The Official Pizza Thread

As you see from my location, I am in Apizza country. What Connecticut Pizza sountry you say? Damn right! I just wanted to start a thread about pizza, and your favorite pizza places. I noticed that when discussing pizza that people tend to be very devoted to their type/style of pizza. I think that's great.
In New Haven (which was called pizza's holy city by Calvin Trillan) we have some of the best pizza on earth! The link above leads to my all time favorite Apizza restaurant, Pepe's which is an experince. Anyone been there, or to any of the other places in New Haven? Let's hear about it!

Most of the take out places up here in Buffalo have very good pizza, but http://www.bellapizza.com/ has always been my favorite.

Maybe it's bcause I lived next door to them for 2 years when I was 22 & drinking a lot :D

thrillho 2004-08-27 09:39 AM

I lived in Chicago for a year, and Geno's East had incredible pizza. In Los Angeles, there was a pizza place in the valley called Joe Peep's that was really good, too.

finnbear 2004-08-27 10:59 AM

I don't post any pizza places - you know why - but my favourite is one with ham, salami, shrimps and gorgonzola. It's called Fantasia here.

We have Pizza Hut, but we don't usually go there, we have our own favourite places or we order to home.

I have two favorites. Brooklyn Pizza is by far the best in the little city I live in. But I hate the arrogant slicked-hair fuctards who run place. They do hire some of the hottest Asian babes to run the counter, so the can't be all bad.
There's a place called Monument Pizza in Schuylerville, about 30 minutes from here. If you're looking for a big 24 cut with loads of toppings, that is the place to go. I've never had a bad or even so-so pizza from there. No hot Asian babes though. Just some guy in his forties missing a couple of teeth.

One of the best things about Buffalo is that you can always get good pizza and wings delivered cheap and pretty fast. The pizza is good there.

Pizza is one of the world's most perfect foods. Vegans to meat eaters - even the most finicky eaters can find a pizza that they like.

The pizza I've ever had was from My Best Friend's Place in Gaithersburg, MD. Never been there but I came from a 5 week business trip and a delivery menu was on my door. Best crust and enough toppings to go around :)

There is also Upside Down Pizza in a town just north of Sydney.

Any place in Brasil seemed to server great pizza and there was always olive oil and fresh ground pepper to add.

Pizza is just a perfect food. This is a good topic :)

Buffalo has the worst pizza I have tasted. They use little pepperoni like frozen pizzas. Now, if you want real pizza...come to my house :)

MrMaryLou 2004-08-27 07:38 PM

Pizza in Buffalo rocks for sure some on the best I have ever had :)

ReyRey 2004-08-27 09:25 PM

I used to live in Chicago and I have to say that I think that their pizza is the best I have ever tasted...I love deep dish. I used to live by little Italy so all I ever ate was Italian food. I loved it I love Cannois.sorry I got off topic...lol. Chicago Pizza to me is the best

That's cool. Pizza is the perfect food. It even crosses over into the art world as far as I am concerned! It's simplicity and purity make it something that anyone can appreciate. Never did have any pizza in Chi Town, but they have some kick ass mexican food!

Gonna have to disagree with you on that last part--if you think the mexican food in Chicago is good, then you must have found a place I never did. Every mexican food place I tried in Chicago was to that cuisine as a frozen cardboard pizza from 7-11 is to a fully loaded Chicago deep dish. But then, I grew up in Texas, so I was spoiled with good mexican food all over the place.

This is a really good opportunity to talk about mexican food. See I have never had mexican in Texas that was anything I have had in Los Angeles or New Mexico, Kansas or Chicago for that matter. Each area has a certain style of food. To say you haven't found anything like you've had in Texas is understandable, but there is definatly kick ass Mexican there. A general rule of thumb for me is, if you can find chicharonnes you are sure to be able to find some kick ass food somewhere!

plateman 2004-08-29 08:36 PM

Being an Itailan its hard to please me with a pizza thats really good - they used to make some good pizzas at a place called pizza oven but over the years quality went down hill, but is still a few decent places around here..

Tommy 2004-08-29 08:49 PM

Growing up in NYC, I used to be NYCentric also ;) However, I busted enough NYC'ers cherries at Pepe's who admitted that though NY has great pizza, there's nothing that beats Pepe's. They says John's is close. However having said that Tommy, nothing is better than handcut full fat corned beef sandwich from Katz's.

