Video
Hi Everyone....
Here I go again, asking the same question, or at least something similar to other questions that keep cropping up in my "vast" (yeah right) knowledge of web management. I have video clips on my website, some are mpeg format and the newer ones are wmv format. I get complaints from members about both. Seems the mpegs are too big of files for some people, so I switched to wmv. Now it seems that Mac users cannot view wmv files at all. I have thought of putting one of my 45 minutes videos on the site but I cannot figure out what format to put it in so that most members can view it. It would not be a live feed, but a downloadable video. No matter what I do, I sure can't seem to please everyone. Either the video file is to big, or the video itself is too short! HELP!!! What do other video sites use? Since I am so wrapped up in all the technical stuff of my site as well as being the main subject......my brain doesn't want to work anymore. :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Linda |
Wmv files do not work with Macs and Strongbox.
Over at Angel's site we went all mpegs and other then dialup uses they have worked out very well. We could offer chopped up version of the mpegs but there are so few dialup users that she just told them that they would have to settle for looking at pics or do overnight downloads. A 45 minute video is going to be really huge no matter what format you put it up. |
Thanks for the reply. Do you have any suggestion as to what size file or video would be appropriate for a site? I could always cut it down.
And I had no idea that the wmvs didn't work with Strongbox....because I have Strongbox! YIKES! Linda |
I would split your long videos into chapters.
Some of Angel's videos are close to 200 megs and they are no where near 45 minutes long. In fact off the top of my head I think they are just a bit over 15 minutes but I would have to check a few to be sure. I can't imagine a 45 minute long porn vid. Maybe may need to do more editing. |
I had an idea about putting the wmv files
in the upper area of the server that isnt web assesable |
Well I'll give this a whirl and I know they'll be other that don't agrree but there are two things you need to look at.
1 video capture size, you can do avi at 352x240 depending on what you use it will be small then 720x480. ie.352x240 would be say 2+gig for 30 minutes720x480 will be hugh 8gig probly for 30 minutes. 2.Compression use a controlled biirate 720 will compress that 30 minutes to 250 or so megs the lower the bitrate the smaller the file..I don't ever use variable bitrate. It doesn't take expensive software to do this at all really unless you want to take the time to learn to use it. vitrual dub and temgene work just fine Allow them to use download programs if you don't already and give them links to mediaplayer and tell them to get the stand alone and not the embedded one that commes with IE. If they want you videos they will download the whole thing or break it into 2 or 3 minute clips so they can join them together. Don't think that everyones on high speed because they more then likely aren't |
Hmmmmmmm......all good ideas....I'm gonna check out some options! thanks!

I'll get Spaz over here from Extreme Paychecks, he can certainly help out with this topic. Lord knows through the years we have tried them all but he really got us to a consistant level within our member area and we no longer have Video issues.
