I've never seen a hurricane change course and do a donut before. Looks like it is heading straight for Kat and Torn again.

I feel for you guys. I was in Miami during Andrew. Planes tipped on their noses. Tug boats in swimming pools. I could go on and on... It still freaks me out. So I moved to the East Coast (Sarasota). Charley hit 20 minutes away from me.
Maybe it is the boob thing. Isn't FL the boob capital of the world? Wait, maybe that's L.A. I'm confused. Hell, I'm thinking Alaska at this point... Cleo, I saw your pics. Ouch. I wish you lots of luck. Just found out that my best friend's parents' house was ripped in half by a tornado from Ivan. They're in the mountains in NC. |sad| My whole damn house is still boarded up. It's like being in a damn cave. Staying that way until hurricane season is over..... |pissed
Not a very warm welcome for Kat & Torn. Hopefully this one will change it's course & Floridians can go back to enjoying the weather while we're all shovelling our driveways.
Serenity - I was in Sarasota in March & thought the same thing. What a perfect spot to buy a little winter home! Must be so isolated from any of the bad weather. :( |

See what Charley did, it relocated Sarasota to the East Coast. The devastation... I am in awe. haha. Just Kidding. :) |
CD, Mmmm....What can I say in reply to that one, except... |boobies|
Kcat, it is really pretty here. I thought it would make the perfect refuge from crazy Miami and hurricanes. One hasn't hit this area since the '30's. Lucky so far...Where in Canada are you from? My business partner was born in Montreal and then lived in Rosland, B.C. It is so beautiful there, snow and all. |
I'm in Edmonton, Alberta & miserable. I'm a water person & the lakes here, while beautiful, need a full on wetsuit to do anything fun. I'd like to do the snowbird thing & go somewhere for the winters if I can find a decent place to rent.

sorry, I think you missed my attempt at humor. You said the East Coast/Sarasota (which is on the West Coast)
Personally, I prefer city-life and chose West Palm in 1999 -- Jim probably can remember that fateful June. I did the research, looked around, there were three cities that I had considered and West Palm was the furthest South I would go. However, having seen parts of Western Florida, and having dealt with quite a few very frustrating years, I can certainly see the attraction. I looked at investment property in Sanabel and some of the other islands, and considered a place in Punta Gorda. Watching Jeanne bear down on West Palm makes me think that all of the landscaping debris that is still on our streets will become missles and cause more damage than we saw from Frances. Sorry for my poor attempt at humor -- I guess I should have put a few smileys there. |
I get jokes :D
|
I'm definitely big on city life. Not a club-goer as much as I like being able to walk for a slice of pizza at 1 am or catch a midnight movie.
But mainly I just want to be somewhere warm & affordable. |
Tonight while waiting in line to buy gas in prep for Jeanne, I saw a bumpersticker:
Tropical Depression: Trying to earn a working-wage in Florida :) I find it to be less expensive than when I lived in Maryland both in terms of buying normal items and Taxes -- except Gas which has a special Palm Beach County tax. Even with Frances and impending Jeanne, I wouldn't trade the decision I made in '99. |
CD, I was trying to be funny too. I guess sometimes it's hard to turn what you are thinking into words. I just realized what I said. I lived in Miami for years so I still just assume I am on the East Coast instead of the West. Silly me. |jester|

Kcat,
I understand exactly what you mean. Sarasota shuts down at 10pm. Even Starbucks is a ghost town by 10:05. I think that is the one thing I miss about Miami is being able to go somewhere after a late movie. have you been to South Beach? It's really fun and open all nite. Plus the whole place is mostly made up of cool rentals. Old Art Deco buildings or new modern ones. I go back at least twice a year to just take in some "big city" culture. I'm actually considering a summer home in Canada. Not sure where yet, I have to come check out the options. |
Fort Lauderdale is a 3 am town with the outskirts being 5 am but there are also 24 hour spots here and there if you know where to look.
|
I used to live in Lauderdale. It's a beautiful city. I lived in Port Royale off US 1. I loved it there. There are so many pretty spots in Florida. Now if only the hurricanes would leave us alone, we could getback to enjoying it.
|
Ya'll are making me jealous!
Serenity - maybe we should go halfers. I'll get the mortgage on a big lakefront cottage up in Canada & you take care of the beach house in FL. |jester
That sounds good to me! I know the perfect place...right on the beach, nightlife just a walk away. :)