ReyRey 2004-08-30 12:07 AM

Hey Tommy I know that everyone from NYC I have know says that New Pizza is best....and everyone from Chicago says that Chicago style deep dish is best.........I can say what I think about New York pizza since I never tasted it........but I do love Chicago pizza. I love that deep dish pizza.

BTW NY pizza is thin crust....right? with huge slices that you gotta fold to eat? is this right?

Yo Tommy is ther anyway to get some NY pizza over to Texas........i mean is there any type of delivery service? I just want to taste it. I know alot of other NY restaurants delivery and you can order through the net.

Hey thrillho I completely agree with you...I live in South Texas and the mexican food here cant compare to up north........besides Im Latino myself so I know what good mexican food is.

I dont know why a lot of people actually think taco bell is authentic mexican food. I have heard a lot of people say this and its hard to get them to change their mind without cooking some homemade stuff for them or take them to authentic mexican restaurants.

ReyRey

GunnCat 2004-08-30 12:29 AM

ReyRey in Mexico City there is a Taco Bell. Now I don't know, but rumour has it that Mexico City has some mexican food. Now how does Taco Bell compete with all the restaurants in Mexico City? They serve some interesting very good food.
Now just because your latino doesn't make you an authority on mexican food. I'm not mexican, but I can gaurantee that I can take you to places that will make you say dayum! Personally I have had mexican food in Texas back in the 90's before I knew much about it, and I wasn't impressed at all. I thought the food was greasy and lousy. I had come from Los Angeles which arguable has some of the best Mexican food on earth, and I was looking for things like tacos al carbon or just radishes, not to be found! However with hindsight I can say what I had was damn good, just different than what I was "used too".
New York has some great pizza, it's hard to get a bad slice. However overall, the pizza in New Haven is the best I have ever eaten on earth. I used to live in Italy so I am familiar with what they have there, and New Haven is more appealing to the american pallette. For example, there is nothing in Italy named Pepperoni, though I have seen sliced hot dogs of all things on top of the pies there.
Tommy, if you wanna come to New Haven I'll take you to Pepe's :)
You'll really enjoy yourself. Man, their clam pie is the best, I like it with bacon. Check this out. Beautiful crust, the perfect crust, garlic, a bit of oregano, chunks of garlic, fresh shucked cherrystones all baked with coal. Damn :D
Btw, the "thin crust" pizza you are referring to is called Napoliatana, "from Naples". Chicago makes pizza that is more or a foccia than a true pizza according to how italians would rate it.

thrillho 2004-08-30 09:42 AM

I agree that Taco Bell is not truly mexican food, but it does kick ass when you've got a killer hangover!

HarryM 2004-08-30 10:41 AM

I found the best ones in a cafe in Rome, pretty simple with just 1 or 2 things on it, they don't over do it there, pizza isn't meant to have your whole house on it covered in cheese.

Tommy 2004-08-30 11:53 AM

GunnCat

I was up in mystic the other day for the art show

Yes Katz's deli is the all time best.
Best food of my life. When I fixed elevators I use to eat there all the time but I havent had the pleasure for a few months

I know all you guys are thinking well this place is great or that place makes good ....

nothing is like katz's deli

ReyRey: yes. our pizza has thin crust with huge slices that you gotta fold to eat

or we have sicilian which is big and square and thick
its a little doey inside, Its hard to explain. Buts its VERY good

when I travel I am always shocked at what passes for good pizza and coffee

Torn Rose 2004-08-30 12:17 PM

Best I've had is in Naples, Italy.

I agree with HarryMuff, the small cafe's off the beaten path in Italy are totaly kickass.

pornrex 2004-08-30 01:45 PM

I've been to a few places around the world when it comes to pizza and I'd have to say that Italy was very disappointing, borderline disgusting!

Here's Pornrex's Top 5 cities for pizza:

1. New York
2. Chicago
3. Boston
4. Buffalo
5. Sydney - believe it or not!

:)

GunnCat 2004-08-30 02:35 PM

Tommy, if you are coming up anytime soon let me know. Katz's mmmmmmm! I need to get down there sometime soon. I used to go there when I was buying food in the city for customers out this way. Can't explain the magical feeling of biting into one of their sandwiches. You just have to experience it.
Pornrex, I can understand that! In fact the best pizza (other than Pepe's) I have ever eaten was in the South of France.
Torn, yah man Naples. Haven't had the pleasure yet, but it's on my list to do. The pizza out of NH is the same style.
