What do you pay for hosting?

Well, I'm back already. Two threads for this newbie, hope that's alright. You might know my other thread about having money and starting a biz.

Anyway, I have an opportunity to start a webhosting business. I wouldn't be doing it alone, at least until I get it going and know what I'm doing. I'll be doing it with someone that's been in the industry for years and is successful.

So to make sure I'm not going to be told to set a price so high that I work overtime just to get customers, I'd like to know what some site owners pay. Since adult webmasters will be a customer base, I figured this would be a good place to get some input.

So what do you pay and for what specs?

Thanks

I'm using Colo-cations virtual hosting, and will probably need to upgrade to dedicated if traffic keeps improving. You can go to their website http://colo-cation.com/ and see what they charge.

It's very competitive...do a search on hosting and you will see what I mean. Best of luck, though..reliable, competitive and competent hosting done right is siomething that will always be needed in this business.

9.95$/month for enough bw and enough domains and enough sql databases

bart666 2008-03-17 01:15 PM

Hi Ptime,

I've been doing a lot of research on hosting and subscribed to www.exmasters.com for an dedicated server. They have very low prices on bandwidth, even for virtual accounts. Check their prices.

When shopping for hosting, don't base your decision on price alone. The cheapest option is usually NOT the best value. Oversold, slow servers and networks will costs you more money than you save. Slow support response, etc. can also cost you money.

Buy the best hosting that you can afford, in the long run it will pay for itself.

Now, to answer the original question. I pay $300/mo. for my managed dedicated server.

I have AWESOME service at Phatservers, have been with them for years. I have a managed dedicated box with 10mps uncapped + daily backups for 416/month. 2GB Ram, 11 ip addresses, unlimited email, domains, and user accounts. Not sure on the processor speed/HD's ect.

They have excellent tech support, and their Direct Admin panel is great for adding in users and domains since I do host alot of non-adult sites for a client. :D

Their tech support is the number one reason I'm with them because they have always responded very quickly to any problems, so if you are thinking of getting into hosting, make sure you have 24/7 response most adult webmasters are going to want that.

Hiya Ptime |waves|

I know you're not looking for hosting for yourself, but asking because you're thinking about getting involved in a business that may be providing hosting services to adult webmasters.

Unfortunately you may be going down another bad road with this one.

You mentioned having the "opportunity to start a webhosting business" and the point I'd want to make to you is that there is absolutely no shortage whatsoever in available hosting providers, and there is very little demand for *new* web hosts. Most adult webmasters prefer to use one of the well-known, proven reliable hosting companies. Particularly after being burned a time or two by some new host which lured customers with low prices and big promises.

What successful adult webmasters need is a hosting company which knows *more* about hosting than they do. We need hosting run by people who understand exactly what we're talking about and why we need what we need. It's important for a host to have a staff which knows the languages we use to build our sites and understands the interaction of the various scripts we install.

And then there are the needed and almost constant upgrades to installed scripts, and updates to programming languages and to server software, and how those things may conflict to bring down some customers' websites. Plus the non-stop attacks by hackers and 'script kiddies' who hammer on hosting boxes looking for the smallest mistake in a configuration that will allow them to gain control of a box and use it for their own nefarious purposes.

If you have no background in being an adult webmaster, or even a successful mainstream webmaster, and aren't trained in the technical aspects related to hosting, or didn't grow up trying to hack into every network you ran into, then bringing only money to the table will not give you any competitive advantage to capitalize on. And if you're still working with the amount of cash you mentioned in your other thread, then you won't be capitalized well-enough to compete and win.

Nice to see you're still looking for a way in. But if you want to put your money to work without knowing the ins and outs of the business first, I'd really advise you to look at something besides providing hosting as your business model. (Unless of course you're buying in to an existing operation where you'd have an incredibly talented and knowledgeable partner and a first-rate support staff -- but I haven't heard of any of those looking for partners/investors, and there are only a very few that meet that criteria).

Good luck in your search for a new business.

Simon

Prices for Hosting vary per company. The prices Ive seen start at $5-10 for shared hosting to $200 for dedicated..and can run much more..it all depends on what your needs are and what your budet can handle. Lowest is not always worst and highest is not always best.

Thanks guys.

I use godaddy for my sites that require bandwith and ATCI for sites that require support and quick response time on the server.

LeRoy 2008-03-25 11:48 AM

I use Colo 300.00 dedicated server plan. Thats where you go. The service is unbeatable. I'm so happy :)

On another project. I bought some static IP's from ATT and a Dell Power Edge server for 650.00. That's being configured right now by Gary the tech. I have my solo girl sites loading to that server for web cam. I needed root access for some scripts. So We built our own. Maybe we'll cut down on some bandwidth fees. The IP's are an extra 40.00 on my phone bill.

i pay anywhere from $6-$10 for a virtual account, i have a bunch of them across a lot of different hosts.. that way my whole business isn't crippled if a host has some downtime.

$12.95 a month on Hostgator. It's the largest of their shared hosting plans.

Did everything work smoothly with them? Do you have any scripts installed? I hear they're shutting down accounts like crazy and trying to force people to upgradet to (semi)dedicated and the reason seems to be their scripts take too many resources...

The only things I have installed are WordPress (and some WP plugins) and an adserver. Both of which are installed by Hostgator via Fantastico in cPanel.

I've only had one instance of downtime in 15 months with them. And that was for like 10 minutes.

Sounds good...
Another question... how much BW do you actually born? They advertise a lot, do they actually give it to you?

I've not paid for any overages yet (knocks on wood...). My transfer is pretty light compared to what the typical adult webmaster is going to need. Though, I do serve some photos and video. I'm in a small (but growing, damnit!) niche.

JohnnyR 2008-04-09 05:41 PM

Ok thank you for the info... "hotwives" :) BTW I took a look at your site - good stuff!
I was wondering whether they come up with excuses to kill your virtual account once you start burning BW like crazy... which they almost always do... the "better" the offer, the faster they freeze accounts...

I remember looking at GoDaddy for hosting, but they have a no-porn clause in their usage agreement... Is something like that generally not enforced? Is it really that important to find a porn-friendly hoster?

What good are the resources it the business plan of the host is to force you to move up or out. Read the horror sorries of those of us who tried main-stream hosts only to have to move at the most inconvenient time.

Get a good adult host to start with - you won't regret it.

And who said that there aren't adult hosts wit the same resources as mainstream. Look at the % of BW that adult industry uses and it becomes immediately clear that some of the biggest providers are adult.

We just went through a forced move off a mainstream hosting company that I have used for years - but their policy of forcing server upgrades when BW increases does not work with my business model.

NY Jester 2008-04-26 08:57 PM

Mr HappyFace - just as Papa has stated..its not fun to HAVE to move. Its best to start with what you need - menaing an adult friendly hots..there is plenty of them out there from $10 per month for a virtual shared hosting plan all the way up to sveral hundred dollars for managed and unmanaged dedicated servers. Do your homework, dont try and cut corners with non-adult hosting..if they dont catch you right away..they will and youll be forced to find another.
