Mac or PC?

The age old question :)

The last couple of weeks my laptop has been acting up so it might be time to replace it. My first thought was to just replace with a PC laptop, but came to think of Mac. Why would I want to get a Mac instead of a PC? Is there any good reasons? :)

cd34 2006-02-11 01:49 PM

I run linux on my laptop. The only program that I need that runs on windows is quickbooks. There is a quickbooks version that runs on mac, and, rumors that Wine will run on the Intel mac's as well.

As far as a machine goes, the mac is pretty darn well integrated. Its interface is well thought out and the machine is really laid out well. And, Mac OS/X is bsd unix. So, you can do all the stuff you would do on your webserver on the laptop in a development platform. That's the only reason I run linux on my laptop -- to have a development platform at my fingertips without having to have a spare machine sitting at the house to develop on.

With Mac, you get no viruses, etc and their interface takes a little bit to get used to, but, wouldn't take you long to get accustomed to.

When I replace this laptop, I am giving serious thought to replacing it with an Intel mac laptop. It is similar enough to the unix/linux webservers that there are few conversion woes when moving from mac os/x to linux or freebsd. Developing on windows to port to linux/freebsd would be a nightmare. :)

I didn't think of the development part, that's a huge benefit |thumb

It's so sleek looking too http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

I think all my competition should use Windows.

If you run Adobe stuff you my want to get a G4 Powerbook since Adobe is saying it will not be until late this year that their stuff is ported over.
http://www.apple.com/powerbook/
I have the older version of the 17" and love it. When I'm home I plugin a mouse, keyboard, and a 23" display for a two monitor setup plus a couple of FireWire drives for plenty of storage.

Close the lid and it goes to sleep. Open the lid and you are ready to pickup where you left off within a few seconds. I never shut down my computer and it has been over a month since my last restart since the only time I restart is if Apple releases an update that requires it.

I have spent zero time in the last year doing any kind of maintenance and it has been years since I've had a crash that took my system down.

Mac multitask really well and I just leave everything open and switch around.

MeatPounder 2006-02-11 03:34 PM

I think we will be finding many more exploits directed at Macs with the move to intel processors

Cleo 2006-02-11 03:37 PM

Only if for some insane reason you load Windows on it and then boot into Windows.

Intel Macs are still Macs still Running Mac X.

swedguy 2006-02-11 04:11 PM

How much memory do you have in your Powerbook?

Cleo 2006-02-11 04:19 PM

One gig. It has two slots and can hold 2 gigs but I really don't feel a need to add more.

I also have two other user accounts that I leave open all the time. A non admin Guest account for when my friends want to use my Mac and a Testing account that I keep set to factory defaults.

My laptop is the original 17 Powerbook. The newer ones are a lot faster but I've never really felt the need to upgrade.

Here I ran Top and took a screen grab.

Also Macs have a few features not found on other OSs.

Things like Labels that can be used to label files without renaming them or moving them. Very useful for keeping track of what I'm working on, what has been submitted, what is a template, etc.

Also Column view has to be one of the best file manager that I've ever used.

Screen shot showing that I have two folders marked with Labels letting me know that they are my active jobs.

You can set the labels to say anything you want.

Then you right mouse click on any folder or file to set its label.

swedguy 2006-02-11 05:07 PM

hmmm, lots of interesting features. I looked at the comparison between the PowerPC processor and the Intel and the Intel was quite a lot faster.
But one problem is that it could take a while before all software is ported to the Intel. And if the PowerPC is fast enough for you, it should definitely be enough for me :)

$2,299 for a 15" PowerBook G4 with 1GB ram and a 7200rpm harddrive. It's pretty much the same price as a decent PC.

swedguy 2006-02-11 05:12 PM

My bad about the PowerPC->Intel porting. Rosetta seems to take care of that.

Cleo 2006-02-11 05:18 PM

That is a fine laptop, way faster then what I'm using actually. Has all the features that my 17" Powerbook has like dual monitor support and a PC card slot. The keyboard lights up which is really sweet for using in the dark.

This is where I buy much of my stuff from. Not sure if non US people can buy through them or not.

Another good reason to go with the older G4 Powerbook is it is a refined mature design that has had the bugs worked out.

Lots of good info about what is working and what isn't with the Intel Macs.

They have some pretty good deals on add-ons. It's bookmarked :)

I love the cinema displays... they're dead sexy :D

I'm glad to see this isn't a flaming post :)

Cleo 2006-02-11 07:39 PM

This is another good Mac place to buy.

And for add ons.

For finding Mac software updates and software.

Macs run much of the Unix and Open Source software.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/
Fink Commander gives you easy access to obtaining it and installing it.

Gimp runs very nicely under Mac X. If I didn't already know and use Photoshop/ImageReady I would consider using Gimp. It has some really kewl filters and effects.

You can also download it as a clickable Mac application.

I've got tons of Mac links. :D

There's enough of that in the other threads ;)

If I decide to go with the Mac, I'll hit you up Cleo so we can trade some bookmarks ;)

My avatar was created with Gimp on linux -- a powerful demonstration of its capabilities.

Cleo 2006-02-12 12:41 AM

You should submit how to make an avatar to the Gimp tutorial site.
http://gug.sunsite.dk/?page=tutorials

Even someone that thinks ImageMagick is user friendly can use Gimp to create an avatar.
|couch|

Some kewl work that I found while looking for the Gimp tutorial page. It is said that this stuff was done using Gimp.

