Max pic size?
I'm thinking of adding a max pic size to my rules. I see too many pics that are 600 tall/wide and 200kB in size.
Which modem surfer will wait around for 45 seconds to see a pic of that size? You can pretty easily make 600 tall/wide pics that are ~40kB in size and enough quality for the surfers. Alright, two questions. Submitters: Why don't you compress the pics? Link list owners: Where do you set the limit for how big pics can be? Thanks :) |
I know when I build, I rarely go over 640x480, but I've never put in a hard rule for submitters.
I'd think that 800x600 would be big enough if I was going to put a rule into place. As far as why some don't compress the pics (size & dimensions) I'd guess inexperience and/or laziness. |

Since I do TGPs too my pics are always over 40K to keep within the listing rules of some of the TGPs. Hopefully I keep them under 50K but at times they hit 60K but I'm on dedicated hosting, not virtual so that helps a bit. And I make the sizes between 640-800 on the long side.
Anything bigger than 800 is too big. If I get a free site submitted with pics 900, maybe ok. If the pics are over 1000 then I decline it. The pics do not load in the screen. And anything near 100K is automatically deleted. |
I made one site which I was promoting a softcore photography site. All the pics within the members section (of the site I was promoting) were atleast 150k. So I didnt want to shrink the pictures to 40k and then have someone sign up, then do a chargeback because they're on a dial up modem and cant see any of the pictures.
I know it's a must to build around the people on small screen resolutions, and the dial up people, etc. But it's really becoming a nuissance on my part! lol. |
I think everyone and their grandma knows that there's hi-res pics of top notch quality in the members area (plastered all over the tour) and they will only get a crappy preview (from us) for free.
So instead of giving away 10-20 second clips for free, we should give away 1 hour movies. Just so they know what they will get when they pay? :) |
lol. point taken.

Swedguy - I have a different perspective.
Swedguy said >>>"I think everyone and their grandma knows that there's hi-res pics of top notch quality in the members area (plastered all over the tour) and they will only get a crappy preview (from us) for free." <<<< Take sites like Bangbros where the quality of the pics in the members area is all over the place from crappy 30-40K pics at 600px to 250K pics at 800px not to mention the ridiculously big size of their "watermark". I would have thought their production quality would be better given how successful a sponsor they are. Or Nastydollars sites where all of their pics are pretty good quality in terms of clarity but they are all 640px and under. That was fine a few years ago, but they aren't keeping up with the times. They should offer at least two sizes of pics IMO. On the other end of the spectrum is Twistys where they have only the large size pics in their members area and they don't do much compression. Lots of their sets are above 1200px and 200-300K and they do not offer lower res versions. Anyway, in my own longwinded way, not all surfers are confident that they will get good quality members area pics. I know I'm not confident that sites will have good quality pics inside. That's one of the best reasons to check out the members area. What the hell am I saying... I dont know... I'm babbling...|zzzzzzzzz |
fringe, how does that apply to the pic size on free sites? :)
|
Swedguy - I think my point was going to be something about the pics on my free sites reflecting what's in the members area of the paysites I'm promoting. And that I don't want to rely on the surfer assuming that the paysite is going to have better pics. I would rather show them what they are getting as closely as possible.
Please excuse me while I pass out on my keyboard now from a lack of sunlight and totally screwed up circadian rhythms |zzzzzzzzz |
My full size pic target is 640-700 on the long side at 30-50kb. Some content lends it self to easier compression, but some doesn't, for whatever odd reason. Even with pain in the ass content, I rarerly have a pic over 60kb.

I have a maximum limit of 100,000 kbs file size for my LL.
I have a minimum limit of 500px (long side). I did this 'cos I got sick of waiting for pics to download when reviewing sites - and I'm on broadband cable connection - most surfers still aren't of course, so I figure they will dislike waiting for anything over 80-90kbs (unless they're paying for it). |
