Unauthorized Links to your pics

Better check out this site for links to your pics. Just noticed that
on one sight, I have had pics pulled from a site intro over 24,000 times. Does me no good and uses bandwidth. Unfortunately I would have to check 100's more to find out the real extent of his intrusion

Is there nothing that can be done with this guy

http://ripper.webrats.com/

Anyone using him as an affiliate should stop immediately and he might not have a purpose to continue Brian

thrillho 2004-08-13 03:00 PM

Are you using htaccess to protect your pics from hotlinking? That's the best way to deal with people stealing your bandwidth/images.

novices 2004-08-13 05:05 PM

Thanks for the suggestion, but they are linking small size pics incorp in the site introductions and free sites. No real way to protect without cutting off legitimate surfers Brian

I don't see why you could'nt use .htaccess to protect your pics. Your explanation makes no sense to me. Legitimate surfers are viewing the images on your pages. Unless you screw up, .htaccess will not block the images from appearing on your own site. That's how we all do it.

Don't take me wrong please but I don't find your reply helpful at all.. even the nick novices suggest that he/she is new.

What can we do?

How is my reply not useful? He said htaccess wouldn't help. I informed him that it would. If he bothers to ask how, I'd be more than willing to give him a copy of my .htaccess.

Based on your attitude and comments I wouldn't "bother asking" you anything. There is no excuse for bad manners.

Thank you digifan for your very informative and helpful comments

I think you are wrong.. Useless Warrior has an excellent sense of humor which maybe does not go through for eveyrone... but he makes me laugh often and I am thankful :)

Yes you informed him and I am sorry if I offended you in any way... I am dealing with newbies more often then you maybe and I know posting links may be useful for them to start with and learn more, that's all... giving them a copy of your own htaccess file could be priceless :)

hotlinkers make me money :-)
Ya gotta love'em

cherrylula 2004-08-15 11:11 AM

I hate it when surfers try to hotlink you and it doesn't work. But it still shows up in your referrers.

And I can't stand those forums that webmasters run and allow this to go on. |skull|

Novices, eventhough you have read something into my post, that I don't beleive exists, and have somewhat insulted me as a result, I'll throw my htaccess out at you. My inititial post was an attempt to reinforce what Thrillho had stated about htaccess protecting your images.
Don't forget to change 'yourdomain' to your domain.

You might want your redirect to display an image, which you can make as a banner with the url of your site on. Get a few type ins that way, and with sites like fusker you get a nice page with your banner all the way down it :)

On the htaccess subject.

Anybody got a sample on how to unprotect a sample pic directory.
Some site require hotlinking thumb samples.

I already have a global htaccess against hotlinking at the domain level.

That's a bad way to do it, IMHO. I have ONE folder I use for all my images on each domain and protect that one folder against hotlinking. This leaves the rest of the domain safe for hotlinking. It's also better organization, I feel.

I'm like you, one htaccess at the root of my domains.

Put a htaccess file in the directory that you wish to allow hotlinking and put this in the file.

RewriteEngine off
