The only thing joining the comunist party does is put a red flag next to your name if you are ever investigated. Other than that, it serves no purpose.

It'll make the hippy chicks dig you. They'll think you are an anti-elitist and a thinker.

When I was at Polytechnic (University) I joined several fan clubs for a TV series called "Blake's 7". One of them was called "The Liberator Popular Front" (it was a pun on the ship in the series). My father made me take the membership card out of my wallet because he was afraid that if I was ever arrested the police would assume I was a member of some commie revolutionary group.
