last year since we got a direct hit unlike last year's storms which hit north Florida. I'm really happy that I put up all my storm shutters yesterday. Looks like I was the only one on my block that did put them up.

What a difference having a generator and proper storm supplies make. :)

digifan 2005-08-26 07:59 AM

I just finished yesterday's thread and I am glad you are safe hon... be careful with that chain saw uh....

digifan 2005-08-26 08:00 AM

I hope everyone else is ok too... please let us know when you have net access.

Cleo 2005-08-26 08:05 AM

Just took a walk around my property. Looks like the worst thing that happened to me was having about 40 feet of old wooden fencing fall over. Went up on my roof and everything looks good and I didn't even loose any roof tiles.

Off to go take down my shutters…

Simon 2005-08-26 08:25 AM

We have all the downstairs shutters on and most of the upstairs ones.
I think we're getting what the mainland got yesterday (maybe a little less).
It's still blowing hard here and rain is pouring down.
Power's been out a dozen times since earlier post.

Coffee and thumbnails for breakfast.

(No, not mine, silly... wait, that doesn't really sound any better, does it? Okay... having coffee and making some custom thumbnails.... yeah, that's a little clearer).

Not quite wide awake yet but working on it. :)

Morning all, we are well north of this hurricane so no damage. It rained on/off a few times yesterday, but other then that no problems.... Hardly any wind.

Of course it looks like it's going to head north and then maybe across the state so who knows what will happen Sunday.

Surfn 2005-08-26 08:37 AM

More and more Peeps with all their bits and pieces |pink

Glad to hear you didn't get a lot of damage Cleo. I was watching it on the news last night it looked pretty bad. Glad your fine and so is your house... |thumb

cd34 2005-08-26 11:08 AM

Not much here other than some wind and rain, but then, I was a bit north of it. I haven't walked around the yard to see if there is any wind damage, but, I suspect other than a few broken branches, we escaped unscathed. Power blinked a few times last night, but, not long enough to reset any clocks.

Miami Herald has some decent reporting, but, requires that free registration that many people dislike.

MrYum 2005-08-26 11:43 PM

Yep, I was wondering how you faired Cleo...glad there was no significant damage.

We got very little effect up here on the gulf side. A bit of gusty wind...some rain...nothing big at all.

Just another day in paradise :)

Cleo 2005-08-27 08:20 AM

Still no power, but generator is doing great and slept in my nice and cool bedroom with my one room A/C. Home Depot was on generator power and was open so I bought a new leaf blower, electric one this time. A electric chain saw that attaches to a long pole and a gas powered chain saw. I wanted a larger gas powered chain saw but all they had left was 10" ones.

Down to less then 10 gallons of gas so after I spend some time trimming fallen branches I'm going gas hunting.

Still have phone service and backup ADSL. Hoping that real power gets restored before I loose phone and ADSL.

Simon 2005-08-27 10:33 AM

Yesterday we lost all power, cable, phone, dsl, you name it, even cell service has been out for the second day now. The wind and rain did not stop here all day and all night, finally clearing some this morning.

Making this post on battery power and an old dial-up aol account during now and then phone service, which is all that's come back at all yet. One of the trees fell yesterday too, hiting the roof of the boat house but looks like no damage. Lots of neighbors have trees down.

Going to be slow going here until services come back.

Apologies to those folks I lost in mid-IMs yesterday.

Cleo 2005-08-27 10:50 AM

After almost starting to take apart breaker boxes trying to figure out why half my bedroom had no power I finally decided to check the two breakers on the generator. Now I know that if one of them trip I only loose power to part of my house which makes perfect sense seeing as that would be one leg of the 220 circuit.

Got the electric chain saw that is on a pole stuck in the tree branch on the east side of my house that is laying partly on my roof. I would use the gas one but I don't want to be that close to it when it finally does break free from the couple of remaining inches that is holding it from crashing to the ground. Guess I need to go back to Home Depot and buy a come along or whatever that thing is called that has a cable and a crank so that I can wrap in around the branch and pull it down from a safe distance. Once I get it laying on the ground it shouldn't be too bad to cut up and put out with the rest of the yard derbies.

Got my front yard all cleaned up. Still have a not that big rubber tree on the east side that knocked over two sections of old fencing. Once I get the tree off it I'm going to see if I can just reuse the fencing or if I need to call someone to replace those sections.

It's getting hot out so I may wait until late this afternoon for more cleanup and I need to go gas hunting anyway.

I think it's time to relax for a bit in my nice and cool bedroom that has the A/C cranked up.

