I have a small problem

Anytime I try to go to a site that starts with "https", I get a no DNS error. I have tried it with Netscape, IE and even Mozilla.

Anyone have any idea what's up?

Surfn 2003-10-17 09:02 AM

Click on "tools"
then "Internet Options"
then click "advanced tab"
then click "restore defaults"
go from there.

Let me know if that doesn't solve it.

Jim 2003-10-17 09:04 AM

Nope...didn't fix it :)

Jim 2003-10-17 09:08 AM

I think it must be an isp thing...I am about to call them. I mean, none of my browsers are working on these sites. And as you can imagine...they are all banks :)

Surfn 2003-10-17 09:21 AM

Did you change your firewall settings recently?

MrMaryLou 2003-10-17 09:23 AM

Are you taking cookies that might be it ?

Cleo 2003-10-17 09:28 AM

Maybe try different DNS numbers in your network settings.

I know that Bellsouth, my ISP, seems to love changing their numbers without warning.

If you know the IP of a domain you can try putting that in instead of the domain name. If it works then it is a DNS issue.

What happens if you try to go to https://204.251.10.43/

You should get invalid certificate, but the page should load.

urb 2003-10-17 09:33 AM

You mean you bank online??

Jim 2003-10-17 09:53 AM

I tried everything and guess what? Mozilla is the only browser that is now working on those sites.

Mozilla sucks

Cleo 2003-10-17 09:53 AM

I bank online, why not, it's fast and easy.

urb 2003-10-17 10:53 AM

Apple Macs are ok coz they are mega-secure. But online banking with a PC is a little risky IMO.

Everyone is gonna tell me why I'm worng now. :)

You don't trust 128 bit encryption?

It's not the server side I am worried about.

Your pc develops problems with SSL and the only way you can view secure servers is via a non-MS product. :(

Anyone know when the last MS critical update was? I'm pretty sure mine updated yesterday. Dunno what was in it.

Have you tried a System Restore Jim?

Same here, I updated yesterday. Today I ordered some content via “https” with no hiccups at all.

MrMaryLou 2003-10-17 12:51 PM

A bit off topic here but anyone know how to get rid of the hidden cache the MS does the old ie 5.0 stuff ?

Drill down in the "windows" directory to the "temp” folder.
Click the “history” folder.
Click the “historyIE5” folder.
Delete the “index.dat" file. Same if you are on NT drill down to the same place.

Jim 2003-10-17 01:40 PM

Well, now mozilla is doing the same thing.
Updated my critical updates yesterday.

Jim

Are you sure you didn't install something new or change your firewall settings?

Jim 2003-10-17 02:32 PM

It's Norton...and, it says I do not have admin privileges so it will not let me fix or uninstall it.

I've had that before the two methods I use are:
1.) I reboot
2.) If the problem persists I do a system restore to before the problem. HTH

All fixed...what a pain in the ass. Purchased a new norton internet security suite. It would not install because I didn't have supervisor permissions to uninstall the old one. I started deleting files and I guess I found the right one :)

DangerDave 2003-10-17 04:55 PM

I hate Norton products.. |pcsucks|
