To my Aussie Friends

Good luck in the rugby :-))) - Look forward to seeing you on the 22nd Nov.

To my american friends - rugby is like American Football, but harder, faster, and no bloody padding!

Greenguy 2003-10-10 09:15 AM

Around here, Rugby is an excuse for college kids to get drunk & hurt other college kids in the mud - afterwards, they go to the bar, drink some more & sing songs about this & that & then usually drink out of each others shoes :)

PS - The NFL Super Bowl is the most watched TV event in the world - we must be doing something right :D

Actually, speaking as a Brit who now lives in the States I'd have to say that you're working under a misconception - the only similarity between Rugby and US Football is the shape of the ball.
US Football is a lot more tactical and harder - as for the padding, if US Footballers didn't wear padding, there would be fatalities. Some of the hits they get are frightning. It's not like rugby where you pass the ball to avoid getting smacked!

Cleo 2003-10-10 09:20 AM

Rugby sounds like something that lesbians would do as in hardcore carpet munching. :D

Greenguy 2003-10-10 09:38 AM

Lesbian Rugby - the newest niche!

Of course - once you have the ball, you had better be able to run like fuck!!!! :D

Cruch!!!!

Pow!!!!

:)

Thumbler 2003-10-10 10:02 AM

I didn't think lesbians played with balls :)

DangerDave 2003-10-10 10:13 AM

Hahahaha NFL is for pussies! "Wheres my helmet?, my head hurts!"

Rugby World Cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet this year... more than 3 billion people will watch it.. in more than 150 countries

First game down - Australia 24 - Argentina 8

47 games to go |rasta|

DD

Greenguy 2003-10-10 10:30 AM

DangerDave - haven't you learned anything? If it ain't popular in the USA, it ain't popular!

Hell, the only reason I know about Beckham is because he married that Spice Girl :D

Jeremy 2003-10-10 10:36 AM

Greenie - you owe me a new keyboard :) BTW before they drink anything from shoes, they piss in them.

Thumbler - dunno when you moved out there mate, but rugby union these days is bloody frightening & when you've got 18-stone flankers lining up with the three-quarters and keeping up with them, you better believe it's in your interest to pass the ball :)

"Tactics" are also a lot easier to see whyen you've got 10 minutes between plays to plan and for the TV guys to analyse :)

Cleo - think shoes :-P

BTW - rugby is nothing compared to the true madmen of sport, the guys who play Aussie Rules - utter mayhem on an oval pitch, but DD can explain that one, coz I can't :)

Funny you should mention him - I was watching one of the games at the weekend (can't remember which one) and as a field goal sailed over , the commentator said 'curved it in just like Beckham'. I was pretty surprised I must admit.

The only thing I don't like with US sports is that teams are declared 'world champions' in events where the only teams that compete are from the US LOL

MrMaryLou 2003-10-10 10:39 AM

Football you bet :) Rugby geez yet another sport we will never get it ranks up there with soccer and we gave that to the moms here in the usa hence the term Soccer Mom lol

Jeremy 2003-10-10 10:40 AM

I believe this page may say something about the world's most watched TV programs, but I didn't get much further than the top pic.

I've been here two and a half years - lived in the UK for 46 years before that. I'm still learning the language and the spelling :)

18 stones is nothing - some of the US Football players are well over 300 pounds

Agree with you on that one - sheer lunacy.
Incidentally. for the benefit of my American friends, a 'pitch' is a field - nothing to do with Baseball (or rounders) :)

DangerDave 2003-10-10 04:47 PM

GG, I know it aint popular in the US.... but I can remember when "Soccer" never rated a mention there either.. let alone womens soccer.... now every second model is a "soccer mom" :)

The US is represented....

http://www.usarugby.org/
http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/RugbyWo...ent/Teams/USA/
..... and the "Eagles" normally give a few teams a bit of a run for their money... but then GET SMASHED! |goodnight

Beckham, schmeckham... he'd have been better off letting his football do the talking rather than using that spice thing for popularity...

Jeremy too true.. I think someone described "american" football as the perfect clinical football game.. so refined there is hardly any football left in it.. I still love it, cause I usually get to the the game with all the crap "highlighted" out .

Give me 70kg(150lbs) halfback thinking on his feet as a 120kg(260lbs) prop closes on him fast anyday.....

AFL(aussie rules) is a fantastic game.. and yes I dont expect anyone to understand it.. In the fitness stakes AFL players would shit all over most other codes.. except Gaelic of course..

Soccer mums make me $$ MML... that I like :D

Oddly enough, one of the 74 Fox channels that I have has Rugby on this morning - I just watched bits & pieces of Australia beating South Africa & now I'm watching New Zealand beat Australia 21-17 (that had to be a tough loss for you Aussies)

I've noticed 2 things from watching this:
1 - you guys have some annoying ads on the fields - sorta like a flash/java pop-up that's not in a window - LOL
2 - may of the players are wearing very strange looking head gear - sorta like a kid on the short bus :D

urb 2003-10-11 03:52 PM

England just qualified for Euro 2004 (soccer) with a 0-0 draw against Turkey. |roses|

Turkey have to go to playoffs but England qualified by forcing a draw. :D

DangerDave 2003-10-11 04:50 PM

That's weird GG..

Australia beating South Africa
and
New Zealand beat Australia

must have both been replays from Super 12/Bledisloe Cup..:(

The big guns of Rugby dont play in the WorldCup until the Quarter Finals....

... and yes any loss to NZ hurts... but that loss wasn't as bad as the 50-21 drubbing they gave us earlier this year..

World Cup is pay back time... :D

DD

The Other Steve 2003-10-11 06:06 PM

In another place I suggested to a Pom that the England wouldn't make the World Cup Final - he got quite upset about that - can't imagine why |couch|

South Africa looks like they have lost ground big time since they won the World cup in 94. I see they beat Uruguay 72/6 or something but then again anyone could beat Uruguay |jester|

Rugby was invented in England, in a place about 30 miles down the road from me called (surprisingly) Rugby.

But just because we invented a sport, doesn't mean much. Who keeps kicking our arses at cricket?

But last time I looked Wales were in the process of slaughtering Canada.
