how to move a domain safely?
i've finally bought a dedicated server and i'd like to move my domain (where i have all my free sites) to this server.
i'd like to know what should i do to avoid downtime and bans. i've moved all files already and domain is in dns of this server for 3 or 4 days now. is it enough ? do you have any other suggestions? thanks |
First setup everything on the new server. Get yourself another domain name for this so that you can test everything before you switch.
Once you are sure that everything is working correctly change the DNS on your domain name to point to the new server. Wait about 4 or 5 days before you shut off your old sever once you see that the DNS is going to your new server just to be sure that it has propagated for everyone. This will result in zero downtime. |
When I changed hosts I waited 6 to 7 to be sure.. I also watched my daily old server stats till they went zero.. I think it was a 7 days..

As i said in another thread: DNS servers updates each 5-10 minutes now, it's not necessary wait 4-5 days. IMHO

i'd luke to be totally safe. i'd better wait than loose all my previous work :D |
I think that is only for root name servers and that the smaller ones at all the ISPs can take days.

Not anymore Cleo... it changed about a month ago..
I was just deleivered a new server and am setting it up right now... The domains I am adding are propogating instantly,... including whois info.. Seriously we can move hosts very easy now!!! :D Wooo Hoooo Try it? switch from one to another and back again in 5-10mins max.... 2 mins it seems like to me * Also means cheaters can avoid detection easier on some systems people might use. And whois info can be changed from one minute to the next too.. so cant rely on that as much either. |