I don't know how relevant it is for what you're looking for, but macs don't have the bottlenecks that PC's have when it comes to processing graphics. The Mac hardware is designed to work with higher resolutions/bit-rate graphics - very helpful if you're doing any work with video's, or doing any kind of graphic manipulation. |thumb

There's also the color. I don't know what it is, but I've never worked on a PC that was as color accurate, or as vivid as the Mac's I've worked on.

Plus, having a Mac just makes you cooler. |loony|

digifan 2006-02-12 04:20 AM

I'm cool then having a Mac mini :D

DJilla 2006-02-12 05:44 AM

"Apple, hmmm, didn't they used to make computers"? (tee he)

The above was an overheard conversation between two people at the bus stop on the corner of Hines & Wilshire Ave in the year 2009.

I think iPod has done a LOT for Apple and their computers. I believe they will sell more and more in the future.

They've very clearly identified exactly who their products are for, and have done very well to create a sense of culture surrounding the Apple mystique.

I always thought it would be cool to have a resistive mouse.

Dragging a large document to the trash can would be harder than dragging a short document.

That and an optimizing keyboard. It would analyze your typing patterns and put a small message on the screen that it has changed the key positions of frequently used keys to the home row and shuffled the less useful keys to the edge. With today's LCD technology, switching keyboard layouts could be done quite well. Might play havoc with typing speed though.

Cleo 2006-02-14 09:59 AM

So while doing porn if the content was hot then the mouse would get all wet I guess.

BTW the one thing I've always really hated about Windows was the way a mouse tracks lacking acceleration when the mouse is moved faster and becoming more precise when the mouse is moved slower.

swedguy 2006-02-14 10:14 AM

I just got back from the Apple store and the first thing I noticed when I was playing around on the PowerBook was the slow moving mouse :)

The 17" is HUGE. Really nice if you are going to work a lot on it and use it as your primary monitor. But the 15" with an external monitor feels like a better combination for me.
I'm impressed how skinny and light it was.

I saw a link to http://www.ellenfeiss.net/ on of the sites and the people there are hilarious. The comments to "Ellen in Paris" is true stalker material LOL http://www.ellenfeiss.net/?p=4

swedguy 2006-02-14 10:27 AM

I had forgot about the Ellen Feiss commercial. I think that has to be one of the few that has made me laugh.

Apple Menu --> System Preferences --> Keyboard and Mouse to adjust the tracking speed of the Track Pad and the mouse.

I'm a big fan of Kensington mice and use their Iridio mouse. They have a control panel where you can modify the acceleration plus a bunch of other settings.

swedguy 2006-02-14 10:51 AM

That was one of the things I made sure I could use on the Mac, my mouse.
I love my Microsoft Trackball Optical.

cd34 2006-02-14 11:01 AM

you guys and all your external not-built in pointing devices.

Alps trackpad is the tool to have. :)

swedguy 2006-02-14 11:24 AM

Darn! Just talked to Apple and they can't change the keyboard on a PowerBook. I was hoping that I could buy it in the US (would save me a lot of $$) and then get a new keyboard here. Guess I could get an external Swedish keyboard, but that would still leave me with a US keyboard on the PowerBook when I'm out and about.

swedguy 2006-02-15 09:48 PM

I thought Apple were really strict on who could sell their computers and for how much?

http://www.electrodiscounts.com/computer/discr26520.htm
PowerBook G4 PowerPC G4 1.67 GHz 15.2 TFT 512 80 DVD-RW Modem/NIC/Wi-Fi Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (M9969LL/A)
$1684

That's really cheap if you compare to Mac Mall, Club Mac and Apple Store. I can't find a catch either. Am I missing something?

Cleo 2006-02-15 10:12 PM

It is probably grey market.

The Powerbook that I have was bought on the grey market as has been a lot of the photo gear that I've bought over the years.

Usually not a problem unless you need warranty work on something. Apple may or may not give you free warranty work if something should happen to it.

On a side not I bought the 4 gig iPod nano today while I was with Angel helping her buy a cheap PC to run the voyeur cams she is putting in. I wanted a white one but all they had in stock was the black ones. I also got a pink arm band for it. Can't wait to use it at the gym tomorrow. No more having my big old 40 gig iPod on my arm. That iPod is now going to be just left hooked up to my car's music system.

swedguy 2006-02-15 10:41 PM

Ahhh, I see. So I might have a problem getting the 3 year extended warranty on it?

Nice little Nano :)
How are those Koss plugs?
My weird ears doesn't like the standard plugs :(

Cleo 2006-02-15 10:51 PM

IMO the buds that come with iPods are crap.

Koss ones are great and at less the $20 I don't get upset if I get them caught on something and break a pair.

Read what other users say about them
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8

Actually I always bought these Koss buds but last time the above ones was what was in stock. They both seem to sound the same.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8

No idea really about if you might have warranty issues with that Powerbook but at that price I would risk it.

swedguy 2006-02-15 11:12 PM

That's a great price and the store around the corner has them in stock. I'll pick up a pair tomorrow. Thanks |thumb

I emailed them about the warranty, lets see what they say about it. If there's no problems, I will definitely order one and pick it up when I get to Vegas.
I was thinking of upgrading the harddrive to 7200rpm, but I can live with a 5400 rpm if I can get the whole thing for that cheap.
Most places wanted over $100 to upgrade the memory to 1GB, but Mac Sales is selling 1GB memory modules for the same price. So for around $1850 I will get a nice little PowerBook with 1.5GB memory :)