Guess I will not be needing to go to the gym for a week or so…

amber438 2005-08-27 10:54 AM

I'm glad you guys are all ok

cd34 2005-08-27 08:13 PM

And now its headed over to Linkster & Chop Smith's area.... Katrina is one nasty girl.

Cleo 2005-08-27 08:25 PM

Yeah it has turned into a major hurricane. Not looking good for New Orleans at all. :(

Power is back on. Tree branch is off my roof and is now a huge pile of tree pieces that I have to drag all around my house, through the gate, and out to the street.

Still have to start on the downed rubber tree that knocked down part of my fence. Hoping to have all the yard work down within three days.

I see that there is two more storms out there that may be headed our way.

Torn Rose 2005-08-27 08:29 PM

CNN had a story on what if New Orleans is hit by a Cat 4 and all I can say is

|hurricane GET OUT NOW!|hurricane

Cleo 2005-08-27 08:50 PM

This was the first time that Ft. Laud. ever got a direct hit and I think it will be true for New Orleans.

madleinx 2005-08-27 10:10 PM

No shit. |cry| I've lived here for 12 years, evacuated only once (which was a complete waste of time). Mr. madleinx has lived here all his life, don't think he's ever left. This one has me spooked...looks like it's coming straight to my house!

We will be leaving at 4 a.m. to go to my parents in northern AL. Hotels are supposedly booked as far north as Nashville, and I'm sure Houston is full too. Hope everyone else gets out okay and stays safe!

Just because Torn kept on asking for silly storm pics here you go,
Four silly after the storm pics.
http://terrizamore.com/a/hurricane2005/

They are coming tomorrow to setup getting my fence fixed. I'm removing all the foliage from on top of it today for them.

Torn Rose 2005-08-29 04:32 PM

sure put a lot of love posting these didnt you? :D

Cleo 2005-08-29 04:40 PM

I'm way too tired to show any love today.

Just got in from cutting up the rubber tree. I put all my yard tools away for the next fucking storm.

My legs are all scratched up. My arms are itching. I have a burn on my leg from the hot chain saw exhaust. I have muscles hurting that I didn't know I had. This fucking sucks but it feels good to be done.

Fuck I hope this is the last storm of this season!

We are also in Broward County, eye went over us too. Had a bunch of limbs down, two trees laid over and the direct tv dish damaged, but no structural damage. We were without power for 72 hours, just got mad cuz the other side of the street(across the street) had power 24 hours before we did. But all in all, everything is good.

Chop Smith 2005-08-29 10:42 PM

I am being powered by a generator. They are predicting that I will be without power for at least a week and possibly two. Anyway I survived. My ass hole was pinching button-holes in my chair so I did not get many pictures.

This is looking out my back door toward the lake. I was trying to get a shot of the sheets of rain. Have you ever seen a fifty acre pond whitecap?

http://choponthelake.com/katrina/sheets_of_rain.jpg

Not one, but two trees fell on my car. Not sure but kind of looks like I will need a new car and a new roof on the party room.

http://choponthelake.com/katrina/car_under_tree.jpg

Just a report and to say I am glad to be here tonight. Probably will not be able to get back into full swing for a week or so but I will be checking in.

I don't think Linkster got hit too bad in the Sex Delta. Hope he is safe as well as our friends along the Gulf Coast from Pensacola to New Orleans.

Cleo 2005-08-29 10:50 PM

Our local online newspaper has some really good reader submitted photos
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/wea...1.photogallery

This one is right by me but really there are so many down that it is hard to tell if this is the one I'm thinking of. I live off of Bayview drive and they have more pics from Bayview drive too.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/wea...llery?index=30

It's amazing seeing how high the roots become when they fall over.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/wea...allery?index=9

I'm just really glad that I don't live where it hit today. It was a strange storm forming so close to south Florida and then becoming so strong so fast.

Torn Rose 2005-08-29 10:55 PM

Good to see you post Chop, I was worried my cheesecake was in danger ;)

I tried calling Linkster about 6pm EDT and instantly got his voice mail so I assume his cell phone towers are down.

Cleo 2005-08-29 10:59 PM

Chop glad to hear that you are ok and have a generator. Hopefully your internet will last.

Hope Linkster and everyone else are ok with just a bad case of frazzled nerves.

docholly 2005-08-30 10:01 AM

Glad to hear you are surviving Chop. What a shot of the lake!! |shocking|

Anyone hear from Spiffy, Linkster, et al? :(

Torn Rose 2005-08-30 10:10 AM

still getting Linksters voice mail....
