Thumbs Wrapped around Ads???

At the risk of sounding stupid, can someone clarify what that means? I saw Cleo mention it in another thread, then I went to a couple of rules pages for other LL's and saw the same thing.

Do I do it in this gallery with the center ad I made?

http://www.dommedesires.com/gal103/gal103nr.htm

I wanted to check, because I had planned to adapt that gallery into a gallery for my next free site.

And if it isn't too much trouble, can someone explain why that seems to be so universally frowned upon? I can understand most of the general no-no's, but this one threw me for a loop.

Thanks much!

That link comes close. thumbs on all four sides is wrapping the ad. Some dis like it for many reasons. One of the most common is it breaks up the continuity or flow of the page. Others consider it akin to a blind link because the surfers are clicking into the gallery expecting pix. HTH

I don't care about thumbs being wrapped around ads, so you'd be safe with me :)

Selena, I think with the trend toward using larger banners you will see this rule relaxed some bit.

Besides, you can't satisfy them all. They will tell you to use seaveral templates. Think about it, if you do not wrap, what are the possible combinations of arranging thumbs:

Two rows with 5 five thumbs
Five rows with 2 thumbs
Ten rows with 1 thumb

I do decline for wrapping your thumbs around your ad, but that gallery is fine with me. :)

The rule is more for when you see the thumbs only around the edge of the page with a big ad in the middle.

Well with me some rules are relaxed - now if the thumbs were small and the banner big, Then I would reject..I've seen thumbs wraped 360 around a odd sized banner and it looked bad and I've see other pages that looked good..

MadMax 2004-09-14 09:59 AM

You've got nice big thumbs on that page, and the ad is obviously an ad so there's no chance of someone blindly clicking on it and expecting a full sized pic. The page looks good, and I'd be happy to list a site with that gallery page layout.

looks fine to me...

In the past some people would build galleries from with free content from, say, ham-a-tuer pages and put one of their totally blind link square banners that have just a picture of the model. I am sure the click rate is high - and I am sure the number of back button clicks is eually as high. Combine that with agressive mousetrapping, consoles, and back button manipulation techniques, and you have a pissed off surfer, pissed off at the link site or TGP that sent them there to start with.

The gallery example you give is fine - it is really clear what is content and what is ad.

I've never used such a layout, but why would that bother you if it's an obvious advertisement and not like a tricky image to appear part of the gallery?

Cleo 2004-09-14 07:04 PM

Because my surfers come to look at sample pics not ads so the sample pics should be the center of attention.

Hopefully they will like what they see and the ad will get their attention. :)

Thanks good peoples, for all your input. Sometimes it's hard for this noob to know what is what. Especially when I run into things like this, when it doesn't seem to be an exact across-the-board kinda thing.

Cleo, I appreciate you taking the time to make a clear example for me. :)

Y'all rock. ~firm nod~

And how about "enter" inscription on the banner? I try to avoid such banners but it was drilling me since ever - is it unwelcome only at index page or main and gallery pages as well ?

I actually like that style, lol... it's a nice change from the standard galleries that all look the same.

As long as the ad doesnt look like a pic I dont see what the problem would be?
