is WordPress the best blog package to use?

I've made two or 3 blogs from wordpress, but cant say I am happy or satisfied that any of them have a look I am happy with.

I am looking for a blog package and themes that will give my sites something better in the graphics department. I am not that versed in PHP to make big adjustments or addons, but then again I aint that much better in my cgi tweeking either.

So I guess what I am asking is which blog making package out there - free or for sale - is worth the adult masters time (in the learning curve verses end result) ?

thanks in advance.

A blog software package often comes with default looks which defines the look of your blog. The standard looks of software like wordpress have been used by many people and will appear to become less "nice".
Switching between blog software won't help you, cause all blog software has standard blog looks.
I would advice to get in touch with a designer who can change your template in something really nice, great and unique. You will see when your blog looks unique you are much happier with it.
Or try changing the template your self, start small, a color change can already make your blog look much better.

I have been using Movable Type for a while now and really like it. though it took some tweaking, it works very well for me. I think Wordpress is so popular because it's free, but still seems like a pretty good blogging package.

What is it not doing? Or it's just the look you dont like? I believe movable has templates or styles, but I've never used them. Ive just edited the templates and css files.

Expression Engine from pmachine.com is pretty sweet. It has tons of mods, plugins, and features. It ain't cheap but it's damn good. The older pmachine is now free I believe and a scaled down version of EE.

Bblog uses smarty templates which makes it a breeze to design your own templates. Wrap your html around the smarty tags and your good to go. I use it so check out my site. They also have a package which makes any WP template compatible with Bblog.

Bblog doesn't have as many 3rd party plugins but form my 2c if you want something easy to customize...its a great choice.

thanks for the leads folks. I'll poke around and see which looks like the easier product to mod.

to answer on the specifics of what I didnt like about WP - it has SO MUCH information in the documentation but the links submenus and multi faqs have a newbie running in cirlcles. So much so that FINDING the simple HOW TO is a real ball breaker..............hence my desire to try a different blog product cuz my WP trials when the code didnt break looked like shit...........

Wordpress is only the application behind your blog. Design is all about graphix. You should contact me (ICQ : 34916475) if you want a new design you will be happy with :0)

Hey guestcam,

I use wordpress for my blogs, but have recently looked into a few other solutions. Some are more suited for multiple authors, some run ASP.NET as opposed to PHP. Perhaps I can help you find what you are looking for. As Walrus said, bBlog uses smarty templates, so that may be useful for getting your designs going. From what I understand of it, you just take a tag which is formatted like {somefunction} and insert it where you want it to happen. I don't know where a list of all the tags are, maybe walrus knows. I didn't look too deep into the documentation. But, as was said in other replies, you will have pretty much the same default skins in each blogging package, very vanilla stuff.

Since there is such a huge ammount of porn blogs running wordpress, and I haven't seen any good skins for porn, I'm going to be making some skins soon. It seems almost every porn blog I see is running the same 5 skins. I'm making a bunch of skins for wordpress that are specifically targeted for porn blogs. I'd like to show you a sample, but I'm still working bugs out. I want to have them work right out of the box for people with no problems. Eventually I'd like to try to port these to other platforms, which is why I did the research in mentioned in the previous paragraph. It may still be a month before I roll out the first few, but if you'd like any advice on skinning a wordpress blog, or finding your way around the WP documentation, feel free to PM me.

Here is the link to bBlog, by the way: http://www.bblog.com
And here's one similar to wordpress that looks pretty cool:
http://nucleuscms.org/ although they have very similar available skins.

thanks for the offer and the info. When you get your skins ready to use - either for bblog or WP let me know. Yeah the smarty tag method definately helps the HTML writer get the job done a bit easier - as oppose to the science of where in the php code am I gonna place my graphics and style codes? that ya need to know for WP mods. Unfortunately bblog - from what I am seeing linked to the home site - is really low on the plugin count.

anyhow - I am sort of working the blog project at half speed at the moment. I got blindsided with the task to find a new tgp host for one of my domains, so I've been researching that for a bit. Not like I had any thing else to do in the second half of December huh?|banghead|

Well I hear the drier buzzer buzzing - time to go do the white clothes now|bananna|

Bblog is lite in the plug-in area....but it seems to do almost everything I want plus I've been able to do things that you simply can not with Wordpress or the others (I am making an assumption since I've never tried with any of them but I've also never seen anyone else doing what I am)

My biggest complaint is that they really don't have a good way to handle spam....yet. The next release is supposed to have it and a bunch more stuff and last I checked it's due in a few weeks. In the mean time, I have installed a simple word filter hack that has made the problem more than tolerable.

Dude - don't acknowledge a spammer unless you are going to call him a cocksucker.

I am very partial to Drupal. While it does allow you to have a blog, you can do much more with it. It's open source and if you are kinda techish, it's a breeze to install. If you aren't techish, find someone who owes you a favor. =D

I just love wordpress, but i have to say that the best thing was when i started using Mambo. Also Joomla. You can have a blog look in this cms software. There are so many designs out there that you could easily use this cms and have a blog look with little or no fuss with a little change in the headers you can make it your own to suit your needs.
Wordpress rocks indeed, but Mambo - that rocks in seo dept and i get way more search engine hits using Mambo. if you want to check out my site its in my sig. my newest using Joomla (havent even started a real link trade with it yet its so new) http://www.thenudebabes.com/main
Maybe it's just a glitch (the search engine traffic).. maybe im spending more time on SEO than i did on my wordpress blogs some of those are super text heavy, but which ever it is, something is working differently, thought i would share :)

walrus 2006-01-02 10:59 PM

Im playing around with mambo and so far, I like it's functionality but either I'm just very lucky or they need to check their downloads area better but the template I found that was closest to something I like definately wasn't cross browser compatible and it only took me a week of cursing, yelling, drinking and god only can remember what else to finally make it that way.

Of course, had I thought to check before I started editing the shit out of it....it may have taken a little less time.

Talley,

Grey Matter....I have installed it and used it. For an adult webmaster.... it is not suitable. Go back to the link list threads. Your funny there!

GuestCam,
Search in google for wordpress themes. There are lot of free wordpress themes for free. You only need to upload the full folder into your wp-admin/theme folder. After that login to your wordpress admin and choose the theme (click on presentation from main menu)
