The Perfect Script
If your could design your own custom linklist script, what features would you want.
Recip checker. alpha rotator for cat listing. ad handler. automatic beer fetcher for long review sessions. what else? We have a programmer working for us that is looking at writing a link list script specifically for the adult industry. We want to incorporate all the features everyone wants in one place. Think of your dream script and let me know what it would have. Thanks SS |
A partner account system to set up special status for preferred submitters.
A weighting system so that ones own sites and sites from preferred submiters can be listed above sites from regular submitters. A basic link checker that automatically scans lists looking for redirection, 404, etc. Perhaps that flags any changes made in the listed sites, and gives you a group of options for reaction, ranging from blacklisting (most severe) to flagging for further examination (least severe). Lots of page display formating options, so that you can tell the script to generate 5 pages of 50 links each or 10 pages of 25 links each. The script should automatically generate extensive interlinking so that all pages are linked to each other for the SEs. A search function like the gossamer scripts linklists. An archive function so that old sites are placed in an archive area while newer sites are placed in a more immediately accessible to surfers area. This keeps old sites active while pushing the newer sites to the front of the line. Then, when it's all done, sell me the script, for, say, $300. ;-} |
That's awesome Bill. Exactly what I'm looking for.
Anyone else? I know the one I'm using now would be perfect if it had a "Cook Dinner" and a "Mix Martini" function.|drunk| SS PS. Bill, if I can get this thing off the ground, ya want to help beta test? |
Pretty much what Bill said. :)
The search function for my surfers is real important to me since that is one of my most popular pages. The script should also do some basic site checking on submit for banned words and stuff like that. Seems like it should be able to follow links that are on the same domain so that it could check all the pages. |
A site rotator by type where random free/pay sites can be rotated into new listings from a stock listing file.
email confirming system (thinking for the future here) the ability to reduce the price for addtional licenses....the original price sounds good and the other features noted so far get my vote as well - especially the martini mixer :) |
In addition to the email confirmer, a ransom note, and you pretty much have what you need to block autosubmission if desired.
Autoposting for preferred and/or partner submitters, so that the script could almost be left to run itself once you had a large enough pool of partner submitters. Modularize the script and design it so that addons and improvements can be made. One of the limitations of some current scripts is that they are hard to modify and update. This could be a crucial selling feature in the future. Almost needless to say, design to construct pages for SE performance, which would basically mean generating pages with less than 100 outgoing per page and automated extensive internal interlinking. Keeping pages tucked into the root, daily updating/modification of the pages for "freshness", and a built in link trading system for category pages, similar to what is currently used in TGPs to trade traffic, but hard coded to trade PR/relevancy with other LL and pages. Damn straight I'd like to beta test it. ;-} I've been talking about the need for such a script for about a year. |
Great feedback guys. I've started an outline for the project, so if you think of anything else that would be cool, just pop in here and post it and I'll add it to the list.
I'm thinking cram in everything and then give the user the option to install various features and options as they wish. |

Another thought, is some kind of temporary category for suspect sites. See this thread http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/...0&pagenumber=2 :) |
Good idea Urb. Maybe an "on hold" button to temporarily remove the sites from the listings until they can be checked out. And send an email to the submitter so they can check it from their end and respond if necessary.
I also think a field in each record for the submitters IP and the IP of the domain the site resides on may be usefull. |

A gif with a submission code (to prevent auto-subs) on it would also be good, like Altavista. Also......... (sorry about this) the database needs to be robust. Some servers won't handle a bloated Links2 dbase when it "builds all" especially if you have about 4000 links in your categories. LinkAdmin does not suffer from this problem. |
The one thing that all webmaster orientated scripts need and none have is a small subroutine that make coffee and pours it out for you so you don't have to keep leaving the computer to make a fresh pot !

I assume you are doing this script for Unix spacemanspiff. :)
One thing I think your programmer may not be able to replicate is the MML factor. Every link list and tgp should have one. But sadly MMLs are in short supply. |
Yeah, Urb, it will be written for Unix. Is there another OS I should know about :)
I think our programmer dude is good at large databases, so he should be able to make it do it's thing efficiently, even for large link lists. The gif submission code is a good idea too. I'll add it all to the outline. Ecchi, if you're reaching for that coffee cup, you wasting valuable time. Intravenous is the way to go baby. |
I don’t see a need for anything but *nix, sorry Windows is not a web server, at least not one that I would use.
For the database I would like to see it use MySQL instead of a flat file. |
Lots of DB tools...ability to manipulate the data by domain etc. including the ability to delete by domain :)
make the calls to standard server proggies like sendmail etc. simple and with loads of error trapping to prevent timeouts on submissions a thermal lined IV bag would be nice :) |
Heh I'd love to beta test this!!!
Of course that means it also needs tools so you can transfer your existing link database, waiting to be reviewed database, and category stuff into it from your existing site.... |
Oh and the admin section....
Need to be able to select how many you want to review and in what order or range.. (I.E. today i only want to review submissions to the redheads category, or today i want to only review submissions within the last 2 days... etc...) |

Links 2.0 lets you do that. From the Admin section you click modify link then you can search for what you want then change it to the new category.
